Title: Oh wotsits!I\'ve had an accident!
Post by: nikp on December 31, 2003, 01:42:16 PM
Hi chaps. Tis me again!

I thought I\'d take my girlfriends brother out for a spin in the RX7 today, as we were visiting her parents in Essex for new years.

It was wet, and even though I wasn\'t going at all fast I obviously put my foot down too early going round a corner! Result: Fish tailing rear end with us as more or less passengers. We ended up hitting an embarkment of earth. This broker the underside of the front bumber (Fortunately the actual bumber is fine) broke one of the fitting points of the front left fog light, but worst of all it appears to have pierced the radiator. Oh poo! Ok, ok, I deserve all I get, etc, etc. I have learned my lesson!

But the basic question is, how much is a new radiator gonna end up costing me? Or, alternatively, what are the chances of anyone knowing a place that does second hand ones in the essex area? Does anyone have a spare one? I\'m a member of the AA, so I can get home to bristol with the car if need be!

Any help out there would be appreciated! (And I know I\'m a dork for letting that happen - I\'m gutted!! :( )

I have used ones in stock. Also check anti-roll bar mounts, they bend real easy.

DRAGON, you have PM.

Alternatively, how much are you looking for for a radiator?

Cheers!

Sorry to hear bout your accident - glad the damage isnt to bad - Just had a moment myself; Overtaking a couple of cars I had to nip back in due to traffic jerked the steering wheel too much straightening up and l just managed to lift off before the backend went - at 80 this would have done me no good at all.

Cheers Dave.

I\'m sure it\'ll be alright, damage doesn\'t appear too bad. It\'s just the inconvenience of the broken radiator really!

Unlucky mate :(

Just as a suggestion, have you thought about getting an aftermarket one at all? Nice fluidline *dribble* one here (http://66.216.67.51/product.asp?0=352&1=354&3=686)  for $435 + shipping... I know what I\'d do ;)

Any one got a Fluidyne or Koyo rad?

I\'ve heard a few things about them, none particularly great?

Cheap though!

seem to rate them on the US forums from what I\'ve read, the Koyos and Fluidline are more or less the same thing though...best thing about the fluidline is they do slot right in on the standard mounts which is handy... though the Koyo\'s have larger cores but are a bit of a bugger to fit

Well, an update on the situation: I tried some rad weld on the radiator, and the result wasn\'t quite what I had hoped for! No improvement on the leak(s)! It\'s better described as a sieve now, than a radiator!

Fortunately, I made a phone call to the AA and they\'ll take us back to Bristol on a flat bed truck. From there I can organise the repair operation! I\'m only looking for a direct replacement at the time being. Just wanna get it back together and working like it was for as little cost as possible.

This event has brought forward my intended purchase of a veilside front bumper to as soon as possible (Although the bumber is more or less of, it has suffered slightly, but will be aceptable until I get the replacement sorted!)

Hmm, also read that some yanks dont like em at all.

Might try getting one made up here like Steve did and see how it goes, he had good results. Or may be some thing by Griffin? Any one else specific worth considering for a mod\'d cFDs rad? I know Serck are big here but I know a couple of people who\'ve been f#cked about by them too...

Well, here\'s an update on the radiator side of things: My girlfriends dad has removed the radiator for me, and says it looks fine! The rad that\'s been bent is the engine oil radiator. There\'s was no oil being leaked after the accident, but there was difinately water leaking from it! I don\'t understand what has broken! Water was dripping out at quite a rate! The radiator is going to get pressure tested (Hopefully today), and depending upon whether it is ok or not, I shall be very confused!

If there\'s no problems with the radiator, what on earth could be leaking water from the front area of the car!?

Hi Nik,

Is the water leak coming from the O/S [ drivers side ]
of the car if so it could be the water overflow tank leaking failing that was it the washer bottle maybe from thje N/S,  both tanks are behind the Oil Rads hideing behind the plastic inner mud guards

Hope this helps.

It turns out that although the rad looks ok, it is actually split. I have found one for a very good price (Thanks Dragon!), and shall be picking it up tomorrow to fit at the weekend.

Ok, I have fitted my replacement radiator, stuck coolant flush in there, and am almost ready to drain the system ready for some new distilled water and coolant. Just one question: Considering the water temp gauge is dreadfully unreliable at giving a reliable indication of the water temperature, how can I test that the cooling fans are still working as they should? It\'s not that they were damaged or anything, but when the car was sat there idling to make use of the coolant flush, the fans never came on, and yet the engine oil temp went quite high (But not really high!!).

Should I be concerned, or not? Or is it just that it needs to be sat there for a long time? Or is it just that I\'m being paranoid!!!? :D

Only way yer gonna get a decent reading for ya water is if you\'ve got an aftermarket water gauge. My fans hardly ever come on so wouldn\'t worry about that... gotta be real hot for it to do that... heard them in traffic in the summer ;)

As for the gauge, Defi do some nice digital ones which will give ya a good reading

best of luck
