Hi all. I\'m new to the site. Registered up after purchasing my very first Rotary.
The car is question is a 1993 UK-SPEC 3rd Gen RX7 Twin Turbo, manual, silver and a few trick mods. :D
Am well chuffed with it to say the least with her. Am just starting this thread to post pics up of her when I get round to take some of her when I find the time...
... and to also see if there are any other RX7 owners and members of this site that are around the Nottingham / Nottinghamshire / Midlands area which I can network with, to help me become an active member of the Rotary scene in my area.
Hope this thread is welcomed and not out of place. With any luck, will hear from some of you soon.
Kyle :WaveBye
Good morning and welcome.
Good to see more members joining in the east midlands area. Unfortunatley its a bit of a rotary black hole im afraid and theres not many about round here. So more the merrier I say. And uk cars are by far the best and the fastest:D :D :D :wave :Thumbs-up
Regards Andy
Welcome Kyle!
I\'m in the Nottingham area, used to live in Keyworth and I\'m now in the city centre. My rex is currently sitting out the winter on axle stands but as soon as the weather picks up I\'ll be out in her so we\'ll have to meet up.
Kind Regards
Jake
Hallo and welcome, I believe d-king is next door to you in Heanor! I\'m in Chesterfield so a bit north of you and currently it\'s on axle stands mid-way through an engine transplant :)
im in derby which aint too far from notts :D
Ahhh. Good to see that there are quite a few Rex\'s in my area. Be good to arrange a meet at some point in our area. Having been members of various vehicle forums, the Midlands area always seems a tad dead. We should make the effort at some point. Be good to get more involved in the Rotary community.
I take it that you guys don\'t use your Rex\'s during the Winter months? Mine will be my daily driver, weekend fun and show car all in one. Hopefully it works out that way.
I\'m currently getting a few bits for it such as gauge pods, boost gauge, water temp gauge, oil temp gauge, HKS dump valve, HKS intake. Am thinking of getting hold of a direct replacement aluminium performance Koyo radiator, HKS cat-back exhaust system (to replace the Racing Beat one it has at the moment).
It\'s due it\'s 24k service - the big one. Needs a couple of bushes. Will have all of the above fitted and have the vacuum pipes replaced. THINK WGT is our local specialist, in Middleton. Right? Still a fair trek at over an hour!
Wheels are sorted. Has rare Works Emotion 18-inch set-up. Mint condition in Ventus tyres.
Was thinking about de-catting it and fitting a better intercooler, but think I would have to play with the engine management to do so. Right?
You guys recommend any other mods?
Cheers,
Kyle.
I met Fletcher - with the 1997 spec Jap import TT Rex, in white. He\'s in Long Eaton also. Not sure if he\'s a member on here though.
I\'ve also seen a red Rex kicking around the Long Eaton area before. Black alloys, black Jap spoiler, tints, etc. Not sure who\'s that is. Could be d-king\'s?
Yeah as soon as you start de-catting you want to start looking at engine management or it could spell trouble. The Apexi Power FC tends to be the weapon of choice for the Rex although there are other options.
It\'s already had the troublesome pre-cat removed by fitting a performance downpipe. But it still retains the main centre section cat. I\'ve had that the pre-cat is responsible for ALOT of the Rotary engine rebuilds around the 60k miles mark. That\'s what i\'ve heard anyway, but may be a myth.
My Rex is on 109k. Had a full rebuild at Rototechnics at 65k miles. So new engine done around 45k miles. The specialist rebuilt engine apparently lasts longer than the Mazda factory build. Due to them using much better parts. Again, may be a myth.
Probably a myth, most tuners will use Mazda OEM parts as they\'re usually better than others.
Definitely look at a PFC if you get rid of the main cat, will get you more power once mapped anyways and best to be safe :)
I use mine as my main car but I commute to work on foot and train so don\'t drive it every day. Currently transplanting a 30k engine block into it and keeping mine for a full on rebuild over time as funds allow.

Give me a shout Kyle if you sell this mate:Typing
Hey,
I\'m near Melton Mowbray so not too far from you. I\'ve also got a 93 UK FD, mines in Montego Blue. Few bits planned for the summer $$$\'s permitting.
Jake - Still to get the downpipe from you fitted. Should be done same time as getting power FC and mapping done.
Cheers
G
Hi GeckoGareth, yeah not too far away from me then. I live in Nottingham, but work in Leicester at the CAT plant, Desford.
Yeah mine\'s a UK spec FD13, silver.
G@NDY (G@NDY) - If I do remove this to replace it with another branded tail pipe then i\'ll surely give you a shout.
Just out of interest... how many UK spec RX7\'s are left these days? Was there only 124 ever made / sold?
^ Thanks buddy.
Quotehow many UK spec RX7\'s are left these days
I reackon theres only around 40 left:Thumbsup!

