My advice. Buy, tax and insure a sensible car and have change left over from that insurance bill! Then in few years time buy somthing better and work your way up

Sorry I think you\'re mad and so is your family for even considering letting you loose in a car like like an RX

Recipe for disaster in my opinion.

To think at 17 you are either mature or skilled enough to take on a car like this is crazy

Will only end in tears.......................

£3800 is a lot of money for insurance. If they find out your the main driver they will tell you to go forth and multiply. Plus they will keep your £3800 for good measures. Best do it the legal way and be the main driver if you are. Best bet if your that desperate for a RX7 is get a gen 1 or 2 NA

Every new driver has a few dings in there first year of driving, with a car this powerful thou you are probably more likely to kill yourself or someone else then just a ding.  It took me a while to get use to the power seein that i went from a 1.4 peugeot 106 to a 2.6 twin turbo rx7, and the car has suprised me a few times and i had over 3 years driving experience

I\'d also like to add my voice to the "get something a bit slower first" chorus and not only due to the insurance cost. These cars aren\'t exactly cheap to run and they will pay you back for neglecting them. And not in a good way...

I\'ve got a tad more driving experience than three years :D (not dissing you, sweetiewells) and I\'ve narrowly avoided becoming a landscape feature several times in the first few years of driving. And that was with cars with 60-80bhp. If I\'d tried this in an FD, I would have become a rather permanent landscape feature...

Me - I think you are off your rocker;)  If you have that kind of money to waste then good luck, buying and insuring is only half of it you will be buying a 15 year old car, which will need work AND running one of these puppies aint cheap, give it a few years so that you learn to drive propperly your poor mother needs some strong advice.

simple answer here..dont do it.. iv been involved since i was 13/14 with Rx7s... and im about to go 17 next month..

Even though insurance isnt  a problem for me as im covered by the company policy , i have no intensions of running an rx7..simply because at 17 there is no way an RX7 is a sensible idea..

Im running a quick tdi sport for a year , then once iv gained road experience and also competed on track in a years time i will then consider an rx7..

Be sensible ..whats the rush....

reason they have quoted £3800 is because they know your mum is insuring the car for you, infact im suprised they even quoted!!!
too many young lads want to run before they can walk and end up being hauled out of a ditch in a body bag,im no saying you cant drive skillfully im just saying you dont have the experience or road sense to handle a fast car.get something a bit slower and work your way up for a few years getting your own no claims and it will be far cheaper and better for you in the long run.i know what its like being young(once)and wanting a fast car but i put my skill in a car and lack of accidents down to starting with a 1.0 then a 1.2 then 1.3 then 1.4 then 1.6 then 1.4 the 2.0turbo(big jump at the end but i was 25 by then and had driven over 100,000 miles).

The insurance is just one cost.  Add to that maintenance, fuel, speeding fines and don’t forget to budget for a rebuild (trust me on this one).

Your a new driver with limited real world driving experience, stepping into a high powered rear wheel car.. its a recipe for disaster!

This isn’t a personal attack on you or your age, but you need to think this through a lot more than you have!

I can remember how much of a tw@t I was when I was driving at 18! I also had no experience, and had to work my way up to a decent car - it made a lot more sense. Even now I would say I drive the 7 carefully, as it really can bite. (17 yr old && an FD == Recipe for disaster!)....sorry, c based programming joke there. Bad one at that! :p

I am not going to say dont do it like the rest, just think about it. You wouldnt want to pay almost 4k for insurance then regret it! Thats ALOT of money to give away on insurance, get a 106 gti or something for 3k then insure for 1500 or something and you will still have loads of fun and save ALOT of money!! Unless your a lottery winner or something then just do it!

As said before don\'t do it. These cars will spank you proper if they arn\'t driven properly. Blimey some insurance companies won\'t even look at you before your 30 !

If you seriously want a rotary then go the oldskool route and buy a 1st gen or a 2nd gen egi. Or even buy an mx5 and learn to drive. I have to agree that most new drivers will drive like loonies and the less power the better !

Get an MX5 and spend the money on it.  This way you will learn to drive RWD and have lots of fun too.  I got taken round the Nurburgring in a 130bhp 1.8 old skool MX5 and we did it in about 9secs or less, faster than I could in my RX.  The MX5 is one of the best handling cars you can buy, you won\'t need lots of power because you won\'t need to slow down.

It\'s a 2 seater, looks cool, is pretty fast and the birds/ladies with love it, roof down in the sun (damn, I might buy one myself!)

Wait for the RX, it will be worth it.  I had minor crashes in the first few cars I owned, you don\'t want to do that in an RX.  Then there is £200-300 a month on petrol alone, a £100 oil change every 2000-3000 miles with a £500 service every year.  The only cheap part of owning an RX is the road tax.

You may not want to hear it but this is all good advice from people who know!

If I had a car with the performance of a RX-7 when I was 17, I wouldn\'t be writing this now. I\'d be a bloody dent in the landscape

It\'s wierd.

