Title: Auto Gearbox Problem! Opinion/help?
Post by: khyber pass on March 12, 2007, 10:37:26 PM
Well...car was on road for precisely 15 days before it packed up AGAIN!

Eddie- funny to see you come past as I\'m considering kicking the **** out of it!

This time fault is on the AUTO box:

turn car on, engage gear, drive off, get 100 yds and at about 40-50mph AND suddenly lose gear selection and just free revving. It has engaged neutral....
roll to a halt...

turn it off. start it up and it will select again and the same as above happens...

Now, does that mean a cheap fix or a gearbox replacement? HELP...:3gears-rh :3gears-rh

Ta

Steve

Gary

many thanks for that. Luckily, already have a friend with a spare, but not wanting to replace if a simple sync or other simple fix.

Cheers again though. Much appreciated

Crikey, never heard of this before - thought I\'d seen it all/experienced it all wrt auto gearboxes!!

Did you get the "HOLD" light come on? KOKO (key on key off) resets the ATecu, strange that it solves the problem.
If I were you I\'d do a search/post on http://www.rx7club.com/ they seem to have more knowledge about \'auto tranny\' problems.

Sorry I couldn\'t be of more help.

Another case for the Auto only section!!

Have you had it mapped at a higher power than stock?

After my mapping around 1000 miles later the gearbox started playing up until I completly lost every gear.

I was warned by the tuner this may happen

Imego - my rex is bog standard. No tuning, just servicing by Pip...

The latest is that a local gearbox specialist suggests that it is a FILTER issue??? (what filter!)
Apparently, if it gets clogged, oil not getting through puts gearbox into neutral mode...turn off....oil flows back..resets box to ON AGAIN,,BLAH BLAH

Gonna have to wait 1.5 weeks to find out, as the fella is off on hols....typical

But certainly good news if it\'s a relatively small "filter, oil and service" issue...

:)

there is a large filter on the gearbox ( or there is on a FC ) - think of it like the air filter - but an oil one in the gear box

i think its on the underside of it - held on by about 10 bolts

could be worth you consulting the manual :D

Slushboxes depend on extremely clean oil even more than an engine so it\'s entirely conceivable that it does have a filter in it. Probably a very fine mesh and that may well clog up over time.

So yeah, I can kinda see that happen...

just changed my transmission fluid (all 8.6 f\'in litres of it!) care of MikeyH (thanks m8). Car was fine before but perhaps a bit slow to kick down - thought this was the norm for auto boxes. Anyroad, now it changes down (and up, but who cares about that?) fast as anything - scared the bejesus out of me the first time so a blockage / filter sounds possible.
have you changed the transmission fluid - have to drop the gearbox sump (a very messy job) because Mazda in their wisdom failed to include a drain plug - worth doing if not to see.
let me know how you get on - us auto-farts need to stick together

Just seen this thread matey.
I actually spotted you on the Denso island but it took me 5-10 minutes to get my student to turn around to ask if you needed a hand (lost your number BTW)

As mentioned hope just an oil issue.
I don\'t know much about the RX-7 auto but on my Volvo there was a solinoid that caused the same problem and that was a reletively cheap fix about £70 IIRC.
This auto guy should know when he looks at it as this is a common problem on auto\'s just finding the cause should be easier for him.
Let us know how you get on and if anything to help.

Cheers m8

number - 07702098656.

Problem is waiting for the guy to get back form his hols(typical)...twiddling thumbs...phoned all the auto places in the yellow and thompsons but nobody in the area biting my hand off to touch a 93RX7 auto - wonder why!