Now that\'s a b1tch of a job fitting a down-pipe...Good luck with that one mate :Thumbsup!
40 left eh? Wow, didn\'t think that there was that few left. A dying breed. Going to make sure I look after her as much as the last owner has done.
What local specialists do you guys tend to use for work on your Rex\'s in our area? From servicing to more in depth work?
I will use WGT for major stuff but things like oil, filters, suspension, exhaust i\'ll either do myself or take to a good garage I\'ve found near where I work in Sheffield. I\'m taking the engine out myself so hopefully that\'ll give me more confidence with other stuff as well.
I use a garage near Sleaford. Prestige Vehicle Imports. Good bunch of lads and they know there stuff. I highly recommend them for the annual MOT;) :Laugh

Welcome :wave
I am in the Midlands so give us a shout if ever you need anything.
Have fun with your new baby :D
As for specialists in our area I always make the trip to Pip at WGT as its not that far really and the service is second to none. Thats where I would recomend but I am sure there are others local :D

Morning all...
That sounds interesting Bobert... where in Derby is he Stenson Bubble meet? And what sort of gathering is it? General modified cars? Will have to have a blitz down there to see what the crack is.
Anyone else know of regular meets around this area? :bandit
lol. Hobnobs and Custard Creams. Jack that... i\'ll bring the Jammy Dodgers!

I did mine in my garage with some help. It\'s not too difficult but very fidily as there is so little space. When I did mine a couple of the nuts came off the bolts but the others were fixed tight so the bolts came out damaging one of the threads. We had to re-trace the thread before we could use it again.

Hi Guys,

Sounds like a plan if you\'re up for it. My mechanical knowledge and toolkit are both equally rubbish but I can certainly supply the hobnobs, custard creams or indeed Jammie dodgers :D
I ought to get the PFC and commander ordered sharpish if the downpipes going on. I don\'t think I could afford a blown engine.
Cheers
G
That Bubble Inn meet sounds spot on. Will have to get involved with that one. Will go to the next one.
Anyone got a postcode for the pub so that I can do a route? Not too familiar with Derby.
Cheers,
Kyle.
il be goin to the next one mate so you could convoy down with me cause felt a bit left out down there last time bein the only rex and not knowing anybody , in only at junction 26 on the M1 then about a mile in
Hi d-king. Definitely. I\'m game for that mate. If you let me know an exact date and time... i\'ll meet you at J26 (not sure when the next one is). Add me to your MSN using kyle.testo@btinternet.com. Sounds like a plan. Just moved up to this area of Nottinghamshire and could do with getting to know more peeps! :Thumbsup!

I think I might have just seen you in your rex.
I was driving down the Ilkeston bypass when I saw a silver rx7 go flying down the other way.
You don’t see that many about. Was it you?
Dai Capp is based just outside Nottingham. Montego Blue RX with Dragon rebuild. Going to be Dyno\'d next week.
Hi guys
I\'m another one form Derby so not to far. I\'ve missed out on the Bubble Inn meets but will probably pop down once the weather warms up abit..........and once I\'ve got my engine rebuilt.
Hay,
I\'m just up in Chesterfield as well, just a short blast away.:burnout
I won\'t be able to get to a Bubble Inn meet till May unfortunately :(
probed,
I\'d be interested in meeting up for a blast down to the bubble when ya motors sorted.
Let me know if you\'d be up for it.
Craig
I\'ll be up for a meet, just spent the last 2 weeks giving my 95 Type r some well deserved TLC. Not ran it properly for 18 months or so. I live in Giltbrook round the corner from Ikea Notts.
I see the odd FD flying about, the last one I saw was a nice black one.

