Title: Stall issues
Post by: leon on March 13, 2007, 08:25:12 PM
Hi guys, ive done a little reserch onto similar symtoms and it keeps pointing to the tps but i would love to hear some oppinions.

the car seems to be running great at the moment, starts first time form cold , even when warm but for some odd reason she just keeps cutting out at what seems to be random moments, first time it happned i thought it was me, new car and all - but 2nd time i was outside of the car looking under the bonnet, the car just goes no drama or anything. as if its just been turned up . dash board lights up like a christmas tree. give it a few moments then start it up again perfectly normal.  happned to me three times today, one time at a lights on a buisy roundabout x.x 2nd time ont he driveway 3rd time another set of lights heading of to the gym (about 40 minsago) only common thing is its at idle when it cuts.

Does only happen AFTER a warm restart? What I mean is,  it starts fine when warm but soon cuts out?

Nope itle do it any time, did it once while fully warm at the roundabout / home then once at the bottom of the road on the way to the gym car had been sat for a good few hours. just done some reading is this a possible cause of a leaky boost pipe, not totaly genned up on the rx7\'s yet :(

okay been out today, wanred the car up and the first glareing thing i noticed was the idle screw wasnt even touching the leaver it should have been! screwed this down broght the revs up to just above 1k and took her for a run quite civilised infact ifnot slightly higher once the car was fully warm backed the revs of again to what they should be and it idles well now.

Cant imagine its tips, or boost pipes as they would be affected at no boost.
Sounds like you may have solved it, time will tell. Sounded like an intermittent elec fault , but diff to tell.

It could be TPS - i adjusted mine wrongly and i had to keep revving it to stop it from stalling. However, if it hasn\'t been moved lately or anything, there\'s no reason for it to suddenly be incorrectly adjusted.

But, having read your post, looks like it\'s the idle screw. Does it idle correcltly once warmed up?

Oh, and is it tuned at all? Apexi ECU? Single turbo, twin turbo? etc, etc

Funnly enough i dont know the state of tune other than a few hks pipes on the intercooler and a boost guage/turbo timer. doesnt look to be modified, it seems to idle much better now though with the screw adjusted hunts slightly buts its acceptable.:wiggle

Hi mate,

I\'ve just got my first 3rd gen rx7 and mine does the exact same. Starts fine warm/cold, but when I come to a standstill at a junction/lights etc the engine stalls.

Where is this screw that you adjusted (any pics?) and what way did you adjust it? Did you do it once warmed up?

Any help appreciated! I probably know less than you about these rotary beasties!!

the screws on the throttlebody, its got a screw and a nut at the bottom of it (easyist way to describe is look at the throttle cable and the arm, directly behind it is a screw thats stood verticle it\'s pressing on a bar below it), i had to slacken the nut of first then wind the screw down dont have any pics as its dark atm - and im not 100% if this actualy fixed the issue but it hasnt stalled since other than the time i did stall it :o

and yyeah i set the thing when the car was warm, did it when cold only to find the car idled at 2k (woops) fixed that though.

this cars a great big learning curve for me, and i love it!

I\'ll have a look tomorrow. Cheers.

I\'m in the same boat as yourself mate. I\'m used to Turbo jap cars, but the Rx7 is totally new to me! :)

I\'ve had a Mr2 turbo too! God cars! Once they go though they go. I spun mine twice! The Rx7 feels much more balanced tbh.

Any pics pics of the screw before I go hunting for it and start turning everything I find? lol

Gah sorry, been outaside all day working on the car, and yeah i know what you mean about it, the cars are bolted to the road but once they get out of shape if you dont catch it they go,  always sickend me at winter time to hear of all the mr2\'s going backwards into things.

This one. (http://www.leonharland.com/screw.gif)

thasts the screw i wound down. after losening the bolt.

aah... had a look. Mine is already wound in quite a bit. Will try winding it in anyway and see what happens.

ahh heh, well i dont know why but mine was not even touching the plate under neeth enough of a gap you could fit a screw driver inbetween (and this was while it was running):2eek

Although mine is screwed in, it does look like it can go a little and tbh I wouldn\'t imagine it would have to move much to make a difference.

If It doesn\'t resolve the issue, then it\'s back to the drawing board for me.

For anyone else reading this with any ideas....

It only does it once the car is warmed up. It sounds like a similar problem I had with my old Mr2 with a vent to atmos bov. Anyway, I\'ll try turning the screw tomorrow at some point.
