Hi guys.
Bought my first RX7 on a k plate about 1 month ago, it has 66000 on the clock and is completely standard apart from decat exhaust.
Having spoken to people on other forums i am getting a mixed feedback.
I have a family, i dont have lots of spare cash lying around and am being told that they need a rebuild at 60k, this worries me a great deal!
Is this true?
If so should i get rid now while it still runs?
I cannot afford a rebuild.
Thanks.
These cars are not cheap to look after. If you don\'t have cash to spare to maintain it (Normal servicing, etc) then you are indeed best off getting rid of it.
i have the cash to maintain it, just not to rebuild it.
Best way to get an indication of the state of the engine is to get it compression tested. Whether it needs one or not is totally down to your car and how it has been treated, you might be fine or you might not. Until you find out for certain everything is mere speculation.
thanks for the info

unfortunatly, rebuilds could be considered part of maintenance :2Rolleyes , it is best to try to keep money aside (even save on a monthly basis) for a rebuild fund should the worst happen. I struggled to fund my first rebuild, fortunatly I had a good bonus the month after it happened :cheers otherwise I\'d have been rexless for longer than I was... (A bit like now :2Rolleyes )

that more or less answers my question, although, everytime i think about getting rid, i look at it and fall in love all over again :xconfused :xconfused
well, depends on how much you use the car, work it out this way 8-10k per year = rebuild every 6-7 years, so £2500 every 7 years is £350 per year on top of normal maintenance....
doesn\'t sound so bad when you think of it that way? :)
yeah true. its got 66 on the clock and is used only at weekends and for short periods of time, say 3-4 hours everyweekend.
BUT that DOES mean more than likely it is due one soon, as i cant vouch for how the previous owner drove it.
Is it an import??
You never know.. it may of had a rebuild before it came over.
yeah it is an import but has been in the uk for about 1 year. im going to check the log books tonight, **** knows what im looking for as its all in jap but they do diagrams so may be able to decifer it!
Take it to a spcialist for a compression test this will give you an idea of the condition of the engine!
As above get it compression tested from a rotary specialist
Hello again.
You have a Decat pipe too? Do you have a Boost gauge fitted? Just watch you don\'t get any Spike or creap when its cold (Overboosting) you will proberly know if its a Stock ECU (It will cut out).
Hi. yeah i have a decat.
it only ever boosts .5 bar mate
Unfortunatly getting a compression test is not the complete answer, many of these engines that fail, don\'t lose a tip, if it\'s starting well and running well chances are that the compression is good enough, but what kills them is they lose water seals, still a rebuild, irrispective of mileage covered, (some give up at half your miles!) you can have no idea what corrosion inhibitors if any have been used in the cooling system for the last 13 years or so, The first thing i would do is do a coolant flush and use a good Anti-freeze with good corrosion inhibitor, sooner the better,
Bob

OK, Just keep an eye on it, its quite comon for FD\'s to overboost when it gets Cold at night or Foggy when you have a Decat, they can also miss there Target boost as the Exhaust Flows much better than its suposed to and the Wastegate can\'t cope..
88k is the magic number.
hi mate, you could sell it and by another car and engine blows on that. my mate had a 6 year old car and engine went bang :2eek

Although it\'s true, the above is an (INDICATION) thats all of the state of the engine, thats not garantee, thats it\'s all good. I done all that, and was told by Pip that it was not spot on but he has seen worse, but it should last another 5 to 10K and then found out 800 miles later " when it went pop, the engine was shot through miles on the
clock. But you see what I mean.:wave
Anyway! you thnk you have a problem. My engine has only done 1500 miles, and cost over £35000 and Pip says it will need a refresh after about 40 to 50K. Although to be fair it should not cost more than about 4K to do it. But sorry to say, if you have to worry about it, you can\'t afford it or should not have it. Maybe I will sell my thing then. hehehehehe
cost over £35000??
I know what you mean about this mate, I bought mine and it had an engine rebuild but have done quite a bit more to the car now. At the time I didnt have any spare cash in case it blew but now have managed to save a few k just in case.
The trouble is its money for a house deposit so the missus will go spare if I have to use it.
Women and cars....a deadly combination !!
Good luck whatever you do.

the engine and conversion £35800 is about right :Typing

 :Talking1 :Talking1 :Talking1 :Talking1 :Talking1 I dont think so, we just let you men think that, keeps you on your toes !!!!
Just keep it! youll find the money some how if it ends up you do!
Meeeeeeeowwwww!!!!!:WaveBye
At the end of the day just cuz your car has done 66K miles DOESN\'T mean it will need a rebuild. Take it to a specialist and they\'ll tell you.
I had mine a month it had done 40K and it needed a rebuild. How did I know it needed one? because it dumped coolant everywhere!
BUT do take it to a specialist, I took it to someone with a BAD reputation on this forum and I\'ve just dropped my car down at Hayward rotary for its 2nd rebuild in 2 years :(
You don\'t say if its losing water or anything. Is it difficult to start, when cold. What about when it\'s hot?
If the only problem is boost related it could well just be a hose that has gone. Or maybe some crazy Japanese person swapped the ECU over for something that boosted less (quite why they would do that I don\'t know), I had an aftermarket ECU in mine, which the previous owner and the importer didn\'t know about. I only found it when I put the Apexi in.
An engine rebuild is a worse-case scenario.