I\'m just up the road from LE in Chilwell. Not got a Rex yet, been toying with the idea for years now and in a position to buy if I choose to - just not sure whether I should! I\'ve already got a 243bhp DC5 Integra Type-R (black with black wheels in case you see me about - it\'s not likely to be anyone else! :D )
There is a very tempting one that\'s come up down south and I am struggling to resist, my only concern is that a 430bhp single turbo car is an unwise choice for my first RWD motor! (If you don\'t count the ex-Post Office LDV van I\'ve just bought!)
Will keep an eye out for you boys, the only one I see with any regularlity is Babz Audio (is he still about on here - haven\'t seen the car for a whlie thinking about it...)
buy it mate you wont regret it but be dam careful cus even at 320bhp they do bite ya in the wet !!! their is a nice single tub for sale in ilkeston for pretty good money in blue , its in the auto trader and the admag !!!
Quote from: nicksterrx7Dai Capp is based just outside Nottingham. Montego Blue RX with Dragon rebuild. Going to be Dyno\'d next week.
Yup that\'s me - Castle Donington...
Montego Blue, Dragon rebuild, V mount, uprated fuel pump, rails and injectors, ignition amp, wide downpipe and stright thru exhaust, under drive pulleys, air filters, ECU. Dynoed at 304bhp rear wheels on stock twins on Tuesday...
When\'s the next meet at The Bubble, 11 March?
Cheers
DC
Haha, I wouldn\'t expect any other reaction on here! :Giggle
I\'m not sure I could resist this one down south - I\'m amazed it\'s not owned by somebody on here as according to the description it\'s extremely well looked after and has been serviced by both WGT and Re:Worx including a rebuild of both engine and turbo 50 miles ago!
Did you guys have other RWD cars before the Rex(s)?
As an aside, Carl Hayward told me he actually thinks non-seq or single is actually safer as the smaller turbo is prone to spooling up unexpectedly. I know I shouldn\'t be a girl about these things, but I\'m not keen on crashing! It would be a fair-weather car for me as I\'d keep the DC5 (and the van...), although in this country you can\'t really bank on the weather even if there\'s not a cloud in the sky when you leave the house!
Most likely I\'d take some track tuition and maybe start using it on track, I guess that would help get used to the car.
yeah bubble meet is this weekend bud , will you be taking yours down ??? il be going down in mine again this month , yeah ive had a couple of cossies mate but they have never caught me out like the rex does its a treat in the wet ;0)

yay that means i wont be there on my own again like last time :0) cant get her too dirty tho cause im going to get all my graphics applied on monday !!
Hey guys. Hi Kev.
I\'ll be down for the Bubble Meet this weekend. We should all arrange to meet somewhere and take the ride down together if that suits.
Probedb - I got your text message mate. I will get round to calling you over the weekend regarding our polishing sevice. Not ignoring you. Just stupidly busy!
you could all meet round my house cause probedb is picking his lights up on sunday at 12pm so we could set off just after if you wanted ???
Sounds like a plan to me if i\'ve ever heard one. What time?
Cunning plan. Imao.
errr 12pm maybe lol ??? you bringing the other half ??? really nice place for lunch is the bubble :0)
I will go down on sunday. not in the rex tho:( It wont be ready
Yeah other half will be going mate. Spending the day fitting my filter and HKS twin ignition system today. 12 at yours is good by me Kev!
hi hows it going have you fit that hks dump valve yet and ive not seen your car yet might see you soon but is ne one going to the donny show in april
Hi Fletcher. Good to see that you\'ve joined the forum mate. I\'ve just spent the last week doing some odd bits to it. Took me 6hours to fit new plugs, Magnecor wires and a Pettit Racing AST. Just installed the Apexi PFC and commander tonight. Halfway through setting it up I THINK. lol.
Yeah you\'ll have to get in touch with me soon and we\'ll meet. Car is booked in at WGT\'s. Taking her in this Saturday for a week for some major work. Not going to fit the HKS dump valve in the end. Going to re-sell it and the fitting kit. Going down the Greddy route as most of the parts I have to fit are Greddy.
If you or d-king has text me over the last week or so. Appologies. But my phone is in the repair shop. lol. Got a bit broke. lol.
How\'s your motor going?
ha did wonder what had happened to ya bud !!! whats happening at wgt then ????
dont worry about it you have been busy got one of them apexi ecu but mines at dragon all booked in to have some stuff done how hard was that hks thing to put in sounds got to me see you soon
Should have my phone back after the weekend. New phone. Some kind of software problem. Won\'t disengage from offline mode. Nokia N73. lol. Common problem with them apparently.
Well I changed plugs and leads myself. Same for the Pettit Racing AST with Race cap, Greddy pressure cap, ARC super induction box (sucks like a Bangkok whore, lol), HKS twin power ignition amplifier, Apexi PFC/Commander and Greddy turbotimer. WGT will be fitting my other parts... such as what\'s left of the full service, Greddy turbo elbow, Greddy Type RS BOV, Greddy pulley set, removal of airpump, fitting of straight through mid-pipe (removal of cat), Koyo radiator, Sard thermostat, ACT streetlite clutch, flywheel and counterweight, full inspection, compression test, I know it needs a couple of suspension bushes, a mapping session as well as a host of gauges and pods.
Will be going to a high flow cat later on around MOT time. Bigger intercooler and a top up map for that. Then leave at that.
Was thinking of having the vacuum hoses replaced but don\'t think it needs it. May get this done later on.
Canny wait to get her back! Having alot of fun with her at the moment. Think the missus is jealous! Imao.
Oh will be doing EBC Redstuff pads with cross drilled and grooved discs all round at some stage as well as going to coilover units on the suspension. All in time though. Proving to be a money sink at the moment.
you know your Greddy elbow did you get the pipe that gos to the intercooler from the elbow cant seem to find one for mine
Hmmm. Yeah... that\'s one part which I do not have at the moment. I\'m hoping that WGT can sort me out with that when they come to fitting it. I\'ll make a post to ask what to use and where from for that pipe - and keep you updated.
nice one what ht leeds have you got looking at some but dont know what to get
Well I highly recommend Magnecor leads. I wouldn\'t go as far as using the 10mm (blue) variant from them as that\'s a bit overkill. I went for the KV85 range. 8.5mm (red) wires.
I got them cheap new though. I ordered alot of parts direct from Pettit Racing in the USA. Spoke to a guy called Jeff there. He gave me fairly good discount on the shipping, but paid in full for the parts. The order was with me within literally three or four days - sent via FEDEX International Airfreight Express service. Paid no customs duty on it either. And because of the exchange rate the leads worked out like £20 new. Even the plugs (both 7\'s and 9\'s... worked out like £5 each). Very cheap in comparison to over here.
If you want anything from him, go through me, and i\'ll sort it for you. Visit their website. Just type Pettit Racing into a Google search.
are the 10mm really that bad because ive just colour coded my engine bay in blue
No, nothing wrong with using the 10mm blue ones from Magnecor. Wouldn\'t have any ill or side-effects with using them. Can only help. Just a little bit of an over-kill for a mildy tuned engine and are more expensive than the 8.5mm KV85 ones. Using either would be fine. Just whether you think they\'re worth the extra expense mate.
i want about 400 bhp out my rex so how much money do you want for the 10mm magnecor +p&p
Just looking on the site now. The 10mm and the 8.5mm wires are pictured as red in colour. Can\'t really see them in the engine bay anyway! lol. There may be a colour option when ordering, not sure.
The 10mm wires are priced at $75 and the 8.5mm wires at $60.
Shipping wouldn\'t be a great amount. Probably $30 tops. I would suggest buying the new plugs from them at the same time too.
Are you running a standard AST tank at the moment? If you do then you want shut of it fast. Pettit Racing metal one is mint. Fitted it myself. Looks ace. Works better. Solves a very common problem of splitting on the standard plastic tank down it\'s seam due to heat, dispersing of the coolant and a blown engine.

