Title: Crazy rev counter...
Post by: croig on March 04, 2007, 11:18:32 AM
Hi there,
Just bought me a lovely FD all is good apart from the rev counter that seems to work intermittantly.  Sometimes it works, sometimes i doesnt do anything at all, and sometimes it \'dances\' all over the show :3Confused .

Has anyone had any experience with anything like this? Is it likely to be easy to sort or cheap(ish)?

Any help appreiciated!

Thanks
Craig

Hiya mate, Had exactly the same problem, found a second hand guage from a very good friend, and its all sorted now! Not too bad to fit, but talk to someone before you start doing it. Ive seen whole instrument clusters thingys go for £140 ish, i think, but if you can find someone who has just the rev guage it should be cheaper

Andy

Would it be likely to be a loose connection? Or are you saying its a problem with the actual guage then?

Thanks for the response!

I remember someone going through this on the group, from what I can recal they had a fix and found it to be the capacitors on the back of the gauge.

Have a search I am sure it was on her or maybe FDUK.

Cheers

Yeah, remember that thread. thought about looking further into that, but easier just to find a second hand guage and drop it in. took me about 45 mins including swaping the uk and jap faces. worth what it cost me imho

I know what you mean I did the same, not very good with solder:)
Think I paid 60 for mine.
I do have a spare but it has no black face on it as it was removed for scanning in to make a custom set of dials.

If you want it make me an offer.

Cheers

I was the same, mine would stick approx 3.5K rpm. I bought a second hand one from Jimmys for about £60-70 and it was sorted.

Il have a bit of a potter around with it when i pick the car up on sat, and if i cant find an easy solution (i.e. loose connection) il get a new one.

How much would you accept for your spare Eddie? When u say theres no black face on it, do you just mean the facia bit with the revs printed on it?

Thanks for all the responses guys! :)

the face and needle are easy enough to change onto the new one, just be careful removing the needle, easy to break it! If you need any advice, you know where we are!

if you want mate ive got a rev counter that i was saving for spares if you have no joy. The only problem is i dont think its converted to mph
Title: Crazy rev counter...
Post by: croig on March 08, 2007, 09:03:18 PM
Silly question then but, do the rev counters need converting into mph? surely they just show the revs so it doesnt matter whether its mph or km?

Or am i being stupid and missing something?!
Title: Crazy rev counter...
Post by: LeedsLad on March 08, 2007, 10:25:06 PM
duhh sorry me not reading the post again!!!! no they don\'t need converting mate  i for some reason was talking about a speedo but ive got a rev counter aswell:D
Title: mph
Post by: Eddie on March 08, 2007, 10:30:53 PM
You are correct croig you dont have to convert the tacho to MPH its the speedo which is converted, a chip it attached to the back of the dials.

Hope you solve your problem anyway saves you some money that way.

Ok, been driving her around a fair bit yesterday and about to go out now, however the rev counter seems to be working a lot of the time now but still has its moments!

I know nothing about what to do, but hope this might shed some light into what might be the cause? Dodgy guage, or loose wiring?!

Post by: LeedsLad on March 11, 2007, 06:46:17 PM
as said before it will be the capasitors in the pcb of the tacho, it\'s becoming a common fault
Title: Crazy rev counter...
Post by: croig on March 11, 2007, 10:59:06 PM
Oh, i didnt realise you guys meant the fault was actually on the pcb in the guage!

How much do u want for your spare leedslad?

Post by: Eddie on March 14, 2007, 12:07:48 AM
Hmm follwing a thread about a service beening offered to other mrc users to convert the rear lights to round jobs, cheap service but he got his post removed due to other vendors maybe offering a similar service?.
I think he now offers the service on FDUK instead. MRC would not allow it even though he was only making a small fee. and wanted to fill his days.

so I reckon you will get :spank  for it

I\'m not to bad with a soldering iron so can you tell me which caps I need, I will get to maplins to purchase them.

Cheers for your help, Ill offer my service 5 quid cheaper than you:D  only joking just doing it for the sake really incase another one goes wrong on me.

Trying 2 remove the needle off of my old dial face and put it on my new rev counter... looks like it might break easily...

i have re read this thread and AndyRoi, you said it can be done but be careful - here it goes.. i hope i interpreted that correctly anyway...

needles and facias swapped sucessfully.

All plugged in and working fine!

Just a quick question before i put it all back properly - What should it idle at? Cause at the minute the rev counter is reading about 1750rpm on idle?  That seems a bit high, should it not read about 1000rpm?

Any help appriciated :)

I had a long read through every post that had idle somewhere in it! So its now set to 900ish (possibly a nats whisker below 900) but that\'l do for me! As long as i know roughly what im at!

And il now be able to see when the turbos kick in! yay!

Thanks for everyones help, and in particular LeedsLad! Much thanks to you all!:god

I will post you my old rev counter during the week LeedsLad - could you post me your address to croigus@hotmail.com (croigus@hotmail.com)

Does anybody still have a s/h rev counter they don\'t need?
Was also wondering if you need to pull out the whole dash to get to the instrument cluster? I have some of the manuals from the USA in PDF form, but they don\'t make clear as to what you really have to do just to get the rev counter out...

thanks,

Adrian

Hi there Adrian,
To get the instrument section out, I found that I had to take off the steering cowl off, the bit beneath the steering cowl - where the air vent is for the drivers feet, and at the side of the dash - where the drivers side vent seals against the door.

When these three sections were off I found that the instrument cowl could pull forward with some moderate force (be carefull tho!) so you can reach in behind to where the instrument cluster is to undo it.

From here all I think all it was was a case of undoing 4 screws that held in the instruments and the whole lot came out - so you can get to which ever one you need.

Someone might even have an easier way than this!:Thumbs-up

Craig

Thanks for the advice Croig, I\'ll probably have a go at taking the instrument cowl off this weekend. I just hope I don\'t break all those little clips holding it in!
