Title: which oil??
Post by: Jim_rx7 on March 15, 2007, 03:10:49 AM
I would usually use either 10w40 fully synthetic oil or 10w50 on previous cars. After doing a bit of searching I\'ve seen people saying use mineral oil?

What I want to know is basically what oil I can go buy from halfords that\'ll do the job??

thanks in advance.

Is there any oil I could buy from Halfords that I could use? Simply because it would mean I could get it alot faster than onlin ordering and do the oil change asap.

Castrol GTX 10/40 mineral oil is what I use. Came recommended by the guy who rebuilt my engine.

Could not agree more, mine has used GTX 10/40 all the time I have owned it.

I was warned off Magnatec by one of the reputable rx7 specialists.

Cheers,

Richard

Or am I wrong?

Synthetic/part synthetic is man made. Mineral oil is pure and natural! Simple as that. Just have a look at the label in Halfrauds or whatever and you should be right.

@Bazza... I take it you bought the FD then?? :)

i belive synthetic burns black as well ?? mineral burns clear --ish ?

Synthetic does not burn as well as Mineral ( It can leave gummy deposits) ,and these engines feed oil into the engine for lube and that oil should burn.
Also the oil control rings are affected by some synthetic oils,so use mineral oil as has been suggested.

lol have a read of this (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26912&highlight=oil+base+stock) its not as simple as that, there is a lot of conflicting opinions on this subject but i think for a standard or close to it the castrol oil mentioned above is probably best.

I\'ve used both Castrol GTX and Duckhams mineral oils in 3 rotaries with no engine problems. But tell me what Castrol GTX I should use now, since there\'s GTX for modern engines and GTX for old engines (the latter has some extra gap sealants/additives)? Our engine is deffinately old!

mmm... good point. Which GTX... modern or older one?

I\'d say go for the new engine one. I guess it may depend on the mileage of your engine but I don\'t think additives are good for rotaries so may be best to avoid the stuff for older engines. (read Carl\'s post above about gummy deposits!)

Yip.. picked some of it up "the for newer engines" and a filter too. Only £15 on trade at my work. Not bad!

I only use genuine Mazda oil filters, with a new sump plug washer every time, (3000 mile intervals - about a year and a few months for us). I think it\'s important to use genuine filters because otherwise the quality of the materials and of any non- return valve to prevent draining back is suspect.
