Ok is an Rx7 considered as a super car? Or even what constitutes a super car. Interesting though! Well I think so. What about a porker! is that one, Even better what is a Hyper car. :xconfused
They were on about this on Top Gear a couple of weeks ago. In their eyes, a super car was something high performance, pretty expensive, but something you could actually drive (e.g. Ferrari 360, Porsche 911, etc).
A hypercar was something that was so extreme it was almost undriveable - certainly you couldn\'t use it daily (they cited pretty much all Lambo\'s at being hypercars).
I\'ve always associated 200mph+ top end with being a hyper car
Just a very fast car.
Much as I love the FD it\'s got a dull interior and build quality is 1990s jap - mechanically good but not outstanding.
Not a super car (911 Turbo, F430, Lambo Galladro, AMV8, Ford GT, etc).
Note that I don\'t include the normal (n/a) 911s in there. Only the Turbo/GT2 would count.
Not a HyperCar (Veyron, Carerra GT, Enzo, Mac F1, Murci, Koeningseggegegggege, Zonda, etc.)
IMO.
i look at mine as an extension to my wallet, love it to bits :D
I look at mine as the best purchase I\'ve ever made.. apart form the nice pair of shoes and top I bought last weekend but I will get bored of them after I\'ve worn them once or twice.. :p :D.:)
Let me put it ths way using 2 examples...
Firstly I was in the pub with the lads a few weeks back and a friend of mine currently has an Audi TT 1.8 thats he\'s throwing loads of money at to get it to 360/400 bhp mark
I told him of my recent purchase and which he decided to do a little test.
He went up to the nearest girl and showed her a picture of his car and mine (not conclusive I know but it seemed a good idea at the time:D )
She said she liked mine but didn\'t know what it was....
At which point he started to laugh saying, "Ha ha she doesn\'t even know what it is!!"
So I replied, "Does that make it more common or less common then?"
The smile quickly slipped off his face.
Secondly I was in a 2 way traffic jam the other night. There was a Lambo Galliardo coming the other way. It just so happened we pulled up opposite eachother and he leant out the window saying, "Nice car fella....."
Before the trolls start, no, he wasn\'t taking the mick.
What i\'m pointing out is that whenever you see a rex, and the true enthusiasts out there understand, people know that it is a serious piece of kit. That it\'s a drivers car and they see the timeless shape the way we owners do.
I\'m not saying it\'s the best car in the world.....but it\'s right up there....and for a car that was designed nearly 2 decades ago?....thats not bad going in my books.....
Surely its a Jap super car though, along with the NSX and R34.
*Ummm. I agree, it is a Jap super car.
But! for me a super car is something, which has something 99% of your normal motors don\'t have. Sports Style shape. Something unusual, It\'s has to be fast, very fast, to normal cars. Exotic something unobtainable to most people. Can\'r realy put your finger on it, in the sense that not one thing. it\'s morw a collection of things. It\'s individuality not to say it\'s the only one, but it\'s something which you just don\'t see every day! Not like your escorts of the World.
To me thats a super car. So, does the RX7 meet the above, I think they do. But thats my view and only my view. Your free, to not agree, but there we go. So is the 3 rotor a super car, it does or at least should do around 200 + .A Zonda would not get away from it. You won\'t see many around thats for sure. And, it\'s not a car you would use evey day. So where does that leave my 20B then. If, of course it\'s not a super car. :2Confused
The RX7 isnt actually a lot slower than alot of the newer lambos. I have a top gear test video, they do 0-60 in the murcialago in 4.8 and quarter in the high 12s.
My 7 standard quarters in 13.2 and book 0-60 is 4.9!
I think there is a lot of snobbery in the old Super car club. Very few Japanese cars are considered Super Cars by magazines and car clubs and stuff, perhaps the only exception being an NSX.
To be honest though I\'m not sure what I\'d call an RX7, cos to me a standard Porsche 911 isn\'t what I\'d call a super car, It\'s a high end sports car/coupe.
With a few mods it\'s a bargain basement supercar muncher.
Drop 15K into a buying and sorting a rex and you\'ll eat anything upto "hypercar" for breakfast...
Not only that, but it looks better than most too.
I love my rex :chat
i class our jap cars as sports cars, supercars kick in with the likes of mid-range ferrari, porsche, bentley, aston martins etc. and hyper cars are obviously the pinnacle of the range
yes our cars are as fast as super cars in some instances but they dont have the prestige or the price tag when they were new of the prestige marques.
