Title: Clunking/Knocking noise from rear - bushes??
Post by: ash on March 22, 2007, 10:06:41 AM
I hoping someone could clarify an issue i have with my FD

I have been driving the Rx round a little recently and have found that when i accelerate in 1st or 2nd that i get a clunking.knocking noise from the rear. First i thought it was the exhaust hitting the under pan, but all rubber mounts are fine.

I have read through the search posts, and kind of come to the conclusion it maybe rear suspension bushes or gearbox mounts (although the gearbox effectively floats - could someone point out where the mounts are then?). :2Confused

The other thing is when i start the rx it shakes quite a bit when cold, it needs to be tuned but also the gearstick does move up and down quite alot when accelerating. My last 2 RX7 never did this, could it be the mounts or bushes?

Any help always appreciated. Its a 1993 FD UK - standard setup.

The gearbox uses the engine mounts and the diff mounts via the ppf.

Thanks spartacus, noticed you have sold your PPF - just missed out there then!

Do you think it could be the diff mounts causing the gearstick lever to jump around more than normal and creating the knocking noise?

Done a bit more research - what about the ROSE type bushes?? Could these be causing the noise/movement?

my had the same problem.

when i change gears 1, 2, etc i was hearing some noise from the back, some sort of a tap noise. at first i thougt it was brakes bcoz it also happened when i put the brakes on. thought they were too tight but got it checked, came out clean.

mechanic told me my bushes were dead.

it was the play in the bushes which was making the noise. there are quite a number of them in the rear suspension system but the main one that would probably cause your problem i think is the one that is directly beneath the rear disc. its around 20mm i might be wrong, its straight, not bends etc and assembles from under the disc to the rest of the suspension.

went to mazda, told it would cost me £300+ to change the bushes. the that metal stick was about £163 without the plastic bush in it!

so went back to my mechanic ... and magic. he fixed them by putting some metal washers, no noise, no problem. and it only costed me £30!

so i recommend you check your bushes mate

Ferruh - thanks for the advice! I will jack the car up at the weekend and have a look at that particular bush but also the others.

the noise i get is more of a clunk noise rather than tap but it could be that the bushes are far more worn on mine than yours were? Thanks again mate

The bouncing gear stick sounds like a cracked power plant frame, or may be engine/diff mounts. The clunking is probably one or more of the spherical bearings on the outer end of the rear lower arm (one of which joins to the trailing arm), or outside of the upper wishbone.

try to move the metal suspension bar that i was telling you about under the disc with your hand and see if it will play about. if it does then you might have to find a mechanic and pay him about 50 quid so he can put a washer or some sort in there to stop the play. i am sure thats what your problem is.

mazda wont sell the plastic washer in that bar, they will sell you the whole thing for £326 for both sides...which is a waste of money really

my ppf looks new but i had major wobbling on deceleration & the gear lever moved about loads, i have done my engine mounts after checking the ppf and that has made the world of difference but i have to fit the diff mounts i have too to complete the job. I would say it would be the same as this.

oh and my car handled like it had a mind of its own before doing this as one engine mounts had collapsed and i guess was ruining the handling completly so ou should feel a big difference once done.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Ferruh, i will try this at the weekend and see if there is any play. Could any of these fail or get an advisory on an MOT, as the car only passed yesterday after failing on an anit roll bar front bracket.

m4drx - I think the PPF is fine too, when it was having its MOT i had a quick look underneath and there was no cracking to that part. Wish i spent longer under there now as it would have been alot easier to look at the underneath of the car on lifts rather than a jack!

i thought exactly the same! but before i realised that there was a problem it had been up on ramps loads but it is much harder on you back! lol get it up on some and take a peak some sidestreet garages might let you use a ramp for free anyway.

Is this the suspension arm (arrow in red) that Ferruh was talking about that i should try and see if there is excessive movement in?

And are the two brackets at the front of the picture in the middle the ones that hold the diff, i.e. the diff mounts?

Cheers
Ash

Ash I will put money it\'s your Diff Mounts that are gone...
When these go, they eventually take out the Engine Mounts shortly after....

So you may have both shot...
