After having some serious voltage issue with the charging system on my FD im investigating the causes.
I\'ve installed a HKS Twin spark and a Craig Davies 80l/min Electric Waterpump and have the battery Installed in the boot.
I\'ve swapped the battery over to a big standard one from my PC680 drycell because it just wasn\'t staying charged.
I recently installed 0 gauge for the negative line running it back to the engine bay. Im not a fan of the standard grounding cable and may install thicker cable next in place of the stock grounding cable.
When I check the PFC I only see initially 13v and then it drops down to 12.3v once the pump properly kicks in. This is at about 3-4k rpm.
Im going to borrow a ring type Amp meter from work and see what the alternator is actually putting out. It was tested last year when I powdercoated the body because I\'d coated a grounding point and needed some professional assistance.
Has anybody had an alternator rewound to 150amp from the stock 100amp ?? Is there anywhere somebody can reconmend ? How much would it cost to do ? I\'ve seen people do it on Rx7club, but thats all USA companies.
Cheers in advance.
Shaun
Shaun,
are you running any other equipment that may draw a lot of current? And do you know how much the water pump is supposed to draw?
T.
Im not completely sure how much draw its supposed to pull....... Im not eevn sure how much the Twin spark takes too.
I don\'t have a big stereo in the car (keep weight down).
I do have a spare alternator so may swap them over next weekend and see if that makes a difference.
Shaun
The waterpump only uses 7.5amp current, but its using that all the time in my setup. Past 70deg its running 100%.
Looks more like the alternator is knackered !
Shaun
Probably a good idea to do that - I can\'t see a waterpump drawing that much current, nor the ignition. Swapping out the alternator does sound like a good idea...
Edit - just saw your second post. 7.5A is less than the headlights draw so it should definitely charge with the lights off.
I got my alternator rewound a good few years ago on my golf clipper, this was as i had a huge stereo install, i used a place called sahibs in Alperton (north west London) its on Hanger Lane, cost me if i can remember around £75ish.
but yeah i would upgrade the grounding cables and also the positive cable that runs from the alt to bat.
im sure that a place in chorley does them mate - just behind the B&Q but cant think what they are called
Cheers, will have to investigate the place in chorley :D
Shaun
forgot to post that I have got this issue fixed. I\'ve installed my spare alternator and the car is showing 14.1 - 14.5v constantly :D
Shaun
Did you find that place in chorley?
Never looked in the end, will need to in the near future though !
