Title: Quantities of paint required...
Post by: Archbish on February 27, 2007, 10:55:51 AM
So I\'m looking to start ordering the paint for the car...  (not for the finished article, but I\'m going to batch buy the whole lot together for the discount), and the supplier I\'ve been mailing has suggested the following - I am hoping to get a second opinion on the paint to be ordered to make sure I am heading in the right direction.

1Ltr 20:03 Upol Plastic Primer - primarily for the flexible bumper areas and chin guard.
5Ltr U-POL P88 Cellulose Grey Primer - for the whole of the car
5Ltr Antibloom Thinner - for use with the primer

2.5Ltr BSB Basecoat Car Colour
5Ltr 00 741 Medium Thinner for use with the base coat
1Ltr 20:85 1K Acrylic"Smart Clear"

I\'m pretty OK with all the ancilliaries and stuff, it\'s mainly the quantities I\'m curious about.

However, if anyone has any hints and tips, I\'d be most grateful!

Cheers

OJ

You are best of asking at the place you buy from, diffrent manufactures Products have diffrent opacity so if you use real good stuff you may cover it in alot less than if you use Cheap paint.

We call it faulse Econamy, It may look cheaper but you end up with more Solvent about so you don\'t get as good finish.

If you don\'t mind me asking why would you want to use Cellulose? I know its cheap but did\'nt they paint the Arc in that stuff?

If he does want to spray it himself and he doesn\'t have a booth, it\'ll be not a very brilliant idea to spray 2k...

Sorry if this is a hijack but what was the car painted in originally? Somebody has scratched my drivers door and need to get it sorted. Been given a good quote of a workmates dad (who owns a bodyshop) but would only use celli.

Cheers

??? what and its a good idea to use Cellulose ?? Out doors and Cellulose is so wrong, well its just wrong.

TBH I would not recomend painting anything out side a Booth. Sorry keep bringing it back up... CELLULOSE!!!!! can you even still buy it?, Of the differnt paint i\'ve used over the years its the Biggest Pain in the rear.

I admit Any clear would be a Knightmare to apply out side a booth mainly becouse of Flys and stuff landing in it whilst you are mid coat. Add to that the speed 1k goes off you would be hard pushed to get a nice finish before it gets covered in overspray :yes

?????? That realy Confuses me, i know alot of painters and Bodyshops and not only would none of them use Cellulose but would rather drink Thinners. I think alot of people Understimate 2K, for a start Its not going to Kill you in seconds!! Its isocyanate not cyanide as every one seems to think, i know there is some nasty stuff in the Hardner but the Cellulose v\'s 2K debate, We have Lung capacity tests very Often becouse all Paint,Filler etc gives you Ashma over time and it can get VERY bad. Put it this way there are more old guys with Bad lungs that used Cellulose in the Good old days than people that have been affected by the 2K.

LOL

Cellulose is just Poor, All cars are Painted in 2k and have been for years so what chance have you got of getting the same finnish with some thing that goes 100% flat and has to be Polished weekly during summer.

This is where i tend to get my Stuff from for odd jobs //www.bodyshopwarehouse.co.uk

I am a Bit old school so i some times like to use Solvent just to remind myself how hard it is to prep a car then spray neat Thinners onto it.

BTW RM/Glasurit Solvent is the best no question, i work for Speis Hecker that is not bad (back up\'s realy good ;)) and if i wanted something cheap that gave a good finish i\'d look at Sikens.

At least you stand more Chance of it matching, the easy way of getting a spot on match would be to Spot repair the Scratch then base just that area and flick it in then Clear the door, then you can 100% garantee it will match the 1/4 and Wing.

Ahhhhhhh why an i thinking of work in my chill out time :(

Hey Al - are you my RX7 DIY-Angel or something??? *grin*  I couldn\'t find anywhere that could mix the paint within driving distance, and given the hours I work during the week, I figured my best solution would be to find it online...  It\'s not the same as face to face contact and advice, but there you go.  But it could be a very useful place to know - where be it???

