Title: Any Good?
Post by: croig on February 24, 2007, 06:47:33 PM
Hi there!
Firstly like to say what a helpfull site this is, been scanning it for months now.

Basically im looking for my 1st rex (or i wouldnt be here!) and viewed one today.

Looked real nice, good paint work, a couple of \'trolly dints\' only been in the country since late december, had full engine overhaul by Jimmy\'s and a turbo refurb in Jan, N reg and 95k km.

I think it was a fair (?) asking pice at under £7k.
However i was a little dissapointed at the interior, seemed really cheap and plasticy and it looked well used! is this normal?
Does this seem about going price?

Any help and thorts wouyld be much appriciated.

Thanks
Craig :)

95 with rebuild for under £7k yeah i would say thats good, just ring around a couple of bodyshops or theres even companys out there that drive to your house and pull out all the dent for a fixed price as ask how much it will cost, but i think on onto a winner there.

Neil

Ps the interiors arent that good, but by japanese sports car standards of this age there pretty good.

I\'d say from what I\'ve seen on here the price is probably decent[1] but not spectacular. Depending on what spec you\'re after, you can probably save yourself a grand or three...

I\'m with Neil regarding calling in one of those paintless dent removal guys if/when you decide to get a car as they can do a very good job...

[1] I\'m paying slightly above 7k for a car with a fresh rebuild and about 1.3ks worth of uprated parts.

Thanks for the words of wisdom guys!

One more thing tho, can you tell what model is what by the interiors?  Only asking because the one i looked at had a mini cubby hole thing (almost like a deepish change holder, with a hinged lid over it {Very wobbly lid!}) on the central divider, behind the gear stick. I have not seen these in the other rex\'s i have looked at.

Il try to get a pic up of what i mean.

The ones i have seen dont have this. Any idea if this points to exactly what model it is? The car itself is badged as an Efini, but the owner at the moment does not know.

Cheers

I don\'t think the interior will help distinguish the modes and

I think the you\'ll find  \'cubby hole thing\' is an alternative to ther being an ash tray there.

I wouldn\'t worry too much about the interior you can do things with it

To say these cars are getting on for 15 years old i think the interiors have aged really well compared to other cars.  Everything is curved inside and not square like inside skylines or hondas. They are basic inside but that\'s why its called a pure sports car. The interiors can be spruced up to look real nice so thats no big deal really. The easiest way to tell what model it is, is to look inside both front vents on the bumper. If there is an oil cooler behind each vent it stands a good chance of being an TypeR R2 but there might be more to it than that. Look here for the model differences http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=394

For 6K you could get a seriously nice, modified, fast freshly rebuilt RX7.  There are some being sold on here.  RE:Worx are selling or recently sold a single turbo one, and single tubs are the last word mate.

SO don\'t rush into it, if anything 7K is too much, don\'t look to spend more than 6K !

Post by: croig on February 27, 2007, 05:23:47 PM
Well like i said this one i went to see was only rebuilt in jan with turbo refurbs by Jimmy\'s and had a blitz \'zorst and BOV.

To be honest im not looking to get a much more modified than that! The only thing is that the interior looked tatty, but other than that i really liked it :)

I have been scanning around on here for a bit but the cars i like are already sold! dammit!

Thanks for the advice strange_days! So realistically not look to spend any more than £6k?

The  one i saw was just under £7k, plus my car trading in another £2k on top of that, plus hope to get the price down a bit!

Just missed out dude http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33201&page=2

But it goes to show what you can get

6K will buy you an awesome RX7, I wouldn\'t spend any more if it was me

Without being a complete newbie, i know the engines are completely different, but should they sound lawnmower-esque? Not majorly, but sound a little rattley?

Lol this is really hard to type what sound i mean!
Title: Any Good?
Post by: Grizzly on February 27, 2007, 09:21:02 PM
? Far from it, A rotary has no Valves etc so there is No cam noise i.e. Not rattley. As for LawnMower? Have you herd an FD? They have there own sound (bit like a Strait 6 i supose??)

Well yes because i went to see one at the weekend. Could have been cause the engine was cold? Just sounded like ticking i suppose? I found a vid on youtube that had the same sound on idle with the bonnet up so feel a bit better.

Cant be major though as it had a rebuild about a month ago...

Post by: croig on February 27, 2007, 09:32:23 PM
Thanks for that grizzly, it did sound exactly like that at the exhaust end so :).

Just suppose it was because it was the 1st rotary ive ever heard in the flesh so doesnt register as sounding normal under the bonnet, if u catch my drift.

