Title: SVA - is there a way around it???
Post by: ferruh on February 21, 2007, 11:54:26 AM
Just bought a 1999 Type R from Japan for a mate.

Worried that it wont pass the SVA as the FD is heavily modified.

Does anyone know if the car can be registered without the SVA and by just getting a MOT?? Maybe getting it registered as something else kit car maybe??

I heard people registering 1998 EVO5\'s, 1998 Skylines etc without SVA. How is this possible.

Any info would be much appreciated...
Thanks

the SVA isn\'t your problem, it\'s the model report. There isn\'t one currently for the late model RX7s so unless you can find a way round it the car wouldn\'t be road legal for 2 years (in 2009 it would be 10 years old and then you\'d be fine). Skylines have a model report as the R33 & R34 were sold here in small numbers. Not sure on the Evo V though

You will not be able to register the car here in the UK as there is no model report which is a definite requirement for the single vehicle approval (sva).

The only way I can think of would be to undo every nut and bolt and then put everything back together then and then you will be able to register as a self built kit car - mean\'s it technicially wont be an RX-7 then though!

SVA does not require a model report as the name suggests (Single Vehicle approval) you can make a one off car and have it checked and registered. My understanding is that imports now require ESVA which needs a model report and is designed to check that the none EU spec car meets all the E spec requirements

Is that not the same thing but with EC approval.

Think is, as Mike says, you will need a model report - if there was a way round it then i\'m sure you would see more later cars such as the Spirit as others would use a loophole if there was one?

Long gone those days. I have heard of some other ways of being able to register but need to do a bit more research.

Those rear storage bins would be ideal for his and hers matching sinks that seem to be all the fashion at the minute :D

I guess I will be waiting a loooooong time before we can get the car registered. Well if this loophole really exists then how come noone knows about it??

This guy I know got his Evo5 which had some serious mods to the engine and a full massive enormous ... Veilside bodykit, I was told that it was a demo car, registered on R plates so what I understand is that this evo must have model report and then if any car has a model report like this, then you can get it registered no matter how heavily modified it is. am I right?

...If i cant find that loophole then I am in serious SH*** as I told the customer that I can get the car registered when I was buying the car for him from Japan Auction/Dealer.....

:(((

Considering the number of people looking to do this I think if it could be done someone would have done it before now.

Serious **** maybe but if it\'s heavily modded and it\'s quality bits on it then chances are the car will be worth more in pieces to the vultures on this site than it is in one piece. There\'s always a silver lining :)

This loophole has ended.

There have been allsorts from camper vans to registering the car as a hearse.

Even having a model report present does not mean it will be OK if the car is heavily modded.

i have imported loads of cars in my time, but i stick to the ones 10 years old. I heard something about by-passing an sva, but no sure....here goes...
take it to ireland first, register it there, and then bring it over as an irish car and re-register it here! my end up costing as im nit sure what irish tax\'s are like, but that could be a possibility?

p.s i thought sva looks only at performance mods as opposed to asthetic ones???

A friend of mine recently bought a ex top secret R34 skyline at auction and had loads of trouble with getting a ESVA. I think this was due to it being heavily modified. It took about 8 months to get it all sorted and registered but i remember him saying that it was because he had to take it to ireland and get it registered there! Didn\'t really think any thing of it at the time. So sounds like there is a way round it somehow?
He\'s out of the country till monday, i\'ll try and get the exact details of what he did and why for you!

Isn\'t there an ESVA loophole for left-hand-drive? How about sticking another steering wheel on the left with a rubber band around the existing steering wheel.

For the desperate, is it actually possible to convert to LHD temporarily? The LHD parts should be available in the US.

Otherwise, get it armour plated :)
Title: ESVA and model reports - what are the limits?
Post by: jpc on March 09, 2007, 09:29:53 AM
I understand from various websites/posts that RX7 model reports are not yet possible due to failing the emissions test. Does anybody know what the emission limits are for a model report? I don\'t need one myself but I noticed my last MOT test had a particularly low level. It might be of use to somebody trying to get a model report.

CO - 0.01% (limit 3.5%)
HC - 11ppm (1200ppm)

The car was MOT\'d as a 2000 RX7 (unmodified) which I guess is an up-to-date test.

JPC.

Well, the problem with that is that AFAIK the limits you quote above are for a pre-cat test. Mine\'s just passed this test with 0% CO and 1ppm HC :) but then again I\'ve got a brand-new cat in mine.

Should be no problem if you run a cat.  My last test got 0% co and just over 30 HC\'s.

Wonder what people get with a sport\'s cat and a PFC?

the loop hole in ireland has all change, there cars now need the same tests done to pass a imported car, found this out today when looking into it, been offered a highly modded drift 350z with a turbo and supercharger :D nothing standard and would never pass a esva test... bugger..

Nigel from RXHeaven Portsmouth is currently working on a report for standard spec newmodels....may well be ready this year...I posted about this back last year...

"you have to have a "model" template (ie documented standard spec for vehicle) for any car coming after 1st Jan 1997.Costs approx £250 to "rent" where they have been written.

Issues with RX 7 (post 97)
1. apparently, no "model" has been written for the car
2. Even if it had been, the spec would not come up to UK sva/esva spec (things like cat 1 immobilisers and airbags ?)

3. Even if you then rectified those problems, you wouldn\'t then adhere to "model" (so a new individual one is required ???) AND you need to make sure no other items have been modified....

Your best bet will be to speak to Nigel, I suggest.
Cheers

Steve

it depends really, theres  things that they let you away with, i argued like a mo fo when i did a celica i had, got away with a full race exhaust, race suspension, body kit, front and rear strut bars, after market alloys and a c-one undertray, cpu and filter.. theres no easy way round it, they can be total feckers and there nout you can do but comply... they fail a car i did for the wheels poking 1mm outside of the arch.. grr
