Title: Stock twins at 3000rpm... noise
Post by: robedwards99 on March 27, 2007, 03:44:51 PM
Can anyone tell me what happens at 3k rpm on stock twins as I am hearing a short metallic screech as I accellerate.

I don\'t hear it at any other time at all.

Cheers,
Rob.

The turbo (primary) is spooled and running, the second isnt doing anything at this point.

Weird. I was kind of guessing it was the secondary starting to spool or something.

Any suggestions as to what it might be??

2nd doesnt start until about 3800/4000 and starts swapping over at around 4500-4800.

My car is still making this noise.

To describe it a bit further... if I am in a low gear and the revs are building faster the noise is very short, if in a higher gear say 4th with the revs building slower the screech is longer but it always comes in at exactly the same revs at about 3k.

Does anyone have any idea at all what it might be as it\'s a little disconcerting and doesn\'t sound good!

Yes, there is a good possibility it may be your air pump.

Disconnect it. The plug is easy to get to, it’s on the top of the air pump.

mine does/did this, it was the air pump.

the other day it broke down, at first i thought it was seized turbo (thanks rac guy) but on talking to pip at wgt he says it doesn`t sound like the turbo.

so i`m thinking that the air pump has seized solid, stopping the belts from moving thus stalling the engine, i`ll find out on fri when pip looks at it.

if yours is the airpump, open the bonnet get someone to rev it and watch/ listen to the airpump, it was obvious the noise was coming from it on mine!

or then again i might just be talking poo!

well it seems mine might of been low oil as a good top up seems to of cured it.

I will update if the noise returns.
