Has anyone had Brembo 8pots fitted to their FD?
Just wondering what wheel specs you had, to get them to fit along with any pics.
LOL
Fish
Lol whats so funny about my question Fish? Some big beasties are what the FD needs as the 4 pots aren\'t up to track abuse on single turbos.
I\'m under the impression that the minimum size would be 18" to clear the calipers - what about width though, I\'ve got 9"s? My offset is +18 on the front which should be alright. Just checking on what anyone else has done.
Or are you thinking \'Overkill\' ;)
More pots dont make a better brake setup. The discs are also factor in to it.
Nothing wrong with fitting 8 pots, but are you also going to be replacing the rears with say 4 or 6 pots?
Are you also looking at removing the stock brake servo and putting a pedal box and individual reservoirs?
I\'d stick with a good set of 6 pots and a well sized disc.
Fish
Quite true! Although Endless does some lovely 12 pots! Mmmm!
I\'ve queried the master cylinder setup etc.. but for the time being we\'re going to test it on the stock setup as we have the time to adjust and replace components until its right.
I do want to beef up the rears as the bias will be 99% front! So a good 4 or 6pot on the back whilst retaining the handbrake will be on the cards. Got a proportioning valve too, but like most things if you change one part theres a knock-on effect! Plus the money side which means I can only do things step by step rather than all in one hit. I\'d rather buy something once than keep uprading it.
You still going to run APs on yours?
Actually re-reading that bit about buying something once makes me wonder why I didn\'t just go and buy a Porsche GT3 RS!!
I guess there isn\'t many FDs running 8 pots then lol! I\'m in two minds now, maybe I should go with a 996 Brembo instead, and slowly turn the FD into a Porsche in Japanese clothing!

What 4 pots do you have that arent up to track use to date?
i use fd calipers with spacers and hawk hp 10\'s pads, ap racing fluid and 330 x 30 mm discs and even under tough track conditions they work brilliantly all day on the track.
my car weighs a lot more than yours so you have a big advantage their aswell. There is no point having such big brakes that you have to remove the servo assistance because they lock up to easily.
If I could find somewhere that coudl make the bells and brackets for my AP\'s I would have them fitted.
KAD do a kit for hte AP 6 pots but not hte model caliper I have, and it has different mounting dimensions.
Fish
Well currently its standard discs with FD 4 pot and Endless carbon ceramic pads. They are fine when warmed up but I can\'t help thinking they will give out after more than a few laps of abuse. I\'m having the lines in the engine bay replaced along with the ABS which has been binned. A propotioning valve is going in too. Probably a large master cylinder also - depends how it feels once the brakes are on.
I was looking at getting some Porsche brembos for the front which would enable me to use a 32mm width rotor. But someones come up to me with some huge Brembo 8 pots with 34x370mm discs and my jaw dropped. Hence my question about fitment! I\'d never need another brake upgrade! Well apart from the rears lol!
KAD should make the brackets but they are alway so busy!
we have 360 mm discs on the tripple and they only just fit inside the 19" wheel.
I have the calipers and some nice 355*32mm discs, but just cant find a good company to get the job done.
Fish
I think any thing much bigger than 350mm and you will need to pay close attention to brake to rim clearance on some 18s (not all by any means, but some).
I\'ve driven Brembo and AP 4 and 6 pots with various pads and I always get the feeling that the difference over stock is night and day. How much does a 370mm disc weigh btw? I cant see you gaining much more than weight (and spangle-factor ofc) by going to discs that big. I would concentrate on trying to get some thing decent working on the back end before whacking some mahoosive fronts on it, proportioning valve or not.
Another thing to consider is really aggressive pads are likely to tear up discs a *lot* quicker than \'normal\' fast road/track pads - so if you are looking to be doing a lot of track laps you should check disc replacement costs arent particularly nasty for the part you are intending on using. AP discs/calipers vary in price a lot depending on size and more so how popular the parts are; some similiar items can vary in price a lot so its another thing worth checking.
Finally, dont feel you need to run Brembo or AP; ask Jez about the K-Sports he ran in his Nissan in Time Attack last year for instance, they are well cheap in comparison usually, so might be worth considering. I think Hi-Spec and KAD and similiar money to Brembo?

