Title: Removing butterflies tomorrow
Post by: McCARTHY on February 26, 2007, 09:49:30 AM
Hey people, getting rid of these non-essentials tomorrow aswell as striping the unwanted interior out...

With the butterflies just wanted to check "whip them out" and plug up the hole. Is there anything else to do? Have read a couple of posts about it on here. I\'ll get some pics up in the process

I think there\'s a vac port to block too. Are you removing the solenoid? I used a blanking plate to cover the hole.

the solenoid? Just tidies the rats nest up a bit. I did it because I was going single at the same time so my rats nest is completely gone. Are you running a PFC? You\'ll get an error on the standard ECU if you remove any solenoids, the PFC doesn\'t care.

no this is an FD I\'v just decided to start modding from stock so i can show and see the gains from each bit added. However in the long run i will not be using the PFC i will be going AEM

Right enough. You\'ll want to leave the solenoid in then until you get your AEM.

I really should know this by now, but what advantages/disadvantages would this mod bring?

frees up the airflow through the throttle body and UIM. I\'ve been told it\'s not worth doing unless you\'ve gone single but I guess McCarthy will report back on whether that\'s true or not. Disadvantage is you don\'t have the throttle limiting effect of the butterflies when the engine\'s cold. You could, if an idiot, give it full beans on a stone cold engine.

Are you going to port your UIM to, might as well while your doing it.

Its pretty easy to port the UIM I removed the butterflies, then got a jig saw in took the bulk of the centre out, put the gasket on and drew a line as a template the used a small andgle grinder disk to work the metal away to the lines then cleaned it up with a die grinder.

Well it will aid air flow thats the reason for doing it. As far as i\'m concerned the smooth the air flows the better. For example the other easy thing i\'m doing too is removing the stock air filter rubber flexy tubey bits because they are all bumpy and notchy with this you loose air flow. They will be replaced with shiney Alloy pipes instead.

What these butterflies also do is control throttle limiting when the car is cold.... but as said before if your dappy enough to put the hammer down when cold then its your own fault

mikeyh - It\'s not the butterflies you can see when you take the elbow off. There\'s a second set behind these. They\'re the ones we\'re talking about.
