Hi guys
The back box on my import FD is on the way out, so I\'m looking into getting a nice shiny replacement. Thing is, I\'d like to get a more fruity exhaust note but not go too loud - my old scooby with an Afterburner was deafening - I\'d like to still be able to hear the stereo in my rex :)
So, does anyone have any suggestions on a good one to go for? I assume the jap-spec ECU will be ok with this mod too?
Cheers,
Alex
Alex you best option would be to get yourself something like an HKS or Apexi box. That way you could always put the bung in the back for those days of silence. ;)
Dan
Cheers Dan, didn\'t think of that!
Can anyone clarify the differences between the HKS models? I\'ve never been sure!
Thanks,
Alex
Avoid HKS if you can, I think a couple of guy on here were not impressed with the quality of them.
Blitz, Apexi have good names for an exaust.
Some people have found that some of the HKS systems rust on the weld joints. I found this on my dragger version i had on my MR2. I had the blitz on my old RX7. Sounded cool....but was loud, especially with the cat ditched :) but build quality was excellent. I like the Apexi units but these cost a bit more than the blitz ones.
Oh....if you are wanting an exhaust let me know which one as i may me able to get it a little cheaper :)
Cheers
Adam
Best thing to do is see and hear as many exhausts as you can. My experience is that:
a) HKS cans fall apart so I wouldnt have another
b) the Apexi cans are built really good, though some can be loud.
c) Blitz cans seem well built but the Nurspec is loud too
d) Feed sound good (nice burble rather than noise) and are built really good
Largely down to personal preference i.e. 95% about how loud you want!
How do u know what sort u have - i.e is it written somewhere - sorry for the highjack!
Cheers for all the advice guys! I\'d almost decided on a NUR Spec, cos I think you can get a bung for them... Feed sounds interesting though, I\'ll have to check them out too :)
Adam, cheers for the info, I\'ll let you know when I come to a decision! :)
Thanks,
Alex
blitz is the daddy IMO both on quality & noise/sound. Unless it\'s different on different models thou only the blitz Nurspec type R, ie centre & backbox, comes with the bung. Luved it on me scoob thou & praise the bung else big eared (http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/contrib/anym/bigear.gif) neighbours wood of had me lynched (http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/contrib/anym/hanged.gif) lol
Si
i have a kakimoto which seems quite good, quite loud though
Cheers Si, wasn\'t sure of the bung situation re: the Blitz stuff:)
Anyone know who sells FEED stuff or what their website is? Done a bit of looking around and havn\'t come up with anything :(
Saw some Racing Beat kit on a US site that looks pretty nice, dunno if it can be bought over here though...
Mine is very large and sounds awesome - also has a bung, i would tell u what it is but i\'m not sure myself!

What do you want from the exhaust sound- and performance- wise?
These 2 factors will dictate to some degree what you choose from. If you are intending to maintain a \'standard\' car i.e. stock twin turbos, I dont really think it matters that much, depending on what exhaust mods u have already of course.
If you are going single turbo at some point and will consequently be able to rely on a big external wastegate to control boost adequately then you may as well get as best a flowing system as you can. IMO this means either Apexi N1 or GT-spec or one of the Feed items (forget which) as these are built largely from mandrel bent 80mm pipe, there arent many others who can say this. I think the GT-spec was the only 80mm system for a while in fact. Having run an Apexi N1 and 2 HKS Super Dragers (in the brief time before they both rotted out!) back to back the difference is huge; the HKS flows nothing like the gas the Apexi system does...
I imagine the other real rotary outfits e.g. RE-A, R-Magic, Knightsports etc also build excellent systems (no personal experience of these though, yet!) and you can hopefully be assured that they are built to a standard that will last on a turbo rotary, unlike HKS systems!!
The Feed exhaust is called a Feed Sonic SR, only a few around though (me & Phil G I think), but they are good!
ReWorx got hold of them for us, so should be able to get some more if there is demand, likewise I am sure they can get Apexi units.
Regards
Max
Thanks for your input guys!
I\'m not really planning on modding the car that much, I did a few mods to my old scooby which was fun but ultimately too expensive to be worth it :(
So, as much as I\'d love a ported, single turbo 450 bhp monster, probably I\'ll just stick with air filter, exhaust etc to give a modest increase in power without breaking the bank!
Max, cheers for the FEED lead ;) I\'ll give ReWorx a call!
Oh, gman, no spoiler is deffo the way to go! I always thought the type r spoiler looked a bit \'stuck on\' (which it obviously is, but you know what I mean!)
Cheers,
Alex
BTW, Happy New Year to all you rotary peeps!!
:)

Geff may have a Sonic in stock. I\'m sure he has an Apexi GT-spec.