What is a screamer pipe? Ive seen them mentioned a few times in Jap Performance and the like.
Title: Any Good?
Post by: Grizzly on February 28, 2007, 06:03:05 PM
Well on most Single Turbo kits they have an External Waste gate, basicly they usaly are plumbed back into the Exhaust but a Screamer Pipe vents the Exhaust gasses from the waste gate into the Atmosphere ;)

Note on the Pic there is the Down pipe (the large one coming off the Turbo) and below it there is a Smaller pipe running parallel (Thats a Screamer Pipe)

So does it sound like a mega loud BOV?

Anyways going for a second look at that rex this weekend and a test drive, then time to make that million pound descision and jump head first into the jap world...!

Got a decent insurance quote, the only thing is if im going to fit it on the drive with my old mans fto in the way :P
Title: Any Good?

Not quite BOV sound, more of a Jet fighter taking off ;)

The best advice i could give you being an Owner myself would be 1. Make sure you get a Compression test done by some one that knows what there doing 2. Get some one that has owned an FD to drive it for you.

A Bad Fd Handles like a Good Ford, a Good FD drives like no other car and will put a grin on your face every time you drive it :)

Nice!

Well with a reciept of proof that Jimmys rebuilt the engine and refurbed the turbos in Jan, im guessing the compressions will be about right, if not spot on.
I dont know anyone thats owned an FD before so that might be a bit hard, unless anyone on here is willing to give up an hour or so tomorrow mid morning that lives around the Chatteris/ Cambridge / Peterboro area?

Basically im going to be looking for smoothness of the acceleration/turbos, cold and warm engine starting, make sure no leaks etc and general stuff like that. Is there anything in specific i should really watch out for or look for?

Thanks for your on going help Grizzly :)

There is a reason you should get it Comp tested, Not saying anyone is Dodgy here but it has been known in the Past for cars to have "Had an engine rebuild" but Not!! Its a well known fact a car that\'s been rebuilt will sell quicker and Demand more money, so the more Unscrupulous people out there have been known to tell you its had one to make you think your getting a deal. SO.... That\'s why every one will tell you to Get it Comp tested.

But as i say not every one is like this (I have a Paranoid Nature) so if there is a Receipt that says for example Jimmys rebuilt it i\'d be phoning them up to find out details (Was it done?, Why was it done? and Is there any Warantee left on it?) This ways a Bit fool proof, but imagen if a Good Car dealer with a good back ground buys a car on face value then sells it on to you?

When you think about it your gambling a £3-4k Engine rebuild so you want to know all there is to know just so you don\'t end up with a Blown motor and the guy who was suposed to have done the Build saying he has no record?

what too look for, there is lots on this subject but i like to take it through the Rev range making sure both Turbo\'s spool up ok, Listen for Clunks and Whiney box\'s/Diffs whilst driving. But as i said before Its the Bushes and Suspension etc you need to pay attention to (its expencive to put right and will spoil the drive)

Its also good to check how its been looked after, Condition of Rear tyres etc. Any mods? If you have too many Mods (Decat and Big Exhaust is the main one that springs to mind) on a stock ECU it could be a Time bomb even if its had a Rebuild.

The rest is common sence, Making sure every thing Works and Oil is Clean (this should be changed Often so should be in good condition) Anti freeze is there and the levels are good, Genral stuff like that.

Ok il be really looking for them then.

Just out of interest, how much roughly would i be looking at for a general service, rolling road set up at a rotary specialist/jap specialist?

WOW!!! I completely see what you mean Grizzly!! It was nothing else i have ever driven!! Such a precise machine! Steering was tight and exact, handleing was insane and no nocks or squeaks or anything.... So... here i am the latest member to the Rex crew  :Thumbsup!!!

Pick her up next weekend :D :D :D ! I really cannot wait!!

Theres just a couple of issues however...
1) worried about what alarm to get and where to get it, ive read the stories :eek

2)The rev counter didnt work most of the time - it \'danced\' all over the place, is this expensive/ difficult to rectify?

Anyways, cant wait for a club meet to show her off :Thumbs-up

I\'d put a Thread on the Main 3rd gen board about the faults, TBH i\'ve not had any of those Issues.

BUT!! I do have a Clifford Alarm and it tends to drive me mad (Wants Turning down a bit) Its goes off in High wind and heavy rain :( So its great at 3am.

New treads startrd in the tech section about the alarm and rev counter then.

Well thanks again for all the help in helping me to choose the right FD guys!  I\'ll get some pics up of her next weekend:cheers