Cheers guys for the opinions and help calipers/rotors/pads.
The discs are going to be pretty damn heavy along with the calipers, compared to a lightweight ali AP setup. The brakes would probably be more suited to a lorry than a lightweight sports car but they would look and stop very well! Surely the larger disc area would help dissapate heat more? Although a good point about replacements, I fear four pads per caliper will cost me a bit! But you lot should know me by now!! ;)
I\'ll get the tape measure out as they may not even fit! Willl let you know what I decide to do!!
If they don\'t go in - fancy selling your APs Fish!? ;)
I thought that the KAD kits Dragon did had 378mm rotors, they fit under most 18" rims I\'m led to believe. I\'m more concerned about the actual calipers.
Quote from: Initial-DI\'ll get the tape measure out as they may not even fit! Willl let you know what I decide to do!!
You going to run your (cant remember what they are, i guess at) Grams? to save crying when u doink one, why not get some cheaper rims for the track(Compomotive for e.g.) - you can get them made to you spec offset-wise and if you give em your intended brake setups dimensions they will let you know if there will be problems or make them to fit. You could even sell the Grams and you\'ll have paid for your brake kit :)
Quote from: Initial-DI thought that the KAD kits Dragon did had 378mm rotors, they fit under most 18" rims I\'m led to believe. I\'m more concerned about the actual calipers.
"Most 18" rims" I know the KAD kits seem to use pretty big discs but thats big inside an 18" rim. I\'ve seen AP disc/caliper combos as small as 356 be too tight inside an 18 rim for them to be considered safe - went down to a 343 to ensure adequate clearance.
Caliper size is relative isnt it? the bigger the disc you are running the further the caliper will be toward the rim? i.e. you need to consider both caliper and disc size together, not one or the other on its own.
Ben, the Porsche 6 pot calipers are actually very very good, that would be an easy and effective upgrade caliper wise.
Fish is absolutly right in saying more pots =\'s better brakes, and neither does the old query of thinking the biggest discs make better brakes, its finding the whole balance between caliper piston pressure, and even more importantly disc and pad friction/cooling/release properties and abilities.
If any of you get chance to read Wastegate Chatter (Mitsubishi Lancer Register club magazine) next month, then please do,we had our 2 piece discs and pads tested against the ap strapdrive/ap formula big brake kit, and alcon big brake kit, and we came out on top in all areas from driver feedback/stopping distances/time taken.. and it makes for some very interesting reading.
What i will say for those brembo 8 pots, is that they are a 4 pad arrangement (2 pads per side), there fore the pressure is evenly spread across the contact area of the disc and reduces pad kock off, and the feel/initial bite will be more consistent than a 2pad arrangement (1 pad per side) that may not get the full benefit from the pressure of the 8 pots (aswell as generating too much heat and uneven pad wear).
The other benefit for a 4 pad arrangment is the fact that the area between the pads creates another leading edge which helps with pad conditioning and initial bite.
Those kad/tarox/a.n.other 10/12 pot things are very much a gimic with tiny piston sizes that do not offer an effective pressure force for the pad to disc face contact.
Another option for you Ben (believe me i am trying to find as much info as i can from our japanese arm) with your JDM contacts, get in touch with Panspeed Japan direct and see if they will make you a set-up that we provided onto their rx8 and rx7 time attack cars.
What i have found out is we supplied the discs and float attachments, as well as the pads, but they had their own discs bells machined to their own requirements (so offsets could be different to standard, but you never know).
I have actually listed the fd3 on my wishlist of 2 piece disc applications to be manufactured, and as long as there is enough demand, then it will be made.

Or lose £20k a year in depreciation on you 997 GT2...
Saying all that... I had a passenger ride in a RUF tuned 911 Gt2 (996 shape). It was bought new from RUF and had their £40k tuning package on it. 641bhp. 191mph along Brunters with acceleration that just kept coming (we ran out of track). Breaks that made my face feel like it was peeling off the front of my head and felt more composed at 191 than the FD did on the day at 150.
All that in a package that was totally driveable as a day to day car!
Blimmin brilliant cars.

