Title: Smoke from engine bay!
Post by: Tim_B on March 03, 2007, 03:11:17 PM
After driving my FD today when pulled up I noticed some smoke coming out of the bonnet :2eek .  It was on the left hand side by the brake servo - not that much smoke, almost like something was dripping on hot pipes.

Coolant guage was below halfway, but it sounded like it was boiling! lots of gurgling type noises.  Not good.

Engine is stock btw, so anyone know the likely cause??

:(

only stuff round there is the turbo pack could be a minor water / oil leak onto the exhaust just a guess mind

Coolant lines to and from turbo? Have a look and see if you can spot anything amiss above or infront of the turbopack - both of the rubber lines are known to fail and iirc there is a metal pipe that runs above both turbos that is prone to fail?

Has the same thing recently only mine was the clutch master cylinder. It was leaking passed the plastic union to the reservoir onto the turbo pack.

The bubbling/churning you heard may have just been localised boiling of the water used to cool the turbos

dont rely on the stock water temp gauge either..its not linear so by the time the gauge does move up, your engine is probably knackred!

Thanks for the help.

Can\'t really tell what pipe it is, in fact suspect its coming from one out of sight.  Anyway will get a garage to have a look - but glad to know its prolly nothing too serious

DON\'T drive it, if you suspect your turbos are getting too hot... or even if you suspect the engine itself is getting too hot...

I had a suspected coolant failure on the turbos, which turned out to be a downpipe leak blowing hot gases on the turbos... the smoke i saw was the dirt and crap burning off the turbos housing.

Should\'ve been obvious really cos I knew I had a downpipe leak but it must\'ve got worse to do this.

The bubbling is fine, mine does it too.

If you look down there do you see the smoke coming from around the turbo area? I had a leak from one of the supply pipes and this was the exact same thing. Let us know how you get on at the garage.

I now have a similar thing coming from the front of the engine. I am hoping that its the radiator pipe as this is there. I will pop it up on a stand and have a look at the weekend.....
