As some of you might know my door handles are both bust. As such I am needing to replace them.
I have contacted Mazda and they are getting back to me. In the mean time I thought I would have a look at the problem. I removed all I needed to but I could not see the problem. The lock works fine I can move that rod to make the car lock and unlock but I can\'t see what part is meant to move when I move the handle, can someone please help. The rod that should move seems locked in place and can\'t move. I can take a picture and show the 2 rods if need be.
Thanks
Steve
As a fellow member of the broken door handle club, I have looked into this also.
All you need to do to open the door (if its unlocked) is push down on the metal rod. Thats it. You will need to pull the door though whilst pushing down to open it.
This metal rod connects to the plastic handle that you would normally pull to get in, via that little yellow clip. Its a very simple mechanism connecting the rod to the handle.
The trouble with mine is the actual plastic handle broken so it no longer ocnnects with the rod properly.

All the clips I saw appear to be connected, I expected to see something broken? It all appears okay except the handle just comes up without moving anything, cant see what should be attached to it.
OK yours sounds the same as mine.
Attached to the rods are 2 clips - a yellow and white one. If you flick these (up I think) the will unclip from the rods. The handle will still be connected by a wire to illumite the lock, but as mine was broken anyway I just cut it.
Once this is done the handle will be completely removed. I suspect that you will then see the problem easily. Its likely to be that the handle has become loose, and repeated opening has worn a groove into it where it attached to the metal lock mechanism. As such, when the handle is pulled, it now just slides to the side of the metal, instead of the metal being pulled with the handle like it should be.

Hi, on my 1st generation, the locking part (that you operate with the key) appears to move a plate in line with the latch part (that you operate with the handle). When unlocked this plate forces the latch to open the door. when locked, the plate is moved away and the latch doesnt do anything.