Neither are cheap though, £500-600 at a guess??
ouch:(
well, a NUR Spec R will be around the 400 mark, so the real question is whether it\'d be worth spending the extra for the Feed...
although dont forget the new ECU if yer decatting (http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/ups/trixie/winksmile.gif)
Si
Si,
I take it then that the systems like the NUR Spec R replace the second cat in the centre section? I\'m basing this assumption on what\'s under a scoob though, FDs could be different... I could go outside and look but it\'s dark and raining :(
I was hoping to avoid fitting a PFC just yet! Presumably if I just replace the back box the ECU can cope with that?
yeah i was too but i believe the RX7 cat is just in the centre section & so replacing that wood need uprated ECU the general consensus seems to be yer OK with induction & backbox on standard ECU but any more & it should really be next on the list! (http://smilies.crowd9.com/ups/dvx_rune/smooch.gif)
Si
The Blitz Nur spec is a cat back system. It does not replace the main Cat. You are right in thinking though that if the cat is replaced with a straight through pipe you will need a ECU upgrade.
Adam
not to be confused with the nurspec "R" thou (http://mindscraps.com/s/contrib/corky/smilies8.gif)
Si
Doh! missed the \'R\' lol this does replace the cat, not sure if it\'s a straight through though, would like to find that out.
Adam
Hmm, interesting about the position of the cat... I suppose the high exhaust temps in an FD mean it\'ll work that far down the exhaust.
From seeing pics it does look like the spec R is straight thru - but one thing that I\'d like confirmed is the material the piping is made from. I know the can is stainless, but I\'ve got a feeling the pipe is aluminised steel - seems a bit of a cop-out by jap manufacturers not to use stainless exclusively, expecially considering the cost!
hmm i maybe wrong it occasionally happens but me spec R on scoob was all stainless that\'s why i liked it so as it was all quality (http://mysmilies.creativesell.net/cwm/cwm3d/3dbiggrin3.gif)
Si
The Nur spec is stainless from the cat back on the rx7.....well it was on mine when i fitted it :)
Excellent, cheers for the confirmation guys!
:)
Well, it looks like I\'ve made my decision! :)
I\'ve been offered a good price for a Mazdaspeed back box (don\'t know the model) from a crash-damaged car, so especially considering the after christmas cash shortage that looks to be the way to go! :D
The ones I\'ve seen are well made. Generally not that loud either. My car had the full MS split system on it (DP-MP-CB) when it arrived from Japan originally.
I\'m not sure all their cans flow as much as some other systems but they cant be that bad, dont think any of the MS stuff is rubbish so you probably got yerself a deal...
Nice one.
Cheers mate. It does look nicely built, I\'ll let you know how I get on once it\'s fitted (probably next weekend). :D
Alex
id really like just a backbox for mine, not to loud though, preferably so it\'s near quiet when idling in the mornings.
how much are backbox\'s on there own generally?
has anyone fitted a ksp? if so is it any good ? want a nice exhaust myself that will give extra umff not worried about my neighbours sod them :)
also which is the better induction kit and the nicest looking too ? ta
Bad news :(
On inspection the pipe-work was damaged in the crash that wrote the car off, so my Mazdaspeed is no more :(
Looks like it\'ll be a Racing Beat from RX Motors or Rotechnics - good news for you guys! :)
Shaq has teh mazdaspeed exhaust and its the best Ive heard on an FD. Its suits the FD well I think. I\'ll find pics...
In response to the question of price - I just had a stainless back pipe and box built, stainless weld and fixing, for £200. The parts were Powerflow I think, and all free flowing. Power definitely seems up a bit on the Mazda box previous, and I\'ve got used to the slight sound of rushing air at teh higher revs.
Took 2 or 3 hours to be built, but I enjoyed the experience of a part being made that really fits!
Well, after a HUGE delay, I finally ditched my knackered oem back box... I\'ve just had a Racing Beat twin-exit fitted at Jimmy\'s (usual exemplary service & cheers for the loan of your turbo II Andrew ;) )
Verdict: the nicest (car related) thing I\'ve seen and heard in a long time - exactly what I was looking for. A bit pricy but worth it - I just need it to stop snowing so i can get out and appreciate it! :D
good on ya
got the racing beat system on mine but with the single exit and must agree the sound is awesome. sounds a bit like a german messerschmitt at high revs!
found build quality to be very good aswell
Ive got the MAZDA SPEED back box. Its a nice 5" tail pipe, and its a nice burble at idle, and not too loud under acceleration. I think i only have the back box, but i havnt had a chance to go under the car looking.
As long as your happy with it, exhausts are a very personal thing.
how much did you pay for the twin back box racingbeat box and was it used ? i only ask so i have an idea of how much to put mine up for sale many thanks jason
Jason,
Mine was new from RX Motors, with Andrew at Jimmy\'s fitting it, the final bill was £593  Hence the "a bit pricy" comment in my last post!
Cheers,
Alex
