Title: Oil Sump Baffle for a TII
Post by: antnicuk on March 28, 2007, 04:01:44 PM
I need a sump baffle for the new engine i\'m building, I have seen this one on Mazdatrix but was wondering if i could get in this country.

Make one :) they are dead simple, just a flat plate with holes in it. I made an entire sump using nothing more fancy than a pillar drill a jigsaw and a file :) (oh and a welder)

measure it up draw it out and get one laser cut. I might even be persuaded to draw it for you :)

oh go on then i will let you!

wondering whether to make a slightly thicker one out of stainless steel so it would add some strength at the same time. 4mm stainless is quite thick. I am slao strenghening the dowel points on the block.

working with stainless is hard work i had to make a couple of extra holes 5mm dia. in some brackets 3mm thickness and even with drilling small pilot holes it knacked my bits:2Confused :2eek

there is a knack to drilling stainless I found, lots of pressure and go through the 1st time in one go, if you let it spin on the surface it will harden and dull the bit. There are probably drills with proper cutting angles for drilling the stuff too (this is just what I have found YMMV)

No point in making a sump baffle from the stuff anyway :) mild will be fine as it\'s never going to rust

easiest stuff would be ali but i am tempted to make a little thicker and add some strength to the engine. i can drill ss with out too much problem, i would prefer it as its a lot more rigid than mild

SS is the same rigidity as mild

Steel is all pretty much the same, the elastic modulus is around 200Gpa (that\'s just the ratio of stress against deflection basically) even really fancy steel alloys have roughly the same value.

Ally is quite a bit lower as are Ti alloys and other similar alloys. Strength is an alltogether different consideration but a sump plate is never going to fail so rigidity is king :)
