Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: McCARTHY on February 28, 2007, 06:33:30 PM
right i got round to doing this today it went as follows.

This is the engine all to gether. Now you have to remove the top intercooler pipe and elbow so you can get to the throttle body (TB). There are 4 nut that have to be removed  to get the elbow off (10mm), 2 in the top corners, 2 in the bottem (you\'ll have to feel for the bottom ones as you can\'t see them)

You should after removing be able to see this.

Now you need to unhook the throttle cable from the linkage and take any visible vacum hoses off form around the TB. There are 2 if i remember! Also there is a plug behind he TB next to the bilk head (pic below) that must be uncliped and a water hose that is positioned underneth it. Again like with the elbow there are 4 nuts holding the TB onto the UIM (10mm)

just a few pics of the TB (don\'t touch these butterflies you need them)

Now to remove the UIM. There are 2 bolts (12mm) at the rear of the UIM on the left as you look at it. These are earths and they need to be taken off. Along the left hand side there are 4 nuts and one bolt (all 12mm) that need to be removed. There are also 2 other bolts (10mm) that need to come out by the relays under the UIM (pic below) and also one just to the right that holds the UIM onto a bracket just to the right of those (10mm).

This pic is just for referance for when it all goes back together so i know where the vaccum pipes go back on.

There is also a plug that need to be undun under the UIM along with one futher vacum hose. Once all this is disconeted it should lift right off.

The rats nest :eek
(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f144/mc_carthy/rx7/P2280009.jpg)

Don\'t forget to block up the lower manifold holes as you don\'t want any nasty bits falling down in there!!!

The UIM and the 2ndry butterflies.

Now there are 2 bolts (10mm) that need to come out (pic below) inorder for you to get the butterflies out. Also, and these where real g*ts, there are four screws that need to be taken out the butterflies themselevs.

once the screws are removed the butterflies can be pulled out. Then with a little tung the rod going through the side of the UIM can be pulled out the side.

That gives you this.

there is a hole left on the side of the UIM this needs to be plugged up. I used chemical metal, but you could use a bolt if you thread the hole.

Thats about it for removong them..... now you just have to remember where all the nuts and bolts that you took off go!!! Have fun people

Also just to add deffiantly worth doing it really does make a difference.

what exactly does this achieve then ???

Allows you to remove a solenoid and cleans up the airflow a little into the engine a little, its a small improvment to remove the butterflies but worth it, its even better if you port it.

Sounds interesting... So why are the secondary butterflies there???

Looks like it would also be a good opportunity to replace all the rats nest hoses as well!

I think they are in place to stop you booting it from cold? they open fully when the cars warm and you can then boot it.
I am sure people in the know will confirm this

Ah, I see! A few turbo cars have a double throttle to limit how much throttle when cold... Sounds like a worth while mod at some point :D

yes they stop the car being hammered when cold, well not stop aid shall we say. With the complete removal it aids airflow, i have to say i notived a difference, once up to temp

a very usfully little mod

I didn\'t see much point in porting it big time like you said due to the fact that i\'m going custom in the future and no big tubby will be put on this engine as it is.

Sounds like a plan I was considering the custom route myseld infact I still might I\'d like to change to a different throttlebody and with a custom LIM and UIM so I can put injectors where I want.

Only reason I ported it was cause I could.

Keep the pics coming.

This was the first mod I did three years ago when going the single turbo route, just make sure any holes left are covered with something like chemical metal, the removal will help airflow to some degree all depends how much boost your pushing to make a relative difference

Or tap the hole and pop a 10mm bolt in.

It would be more long term if tapped with abolt for sure.

I only tapped it cause I had a 10mm tap and I don\'t have any chemical metal.

Tapped M10 is best I reckon. No chance of anything dropping into the engine.

would this make any difference to a stock twin turbo car? iv got a twin hks and exhaust system, no power commander tho so id need a remap if i did this? my plenums off for polishing so would do this also if i can :D

My car at the is stock twin and yes it does help stop disruption of air flow. Worth doing if the UIM is off. I would say take out the middle bit too.

Post by: interloper393 on March 04, 2007, 09:41:43 AM
so its safe to do with the standard ecu then?
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: McCARTHY on March 04, 2007, 10:38:42 AM
Yes mine is on stock ecu as i\'m going microtec in the future (i knowi said AEM before but its just not widey used on the fd\'s and i know the microtec works)

but anyway as i was saying, yes the stock ECU will be find. All you are really doing is aiding air flow.

Do you find its Lumpyer on Idle? when cold? I\'ve been told it acts a bit like a Choke and aids the Cold running?

Those of you that have done it on an FD does it effect The cold start? Do you have to Tweek the map to compensate?
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: McCARTHY on March 04, 2007, 04:37:10 PM
Yes it did get a little lumpy when i first put it back on. Its been fine since.

the ecu would self adjust  wouldnt it?
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: McCARTHY on March 04, 2007, 05:22:08 PM
Well thats what i thought? but not 100%
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: Grizzly on March 04, 2007, 08:36:25 PM
ECU would ajust its self? (does the Stock ECU Map its self?) I did this Mod On a Turbo 2 with a stock Ecu and TBH it effected the the Cold running quite a bit. I was hoping it was a diffrent case with the Fd but it looks like you have to play with the Cold start Map a Bit to get it running sweet when cold.

Post by: efiniste on March 04, 2007, 09:32:14 PM
no problems on mine, but I\'ve done a little more than just removing the double throttle!
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: Grizzly on March 04, 2007, 11:17:11 PM
Are you still running a stock ECU?
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: efiniste on March 04, 2007, 11:42:00 PM
no, power fc.
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: Grizzly on March 04, 2007, 11:54:31 PM
Thats why i ask if it makes a Diffrence if the maps not changed to suit, Oviously the stock Ecu can\'t be changed.

what did you do with the vac pipe that was attached to the actuator?
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: probedb on March 13, 2007, 02:08:44 PM
I\'ve just done this while my engine is apart, got to get a dremel and also try and get a bolt threaded :)

Also ditto on Adie\'s question.
Title: 2ndry UIM butterfly removal
Post by: McCARTHY on March 13, 2007, 02:11:57 PM
simple bloked it. This pipe, as far as i am aware, only uses the vacum to open the Actuator it didn\'t appear to have any other use. I may be wrong of course but it has not effected the running of the car in any way
