Hi all,
A quick question if you dont mind.
I cleaned my spark plugs on Saturday with a wire brush, plugs looked a little black but were in good condition. Put all plugs back in, 9\'s in all chambers. Started the car and it sounded as if it was firing on 1 rotor, very very lumpy. I checked the leads and i dont thing the top right blue lead was fully plugged in.
Took the plugs out again, except the bottom left one and there was fuel on them. So dried them and put them back in. I didnt do the other because the opposite plug on the other rotor was dry - so i thought that it would be dry to. Went to start the car, and it was as if there was no spark. Tried the EGI fuse thing removal and it didnt work. Have i flooded the car by not having the ignition lead connected and will leaving it for 5 days allow the plugs to dry naturally?
Sorry, got carried away ;)
Any ideas?
I wouldn\'t want to leave fuel sat in my housings if it had flooded. If it has flooded you need to take the plugs out, crank the engine to get the petrol out and then put a teaspoon of oil into the housings to help the seal to form between the apex seals and the housing (as the petrol will have washed it away).
It will probably be pretty rough to start with once you start her.
If i take the plugs out would i need to remove the EGi fuse as well to stop it sparking when i try and crank it?
Do i need to put oil, direct into where the spark plugs go into the housings??
Cheers
Not sure to be honest but I\'m guessing it would be a good idea. Here is how to remove it:

I have been searching the forum for EGi fuse etc, and although i did this method a long long time ago i cant remember if i took the correct egi fuse out.
Do i remove the one next to the Battery (small 30A pink in colour) or the larger one yellow in colour slightly higher up in the engine bay?
Yellow one, EGI main fuse relay.
Start it up, if initially lumpy. I\'ve found a short drive or rev it gently through the rev range a few times will soon clear out the excess.
Thanks Freddy! So i was taking out the wrong one!! No wonder the deflood method didnt work!
May see if i can try at lunchtime then, fingers crossed!
Good luck, and don\'t forget to put a dribble of oil in otherwise it\'ll struggle to make compression.
mines flooded :(
Well, i popped home and it fired but then very quickly died - possibly way too much fuel in there now.
Problem is, how do you get the Yellow Main Fuse out. It seems to be well and truly stuck in there. is there a special tool, or is it suppose to just pull out??
P.s I will remove the plugs and clean them tomorrow evening, just didnt have enough time 30mins travel and 15mins to try and start the car (45min lunch break!!!)
The EFI fuse is pink, this is the centre fuse on the battery terminal set of fuses, it is purely a pull out fuse, it has a clear top with 30A embossed on it!
You MUST remove this before you crank the engine with the plugs out otherwise you are quite likely to ignite the mix as it blasts out of the blug holes:2Confused
Use a plier to pull out the Yellow EGI Main Fuse. The plier in the tool box in the boot of an fd is ideal. Or use something similar.
I also put mine in an oven very hot, need good gloves and it worked a treat with them preheated.
The EGI fuse is on the battery fuse box. it\'s the one in the middle of the five and usually pink. Pull it out and crank the engine with the throttle wide open until you can\'t see any more fuel vapour "chuffing" out the spark plug holes. Clean and dry the plugs and refit them ensuring the leads "click" on to the electrodes. Repalce the EGI fuse and start the engine with loads of throttle. Run the engine for at least 5 minutes, or imediately tale it for a drive. Allow the engine to warm up properly, don\'t just leave it idling.
If it drops on to one rotor when idling, your plugs/leads are buggered or you have a sticky injector... as long as it always starts, your engine compression is probably fine.