Griz - I don\'t know the reason I\'ve been recommended the cellulose - the site I\'ve been talking to are //www.paints4u.com.  i don\'t know how good they are, but they are personable on the phone and email, and have been very helpful about stuff (no other site I contacted even replied!!).  basically, I dropped them a mail saying I\'m a novice, and that I don\'t have breathing aparatus stuff so 2k was out and my knowledge is so basic that I don\'t even know what I don\'t know (if you know what I mean), and told them what I wanted to do (paint the car in my garage), and the colour (it\'s still gonna be a mazda colour).  That was what they came back with...

So Big-G, (this is where I sneakily steal knowledge...  watch and learn) if hypothetically you were, say, a good looking, witty, novice car painter and DIY\'er who had only turned on his compressor to see what noise it made, and to blow dust off stuff, and you were looking to, say, paint an S3 RX-7, how would you go about it, given you have a SIP 50L compressor, a reasonably large garage, and next week off work to spend playing with the car (the car doesn\'t have to be painted by the end of next week, it\'s just that I - sorry the hypothetical you had to take time off work or lose it so you decided to spend time on your little project).

Ok, Breathing gear, Buy one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3M-BODYSHOP-RESPIRATOR-SPRAYING-SANDING-DUST-MASK-PPE_W0QQitemZ160089926990QQihZ006QQcategoryZ30923QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I would guess your Biggest Problem would be the Equipment side of things, you would need a Decent Compressor to keep up with a Good quality Spray gun. I Use Devilbiss and Sata Guns and they Sap some CFM, Also before its brought up don\'t listen to all the C**p about HVLP being the way to go High volume low pressure and all. They would really be the wrong way to go for you as they need Big CFM compressors, you want a Compliant gun like a Devilbis GTI.

"(no other site I contacted even replied!!)"

Well you know why don\'t you, there not going to tell you to Brake the Law over the Internet?? you can get royally F**K\'d if the Environmental health catch you (i seem to remember its a 5k fine but i think that\'s Commercial) and imagen what would happen if the Environmental people contacted them as some one wanting to paint a car in there Shed? No Filters or no compliance to EPA rules? i think some one would not be happy. So that\'s why allot of sites say for professional use only.

Urm they don\'t seem to be in the car industry? I\'ve just spent the last few minutes looking at there Site and there is nothing to sugest they know what they are talking about? They are not backed (i.e Distribute a big name brand) they don\'t sell Proper Guns (who are Badger and Kestrel?)

I think you have been Missinformed, i sugest you Buy 1/4lt of Cellulose and the same of 2k and try them on test Panels, I now would not use ither as i\'m a bit spoilt (I use water base) but that would not be cost effective and even though it is realy good for doing wings and bits like that i could imagen it could go wrong in a big way (so forget water).

Biggest thing, Don\'t belive the Hype about 2K, It won\'t kill you LOL infact the Basecote is a bit like Cellulose. Worsed that could happen is you forget to put hardner in it ;) (btw with 2K getting the correct hardner is the key)

Seriously try contacting these people //www.bodyshopwarehouse.co.uk i have used them before and there Very good.

Cheers for the replies dude!  I did say to everyone I contacted that I wanted the cellulose stuff, not 2k, and didn\'t get a reply...

I\'ll certainly get a quantity of 2k and cellulose and have a go - the underside of the bonnet is going to be the likely victim... *grin*  I\'ve already got a top respirator, but the possibility of getting a different compressor is not really possible - knowing me, and my lack of patience, I might do one panel, and then decide I can\'t be arsed, and get someone else to do it!! *lol*

Grizzly - thanks for your replies dude!  it really helps to get some advice from someone that knows what they are talking about!

I\'m sure lots of people will tell you this but its all in the Prep, Take your time and  don\'t be shy about repriming etc if you are not 100% happy with it.

You won\'t have done it Properly if you still have Fingure prints at the end ;)
