Title: How often should you get your engine rebuilt?

After how many miles is it best to get your engine rebuilt?
Title: Is this a trick question?

Surely when your engine needs a rebuild?

Engine life is largely dependant on how the car has been looked after, the drivers style and the sort of modifications it has had applied to it.

I would say there are NO hard and fast rules.  Engines can go very early in their lives or may go beyond 100,000 miles.

If the engine has been rebuilt, the added factor of when it was rebuilt and who rebuilt it, needs to be taken into account.  Some tuners will use only new parts and some may reuse significant bits.

As an indication, a compression test may give a sign of engine wear.  However why rebuild if the car is running fine (unless you have deep pockets and just want a full rebuild).

Totally depends on the condition of the engine, I don\'t think there\'s a specific mileage at which all engines need rebuilding, usual quoted figure is around 60k. Mine has got to 70k+ miles and I\'m swapping mine out as I don\'t want it blowing when I up the boost or anything.

you rebuild your engine when the compression gets low and it becomes hard to start...or if a water seal fails or if it blows a seal.
Theres no set mileage for any of them to occur. You need to do a bit more reading up on rx7s and the engine to understand why  they need rebuilds and what the modes of failures are. just be warned they are very expensive cars to keep right....

The water seals went on mine 21K after a rebuild which had been done while in the care of the previous owner. As I understand it 2nd hand housings and other bits were used to keep the costs down, so as above the quality of the work and the newness of the bits can be a factor. I\'d only put 1000 miles on it at most before it properly let go. Sometimes you can just be damn unlucky too.

Carl is rebuilding my engine now with new housings etc. uprated apex seals and a mild street port so I\'m hoping it\'ll outlast the previous effort :D