I like to use a Gas Hob to warm my plugs if i get a flood, You can get them realy warm and there still hot by the time your Screwing the Plug back in (you can hear the Fuel in the plug hole sizzling)
If i was you i\'d be putting a Fresh set of plugs in anyway, Rotarys can be a Bugger to start if they flood. My advice would be EGI fuse/Plugs out Spin the Motor over for a Minute or so until the White vapour stops coming out the Plug holes, fresh plugs then Try it, if that Fails repeat but (oviously dry the New plugs on a gas Hob or Blow torch) then Tow it round the Block.
Its Important your Battery is Good too so if it starts to struggle don\'t flog it just Charge it back up. BTW I have no idea what colour it is but the EGI fuse lives in the Long thin Fuse box next to the Battery and is quite large (can\'t miss it)
Hi guys,
Well its not good, i took the plugs out dried them off, Egi fue out and cranked it over (only for 15secs). Put the plugs back in, and tuned the key and hey presto - NOTHING, just engine turning over. So i did the same, still nothing. Did the same again it caught but couldnt stay running?? Anyway, decided to get a pull start. It was weird cause at 20mph i released the clutchand the revs rose bu it idnt sound like it was firing???
Well, i tried one more time and it really struggled, then the battery was flat. I only bought a new halfords one 2 weeks ago. So its on charge tonight. I took the plugs out and cranked it for 15 secs until the smoke went. Plugs back in,so will wait until maybe tomorrow/Thursday to try again.
By the way, i am getting really good at changing the plugs now!!
One other question: The bottom leading black plug leads, what would happen if you got them the wrong way round?
If it doesnt start, its new plugs and leads - but the plugs look really new?

When you turn it over with the Plugs out does it Make Nice loud Pssh Noises?
Also The Main engine loom passes very close to the Front Plugs, have a Quick look if you have knocked a Plug whilst taking the Spark Plugs out.
Another Trick to check if its Electrical is to put an Old (but working) plug in a lead and turn the engine over with a Third party watching for a Spark.
All said i still lay money on its Flooded. I sugest you Take all the plugs out and crank it for a good Minute to clear it well (with the EGI out) then get your self a set of New plugs and try again.
You know you need to Tow a Flooded FD in second with the Clutch out don\'t you? I know it sounds dumb but its not like a Piston engine, you need to let the Clutch out for a good period of time and you\'ll know when its thinking about it becouse it will disapear in a Cloud of Smoke (plus it will do lots of Poping and banging)
I\'d be checking you have the leads on the correct way round too.
Hi Grizzly,
The engine does make that kind of Pssh noise yes, as if its pushing loads of air out the holes - presume this is good then?
I will try it again Thursday night now. I will also check that im getting the spark by doing the plug in lead thing.
When i towed it, i put the car in 2nd, foot down on clutch and then released the clutch is that the right way then?
I have no markings on the bottom spark plugs, they just hang but it seems one is longer than the other so i believe its natural route is to the furthest.

The insulator (only the insulator) is all black not white but, the electrode and metal outer parts look like this:

(The insulator in this pic is white but mine are black)
Are my plugs fouled??

Spark plug wise, Don\'t worrie about the Colour too much (oviously carbon won\'t Help matters) you want to look at the electrode in the center, if its Rounded off Bin it and get fresh (they should be Square at the end if there in good order)
Ok Bump starting the car, What i tend to do is while its being towed WITHOUT!! the Ignition on drop the Clutch in second and WOT it (doing about 20-30mph), do this for a Hundred yards or so, You will notice the revs will be alot higher than Cranking in on the Key which will help with Compression and clearing some of the fuel out the exhaust, Now with very little Throttle (if any at all) do the same again but this time Turn the Ign on, You want to be Covering the Clutch at all times (incase it Fires and shoots forwards) It may start poping and banging so if you want to tell if its running or not Dip the Clutch and it will run or die.
Just remember when your Towing it when it fires don\'t panic and hit the Brake becouse one of two things will happen, You\'ll miss and Hit the gass :) or you\'ll snap the tow rope :rollin I only say this becouse i\'ve seen it done.

Its sure helps, Thats Pssh noise is an Indicator that its got enough Comp to start. If there is Nice even Pssh noises (louder the better) you stand a Fighting chance.
Cheers Grizzly, my plugs look a bit rounded so im going to buy some new ones i have decided. Each time i take them out there is fuel and oil all over them, and carbon deposits covering the centre electrode. So i cant see this helping!
The tow start thing was funny, it didnt work but i was being pulled by a 1.5 Nissan Almera which struggled, plus we have some huuuge speed bumps to clear. So battery is on charge tonight as well, so fingers crossed for thursday!
Thanks
Ash
For the sake of people doing searches and having the same symptoms that i have had with the car, i changed the plugs for a set of BUR7EQP in the leading and a set of BUR9EQP in the trailing and the car started first time. Lots of blue smoke but once that had cleared it was running very well!
Thanks to all those that helped!:Thumbsup!
