Title: coolant buzzer
Post by: gee1 on March 28, 2007, 02:23:25 PM
Hi! and thanks for taking the time to read this.

I drove the car earlier today for 5 mins then turned it off to have it washed. When I restarted it, after about 20 seconds the coolant buzzer went off. I immediately turned it off and popped the bonnet and checked the level in the filler neck in the centre of the engine and it was at the top(nearly overflowing). So i took a look in the ast and when I opened it the water in the filler neck dropped but was still visable.
so I drove it the 5 mins home again with the buzzer on for thirty sec then off for 10sec - it repeated this all the way home. My water temp did not rise dramatically and did not exceed around 40 degrees.
Im baffled :3Confused

anyone have a clue what the problem could be or had the same problem???

Thanks
Gareth

sounds like you have an air lock in the system, possibly due to a water leak, or due to a faulty ast cap. The pressure cap is a fairly common cause of water loss.
The cap is designed to hold pressure (0.9 bar) above this pressure the cap should vent to the expansion bottle (located in the rh front wing) when the system cools down the water should then be drawn under vacuum back into the AST through the silver disc at the bottom of the pressure cap.

Check for external leaks, check for debris and condition of pressure cap seal, check for debris under the small disc on the vacuum return on the cap (gently lift the disc and remove any grit or rust under it) check the hose from the top of the AST is connected correctly to the expansion bottle (blow through it, you should here bubbles in your exp bottle) check you have water/coolant in your expansion bottle.

If all is ok, you need to top up your engine and keep a very close eye on it!
There are a few threads regarding purging air locks from the engine, may be worth a look.

Thanks for the replies, after a chat with Clive it turns out it is likely to be the sensor. I\'m going to change that and see if it helps.