Your all wrong

Paul..
In Standard trim, NO WAY.
In modified trim, maybe it could be made into one. JOKE!
500Hp + Woodgrain Luxury interior + hydaulic aero kit + Excessive Price tag + Gull wing kit + a hint of Understeer = Supercar
I think the Japanese sum up the RX7 as "Pure Sports" car which I think fits it.
It\'s one of the last, fast rear wheel drive cars that is fun to drive or rewards a good driver with balanced handling and moderate speed point to point.
It\'s not a super car as the pricing dictates (Even the stupid $110,000 Australian SP version wasnt expensive enough)
If it were released tomorrow, It would sit beside the 350Z and thats not a supercar either.
Russ.
yes i agree with shaftser i think it is in the name you say you drive a porsche or you say you drive a mazda what would people think? ok one could be an old porsche 928 and the mazda fd rx7 in my opinion the rx7 as a car is a lot better but to the average person a porsche is a porsche. i have worked on many cars like TVRs, porsches etc and i dont think they are as well made as many of the jap cars, an FD has a perfect 50;50 weight distribution just look how far back the engine is mounted it has alloy double wishbones can the same be said for a 911? i think where the japanese went wrong is that they needed to give it a posh name and better levels of interior would the 911 have been as popular if it were called the VW 911? i see many japanese cars as a blank canvas to build your own supercar, i think they have all the basics covered and when the aftermarket modifies them properly they are amazing but because the dont come out of the factory like this i think they are performance cars and damn good at it they are! some well disagree but thats life just my opinion:wave

Paul..
BINGO ... A High Performance car is what the rex is.
Super car is ferrari and Lambo etc ... things that cost 150k upwards ! They might not be quicker but have that status.
Supercars are for cnuts.
I love my rex.
She is super as far as I\'m concerned.
I don\'t care what it is I\'ll take it on.............:Thumbs-up
The respect for the RX7 is out there you just have to show them. I look at my FD as a performance car that eats supercars and bikes.:wave
Pacific Muscle!
Its a proper sports car.
Now my Rex has a Saggy partner, got to say they\'re totally different, but boy, am i glad i kept my FD!:D
Have to admit if I had to have one or the other, I\'d pick the yellow monster. ;)
Fish
Hi Danny,
For sheer exhiliration, the yellow wins, but i still love my FD and will never sell it for peanuts!...so put it on a low yearly mileage insurance, so not expensive.
give it a weekly blast to clear the cobwebs and charge the battery!!:Giggle
Ooo sh*t, here\'s a piston!!:rollin
Some good ideas floating about on what a super car is: Just reading the comments. it does appear most people recon Price is a major factor. Not to say your wrong! But why should price determine what a car is? :xconfused or not! I thought a family car is your regular 4 door saloon jobY ( back to the escort type things) Estates, well we know what makes an estate , I hope. you can have sports estates but still an estate. NOW, it gets hard, whats a sports car, 2 seater 2+2 style car which is more a drivers car handling and streamlined. Performenace sports, as above but with performance under the hood.
So what is a super car???????????:2Rolleyes :2Rolleyes :2Rolleyes So it must be a car which is a sports car, which also is a performance version, but with a lot more go than normal. And, don\'t forget that price tag! loads U dosh! SO just a thought, if an MGB had an LS1 engine stuffed into it, and someone spent about another 60K on body mods and interior, would it be a super car? It\'s an idea. What about the Pantara De Thomaso, Magic machine, But! tops out at around 145 150MPH 0 to 60 in around 5.5 sec, Now you can buy a nice one for around 29 to 35K. It\'s exotic, Italian 2 seater super car. Now theres many Rex machines out there, which would kill this machine stone cold dead. and they have spent the money to. 25 40K is not that hard to find on a Rex, so why is not a super car. I know it\'s snobb thing. must be, as it don\'t make much sense otherwise. :Thumbsup!
I fitted HKS twin plate clutch, that rendered it undrivable at low speed and only usable on nice open roads, so is mine a hypercar now? ;)
I like the term \'Pure sports car\' as that is essentially what it is. Built from the ground up as a light weight sports car, inspired by the Japanese type zero aircraft in the way they reduced weight.
