Title: Carbon Fibre Hard Pipes
Post by: AtomicRex on March 28, 2007, 08:08:17 AM
Don\'t know if anyone else has ever had their pipes blow off, but mid qualifying it is a pain in the arse!

So to get round the problem we had some made from Carbon Fibre :)

The process for making them is rather easy...get a load of foam discs....put them together in the shape you want, then form the C/F round that....

I think they look rather kewl as well :InLove

Super light weight, and due to how tight they are to get in....I doubt they can pop off no matter what boost Carl lets me have! (I keep asking for 2 bar....and keep getting the same answer! :Hammer)

Plus the other good thing is on the one going to the elbow...we can flatten the profile to give the clearance we need

You need to bruch a thin layer of clear coat ove the top, this will realy bring ou tthe carbon fiber weave!! as at the moment they just look satin black!!

They are rather bespoke, as you need to have them individually made for each pipe run....my intercooler isn\'t in the same point as anyone else\'s as Ive moved it forward.

Could be done....but not sure for how much.

Might be a daft question but why not use Aluminum Hard Pipe and Wiggins Couplings?

Not a daft question...but weight, strength, and if you look at the pipes....I think even the most talented of fabricators would struggle to recreate them in Ali

I do, but Ive only loaded up one and thats of it screwing up at Pembrey due to a slight oil leak.....which we couldnt see....Shame as it was a simple mistake of mine, just didnt spot it in time!

If you do a search on Sweet Rx7 on you tube...you will see it out on track :)

The only thing that would worry me is that you haven\'t given it any room to flex when you rev the engine hard. Won\'t you run the risk of shattering the pipes ? Thought you needed some space between pipes to allow for flex of coupling ?

Looking very nice though, are they cured in the oven carbon or have they been laminated from sheet and naturally cured ?

We have designed a gap, for this very reason, between the elbow, the turbo, and the intercooler.  The Samco hoses give the required amount of slack needed.