When I was 17 I always wanted a supra (gob smacked first time I  saw it - sorry guys like it was awe-astounding when it came out - I had never seen a rx7 till quite late as they were even more rare). I was quoted 11k a year to drive it!!!

YES 11k!!

Anyhow, rather than feel disappointed by all these opinions on here, I would save and save and save. DONT get disappointed by not getting one YET. Buy something rear wheel drive (cheap) but dont waste valuable money tuning up a saxo/106 (which I ALMOST DID), or that much on insurance. Check your insurance in a years time. It drops ALOT per year - get pass plus and do stuff to get it down and your experience up. Research what you want to do to your rx7 cosmetically throughout the year - trust me this can easily be done. It gives you something to look forward to.

I am more than happy I didnt rush into it. Some uni friends still drive saxos, I drive a VERY loud bodykitted rx7.

By the way, I have a close friend who was one of the early uk owners of supras who was lucky enough to afford the 4k insurance to drive one at 20 yrs old. He had come from 2 years 1 ltr saxo ownership and didnt crash either car for the 2-3 years he owned them so it can be done (mind you supra is more forgiving).

Go for it man! 100% With you. Live the dream if you can afford it! ...but don\'t mess around with the car otherwise you WILL crash. No doubt.

Have fun :D

whilst i dont have my rex yet (im looking for the right one!) don\'t go out and buy one now. For all of the reasons mentioned above. As others said, i\'m not dissing your skills as a driver but a rex is a proper seriously quick car that can even catch out experienced drivers in the blink of an eye..check out many of the threads on this forum that start with..."just stacked the rex" etc...:(

as for insurance, i got my car when i was 18, after passing my test a year earlier. 1.3 16v Mk 4 Fiesta - fully comp insurance = £1700!! (admittedly i had just stacked my dads brand new car 3 wks earlier!) with just 1 years NCB that droppped to £870. My advice, get yourself something easy to drive and live with \'til you get used to driving then work your way up. It\'ll be more beneficial in the long run!

...Alternatively, if u\'ve just won the lottery go for it! (can u buy me one too please?! :) )

We all have done plenty of silly things in past I would agree with you, which lake did you manage to put it in as im from Shoreham, so just interested to know if it was local.

Anyway back on subject A RX for many young men/women a dream car as its high performance and amazing looks attracts so many people however as many users have said they tend to catch even the greatest drivers out because the rear wheal drive twin turbo car is can just have a random spazam leaving the owner of the car upset even with the smallest prang. I don\'t yet have mine however I am looking to buy one I have 5 years NCB and have been after a rx also for a long time. I advise you to look into the general cost of running it with a rebuild cost ect if you still want one at least get a years no clames behind you if you was me, however each to there own.

This is a soft subject as i am 20 year old and young like you...
buying the car.. insuring the car.. is the easy bit i asure you....
The most cost is maintaining and running the car.. 60% of my wage every month goes into my RX and thats not because i want to thats to keep it maintained and running right the other side of my wage goes to bills..ive had to cut out the dentist and many other things i used to do when i had a "saxo vts" spening £100 a weekend going out round town stopped..spending money willy nilly stopped.. because running a saxo i would say cost me honestly nothing...i got so used to having so much spare money spending it on rubbish i thought i would do somthing practical with my money and have somthing to show for it... i bought the RX because i could afford a RX but believe me i drive my RX every day and as a result of this it costs me roughly £100 a week just in fuel... and £2000 a year insurance... When and If you buy an RX have a good £1000 cash to play with because there WILL be things you need to do i can guarentee... And also other things like engine failure you could run into a week after you insure the car... ive seen this numberous times.. say you do get insured on an RX and you do drive it round for a year paying £3000+ insurance.. if you once touch another driver on the road and have to inform the insurance say bye bye RX becuase you will deffo not be getting insured next year... I think you should atleast wait a coupple of year yet.. when i turn 21 in august my insurance will be £1020... if i knew that i would of waited as every penny i earn goes into my car.. shes gets 10x more attension and money than any girlfriend and gets treat like a baby but when i drive we drive hard haha. my RX is all i work for because thats how much it costs me at 20 year old.
BE WISE! and learn more about the cars and save and save then when you do have the money saved you can get the right RX at a nice high price and know more in the rotary world what your options are thats more or less perfect first time which saves you alot money... because if you have a small budget for an RX you will need to hammer money into her and do alot of work. and dont compare anything on an RX to a saxo because i can guarentee that anything you buy for a saxo is 3x more expensive for an RX7. because i know ive done it.. hope this helps man!

After the trackday at cadwell I would recommend getting an mx5 as a starter. They will teach you how to drive a rear wheel drive car and will be insurable at your age.

Trust me it doesn\'t get any easier, I\'ve just had a quote for £740 on a single turbo without commute at age of 30 with a 5k limit.

Who is your insureance with that quite reasonable with your age. Im only 23 going on 24 and adrian flux was quoting me 1100 fully comp with 5 years ncb and no points. Though i just applyed to sky insureance as peter best could not help me with classic car insureance on the rx because im not 25 :(
