Title: Electric Supercharger Turbo Kits?
Post by: khyber pass on March 09, 2007, 11:34:00 PM
Anybody seen these on Fleabay....

Electric Supercharger Turbo conversion Mazda RX7 8
All new ETS Supercharger kit Item number: 200085631276

Anyone want to tell me if it will really give another 20BHP ?

£130 for another 20bhp (and more power low down) seems too good to be true...

Not a clue, but I\'m sure one of you guys knows...

Cheers

Dont waste your money :)   It\'d actually reduce your power out put :spank

^^^ What he said ^^^

It\'s going to be such a restriction in the inlet path - stock turbos can pull way more air than an electric fan.  Principle is sound, but the size of motor you would need for the HP ranges we use would be huge - you\'d need another alternator to power it. :D

In a word no, you are putting a extra restriction in the inlet and the amount of power the fan has is never going to overcome this. Good for the Saxo boys for the bling factor i suppose and thats about it.

a m8 of mine have 2 off these on his 306, he seemed to think it made a difference lol.. the only sure way to find out is to have a dyno b4 and after i guess.. cant see it tho lol..just buy a pc fan for 2quid and make your own

look at turbo effeciencies......
A turbo (or fan in this case) in its simplest form needs to not only produce pressure (so work against a back pressure), but high flow (read: velocity). These have an inverse relationship. The best example of this would probably be to imagine trying to fill a balloon up with a PC fan: whilst flow is adequete, the adverse pressure due to the elasticity of the baloon means it is unable to fully inflate the balloon.
Make sense?
jesus ive gone off on one there!

so, in summary, you\'d need a fan capale of blowing up a balloon really quickly to get more power from your rx8.

um. Something like that!

Given that the average supercharger may well require 5-10HP to pull enough air for even a bit of boost, you will need an electric motor of similar power to do the same job.

1HP ~ 750W, so lets say you had a 5HP motor - this is going to need 3.75Kw of juice to power it - at 12V Supply that equates to 312.5 Amps - that\'s going to need some serious cables to power the motor - I am guessing about 4.8cm thick !!

You also have to generate that electricity from somewhere - so you need a big ass alternator too - I\'m pretty sure the stock FC/FD one\'s are good for upto about 100 Amps - you\'ll need 3 times that !

Then you have the size of that alternator and the electric supercharger motors to consider - they are not going to be small.

It\'s theoretically possible of course, but current motor and generator technology isn\'t there yet. A mechanically driven geared compressor is still your best bet. :Thumbs-up

Like the description dubber91....that\'s the nearest I\'ve come to understanding it!! Helped me get to grips with JJ/Profs/Kev-Yorks detail...

Cheers to all for the info...

think you`d need a fan the size of the ones used at rolling roads. with a funnel to reduce size to the inlet.

the extra weight of the fan on the front would throw out the rex`s handling. may get an extra 1hp
also might get pulled over for it blocking drivers vision.

You could buy a hairdryer instead, remove the heating element and rig that up to your battery to blow air into your engine - not!

QUALITY! total bananas!

Only problem is having a guy or two hanging out of your bonnet might have an adverse affect on drag co-efficiency!
