Title: Under bonnet whistling
Post by: Ed_RX7 on December 30, 2003, 05:44:11 PM
Just had a front mount done not long ago and Keep getting a really annoying whistling noise goming from the filters (hks).

Its driving me crazy..........hoses seem ok.

Anybody had problems like this before?

When does it whistle?  Is it only on full boost, or all the time?

It doesnt even have to be on full boost. literally any time i put me foot down. even stationary as soon as the revs go past 2k I can hear it

You could try briefly running without the filters to confirm that\'s where it\'s coming from.

sounds like a boost leak, i had a whistling noise when hitting positive boost, once the leak was found no more whistling

have you always had these filters? If not could it just be the new induction noise?

Could you unhook the boost inlet pipe from the intercooler and rev it? if it stops it could be the boost pipes leaking somewhere but I\'m not sure how the engine would like having an open boost circuit when reving?

Maybe get the Boost circuit pressure tested, if it is leaking you should hear the sound again?

Blitz,

Could it be a boost leak even though I have no problems with my boost patterns and readings?

Dave,

No have had these filters for a while but had to modify the piping when I had the fmic fitted.......Think this is when it all started.

Yeah like dave says it could be your induction roar on initial boost up low down in the revs. Have you got the old original OE airbox and pipe work still? If so you could try putting that on to see if the noise stops. If the whistle still persists, then i\'d say it could be a boost leek or a noisy turbo.

Regards, Wav:)

yes it can be, as the wastegate will compensate a little and cause the turbos to overspeed to make up for the lost boost, all depends on the size of the boost leak, check the rubber coupling directly coming off the the turbo pack outlet, you will need to take it off completley to inspect properly, also check the silicon pipe connectors of your new Intercooler pipes see iff the jubilee clips are fastened properly.

Does sound like a boost leak to me.  When I had a knackered BOV it sounded like a dying cat whenever your pressed the throttle down
