Title: RX7 Suspension Bush Replacement Tips.
Post by: Tiger_kpt on February 20, 2007, 02:38:47 PM
As the new proud owner of a 1993 UK spec Mazda RX7 FD13 Twin Turbo, manual, silver, mint condition... I aim to keep it this way!

It has 1000 miles left until it\'s big 24k mile service. I have timed this in with buying a few tasty parts to be fitted alongside the service - likely to be done at WGT. Now... from the previous owner... I know that there are at least two, maybe three rear suspension bushes that need replacing this time round.

In fact... with the large amount of service history and paperwork that came with the car, it is clear that at nearly every service at least one bush needed to be changed (front or rear), if not then an advisory was given for the next time round on them.

And at £50-£65 a shot for just the bush - labour to fit it charged on top... keeping up with the metal bushes on the Rex could become a financial drain and a downright pain in the arse.

One thing I had come accross were these two listings...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/POWERFLEX-COMPLETE-REAR-BUSH-KIT-MAZDA-RX7-1992_W0QQitemZ290084070571QQihZ019QQcategoryZ40192QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/POWERFLEX-COMPLETE-REAR-BUSH-KIT-MAZDA-RX7-1992_W0QQitemZ290084070571QQihZ019QQcategoryZ40192QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Now... these seem like very cheap sets of bushes. It would make more sense buying both sets and having them all fitted at once. Saving alot of money in the long run.

One question... are these bushes advertised here direct replacements for the notoriously unreliable metal Mazda bushes on our Rex suspension set-ups? Or are these to replace a completely different set of rubber bushes which I am unaware of? Would just rather clear this up as am unsure as to how many bushes are on the vehicle... and which ones are the most troublesome?!?

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated and welcomed with wide open arms! :Thumbsup!  lol

Thanks,
Kyle.

sorry, not quite the answer you are looking for but i\'m 99% certain that there are far more bushes than what these powerflex kits contain.  when they say complete i think they mean it in a "all the bushes that powerflex make" type way.

if you have a look at the powerflex website it should show you a diagram of which bushes they cover - but as to which are metal or otherwise i dunno

I\'ve not properly looked at which bushes they do but i know superflex cover the rx7 too (superflex.co.uk)

I bought and fitted these 2 kits over Xmas.  The kits do not include:-

Rear Pilow Ball bushings (3no either side) - £45.00 each extra
Rear Shock bottom bush
Rear toe control link bushes (2no per side, 1no outer being a pillow ball bush) - £60.00 each extra.

Apart from that, the bushes are a very good fit.

Cheers Jon

Thanks for that jonrx7uk... so these two kits combined with the extra ones that you listed above replace ALL of the bushes on the REX front and rear suspension set-ups? So no need to keep replacing them in the future?

Where did you get the extra ones from and what brand? Are they still Powerflex?

Did the bushes make much difference in terms of handling performance and ride quality?

Cheers.
Kyle.

Yes, all bushes will be replaced (even anti-roll bars).

I had already replaced most of the steel pillow bushes on the rear previously.  These can be bought direct from WGT (just ask for Pip) who always them in stock.  The only ones i have not replaced are the rear shock bottom bushes as these appear to be fine.

There is absolutely no knocking or wandering-about now from the car.
I\'ve not noticed any extra noise or harshness, but to be fair, the suspension (Tein Super Street) is on it\'s highest & softest setting at the moment for winter commuting..  I will have a better idea of any improvements when i go to Croft in March!!!

However,
Changing all the bushes is not for the faint hearted.  You will need a press / hundreds of the correct size sockets / threaded bar (M10 & M12) / electric hack-saw / patience / time etc etc.

I also damaged both front ABS sensors, 1no.dust boot, and sheared 2no.bolts.....

Cheers
Jon