Link to RX7 store - Pettit Racing.
got one but its a d1 spec need to put it on but want to change all the hoses to blue if they only come in one colour then ill have the 8.5 ones was going to put new plugs but dont know witch ones to put in would you give me a hand with putting the ast on
what in the ast is it only water????
Yeah no worries. AST takes around 30minutes tops mate. Remove battery and casing to gain access to it. Simple job. Lose a bit of coolant but just top up afterwards.
I would go with NGK BUR7EQP for leading and NGK BUR9EQP for trailing. I did this rather than 9\'s all round and they work great. If you ran 7\'s as leading then I doubt you would ever have a flooded engine again mate as they run hotter and as per Mazda spec.
They are expensive over here. Really expensive, which is why people run 9\'s all round here as it\'s alot cheaper to do so. But if buying from the US this is not an issue.
AST only holds water - well coolant.
well can you order them for me when would you like the money for them best go and do my ast
Let me know what you want and i\'ll get a total for you mate.
If you want a hand with the AST give me a shout. Not too difficult.
the same as you the 8.5 magnecor and the 7&9 plugs + p&p
CRANE Ignition Hi-6 Amplifier are they ne good and are they hard to put in
Yes mate. They\'re the best. Definitely worth having. I have the HKS version. The twin power ignition amplifier. CRANE is highly recommended though. Would accompany the Apexi PFC, Magnecors and spark plug set-up magnificently.
ill give you a ring about 6 if thats ok to talk about money if you what to order that stuff for me
Yeah no problem mate.
The leads are $60.
The plugs are $11 each - $44.
I will see what shipping options there are available. Price of this would really depend upon how fast you want them.
Think I may order a few more parts with them at the same time.
fast fast fast
Don\'t suppose
you can do that if you want
Don\'t suppose any of you guys want either the following: -
HKS SSQV dump valve with fitting kit - looks new - bought from Fletcher - £50
Greddy Trust panel filter - yellow foam, black metal mesh - new - £20
HKS turbo timer with HKS FD RX7 wiring loom - new loom, used unit - £30
Just some items that i\'ve accumulated that I could do with clearing out. Can collect if in this area.
I\'ll send Jeff an e-mail at Pettit Racing after i\'ve decided what I want off of him and i\'ll get onto ordering it all then.
let me know how you get on
Have sent the e-mail and list his way. Will keep you updated mate.