Think GT2/3 prices are pretty stable atm so I\'ve been told. Guy we met last trip has a 1994 993 (I think, last of the air-cooled?). Paid 27K for it 5 years ago, has largely just paid servicing (non-Porsche main dealer) on it and expects to get anything from 18-22K for it now. Done a fair amount of Ring time, has a bolt in cage which reduces its value a bit along with the non-porsche servicing. Sounds pretty reasonable. Did a couple of laps in it with him, very composed and stable although not terribly quick (1500kg with 300hp or so?) - but felt rock solid.
You see the guys flogging their GT2 and 3s around the Ring, they look and sound awesome :D

True for the older cars but buy new and you\'ll lose most folk\'s annual salary in year 1!
The 993 is very cool and a few of the Guys I know who do the VMax events at brunters have
very modified cars. One or two knocking on the doors of 200mph.
They\'ve spent the equivalent of 2 or 3 500bhp FDs to get there though...

We have front and matching rear caliprs on our site, with handbrake. You would need to make bells and brackets. Then would recommend using Performance Friction (which are working to get up soon) floating disc for a great set up.

What im delighted/proud to say to people who maybe do not know of us very well, is that we have never had a direct drive disc "explode" on any vehicle track or street:cheers
Im not implying that all Racing Brakes expolde either (nor can i give a reason why said rotor did break....could have been one of many), just mearly stating what happened on why/how our marketing director got involved with that thread.
Dan, any idea when you guys will do an FD fitment and how do you compare piecewise with RB generally?
The FD application is in my sales forecast, so as and when we get to it is all i can say at this current moment in time.....(if i was the MD, then it would be the first to be made let me tell you!)
The products are entirely different to Racing Brakes in that ours is a race proven product that is filtered down to the road using the exact same technology,so this reflects in our price as we are a high end product.
Our Mitsubishi EVO 2 piece applications retails at £243.50 per disc.
As for F1 discs failing.....thats why two teams have been in liaison with us over the last year now to develop something new for them to use ;)

So you wouldnt know of a good company that could sort out some mounting brackets and bells for me then. ;)
I would even buy a new set of discs if it helps. :)

Wow! Alot of posts since I last looked!! Thanks for the help and suggestions.
You\'ll be glad or not very surprised to hear I\'ve gone for the Brembo 8 pots with super huge discs, I\'ll post up some pics over the weekend hopefully! Ohh I\'m so excited about me new brakes!! :)
I\'m sticking with my Gram Lights and some grippy A048 tires, it wouldn\'t look right without a nice set of 18"s on there!! They are light weight which will hopefully makeup for the additional weight of the new brakes. I have a spare set of rims for drifting but they look really odd as they sit too far inside my arches.
Next will be the rear setup! Has anyone managed to fit a pair of the front 4pots on the rear and keep the rear 2pots as the hand brake only? I was thinking along those lines, plus get the larger Project Mu 314mm rear discs and 99 spec rear 2pot brackets.
Fish I may be able to help with the bells and brackets I\'ll ask over the weekend and see what he\'d need and how much.
Ben...is your car still running the ABS?
Nope it\'s been removed, also plumbing in a proportioning valve.

Quote from: Initial-DNope it\'s been removed, also plumbing in a proportioning valve.

Good move on removing the ABS, for those size brakes to work effectively and to the best of their ability the ABS needs to be junked.
Braking input and feedback/performance will now be solely in the hands of all the components now.
Just can\'t brake hard in bends now! Or I\'ll be in the ditch! All good components, all the brakelines are to be replaced. Will try the standard cylinder but may change up to a 929 one as most people feel the stock one isn\'t adequate.
Ben, if it helps I have a complete front hub that they could use to mock up both yours and mine, so less time off the road. ;)
Fish
Have you got rid of the servo?
Quote from: Initial-DNope it\'s been removed, also plumbing in a proportioning valve.

Hi Ben,
You may have done this already but if you have dumped your servo and want your brakes to work properly you really need to think about a twin master cylinder set up with "in cab" adjustable brake bias.
The brakes you now have on the front will be little more than show brakes unless you can get some four pots on the back to start equalising the braking efficiently you now have on the front.
With a proper bias adjustable system you will be surprised at the amount of rear brake you end up running, also my advise will be to sort out mounting the four pots on the back and then run small "spot" calipers for a hand brake.
With the amount of braking you will have the ABS is going to have to go, if you were running proper race compound tyres you may have been able to keep the ABS but on road type tyres all you will find is that you will "chatter" the tyres as they search for grip as the ABS unit isn\'t going to have a clue whats going on any more.
Put it in the bin, put some braided brake like on so you can feel the pedal properly and away you go.
BTW I have some big S/H rear RX-8 brake disc\'s that will be ideal for a rear conversion such as yours.
Hope this helps

Exactly right with the amount of decel the car will be capable of once they brakes are upto temperature.
Thanks for the pointers Clive, I\'ll pass them onto the guy doing the work. I\'ll get the rears sorted shortly I hope, it depends on the budget stretching that far!
Fish thanks for the kind offer of hub but I\'m afraid he said its going to be a one off job for me as a favour.
Heres some (really poor) shots of the discs and the huge calipers compared to the stock items. I really didn\'t think they were that much bigger until I put them side by side! Its quite a tight fit in the 18\'s so I\'m keeping my fingers crossed once their mounted the rims won\'t rub.
Very interesting read. Did the brakes fit behind the wheels?
Yep they just squeeze in behind my 18\'s about 3mm clearance. Just waiting for the brackets to be finished along with the rest of the car now....
Bugger off boasting that you\'ve got someone to make the bells and bracket will you. :p
Fish
Ha haa, sorry fella! I\'d have thought KAD or somewhere could do it, you\'d just need to leave the bits with them, it\'d take a while but they\'d do it eventually.
From experience a couple of years ago, many engineering companies will no longer make brackets or components for brakes. One (a former supplier to Lotus) explained it was because the risk of being sucked into a law suit in the event of a failure/accident was too great to make it worth doing - especially as a one off. [Lotus had wanted them to sign documents making the supplier liable in the event of a claim against them.] It was a pity as up to the point we told him what they were for, everything was going really well. He was happy to make us bits for racing boats but maybe because when they break large amounts of the evidence just sinks!
Not sure I would recommend the place where we finally got it done. Can dig out the address if you get stuck as they were S. London / Kent borders somewhere so I guess convenient for you if nothing else and you could check them out for yourself. It is best to get it done somewhere you can visit easily. (A company based in Wales, advertising a range of brake products for Subarus, took payment for our one off brackets and bells but never supplied and quickly became impossible to contact.)
Jinx, please PM me the details of said company. I\'m in S/E London. ;)
Thanks

I must admit, of topic about brakes, but am surprised at the amount of FD owners who like Porsches! I find them one of the dullest cars on the road, yes they may be fantastically engineered and perform day on day without fault and be devastingly quick but they are just, well, so German....
Characterless and bland. Very surprised that a guy with an eye for what is probably one of the sexiest cars to come out of Japan (rx7) would be interested in such a car! Each to their own, what makes the world different.
Off topic but I would rather have a \'90 911 turbo widebody than my RX7. Its just an icon. And I hate 911\'s. Its the challenge that attracts me.
Cheers Gary they look good, need to save a bit first as those plus pads, discs, bells and brackets soon add up!
Whats all this talk of Porsches! They are good cars but they\'ve had more refinements than RX-7s to get that far, I\'ll stick with the RX-7 as it\'s far less common.
Ben,
I know that Brembo makes a handbrake caliper for the rears, Revolution uses them together with their uprated rear Ap calipers. http://revo-tune.jp/catalogue/detail.php?id=71
Maybe you already knew about them, but I have been looking for quite some time for a good setup for the rear.. and those would open up alot of closed doors.
/Daniel
Funny I\'ve looked all through their site and never noticed that! Thanks that is an ideal solution... although they aren\'t cheap!! I can\'t afford it at the moment, hopefully I\'ll get onto it soon - you been able to start on your revo V-mount yet?
Yes, its not like buying candy.. But hey.. if you buy quality.. you only cry once..
Regarding my vmount.. I can\'t even begin to explain how much my fingers are itching.. But I won\'t start to fit it until I get home from Japan.. So one month of vacation/buying/filling my suitcase. And then it\'s home to my garage.. Will post pictures of the whole build once I am home.. Figured I wanted a Efini Ypipe as it would look better with all the other metal piping. Have to fit my new injectors and possibly get a flywheel/clutch from knightsports, and fit a FEED silenced midpipe together with the Vmount.. Maybe Ill skip the clutch setup as my wallet will be pretty empty when getting home.. but I do need to buy that silenced midpipe (and cross all the fingers I have that I won\'t experience boost creeping)
Regarding the ABS;
It doesnt matter what brakes or tyres you have the ABS will still work. The ABS works with a geared ring and a magnetic sensor, so the type of tyre and type of brakes will make absolutely NO difference as to whether the ABS works or not. The ABS does not work by measuring deceleration but measures the relative difference between the wheels.
Just wanted to point out some incorrect information.
