Title: Exhaust Swap
Post by: grinder on February 18, 2007, 01:59:17 PM
Hiya chaps

Seeing as its a nice day - i decided to remove the exhaust ready for the single exit ( also due to travellingbob trying to get me banned for not fitting my toys )

got the car jacked up and the exhaust off - gonna refit the single exit one next week ( need to do "dad" stuff for the rest of the day )

when i got the exhaust off - i had to split the Y pipe - one bolt came off just fine - the other had no threads at all - so out came the "grinder" :D :D

Here are some pics of the progress :

Very nice indeed, is the weight much difference?
Title: Exhaust Swap
Post by: Brett on February 18, 2007, 02:43:13 PM
Theres a good weight saving on the single exit system, cant tell you exactly how much it is, but its a fair bit less :D

Oh yeah, found out yesterday that some muppet broke into the workshop and stole my spare TII exhaust system (Stock) - its been found 60yards down the road dumped in the ditch >:(

Grinder did it come with a Down pipe?
Title: Exhaust Swap
Post by: grinder on February 18, 2007, 06:49:14 PM
nah its just the cat back - from looking at it - it should bolt up fine ( or it better do )

it looks like it goes from a standard sise flange and then goes to either a 2.5 or 3 inch pipe - then into the back box

will get it down from the loft and offer it up before i start again

i only bought it cause it was cheap - i was happy with the duals to be honest !! :D

i might leave the bung in it to be honest - just to keep the noise down - will try it without first :D :D :D

Just give it a paint anywhere the underseal is thinning Stu should be fine for this year. Stay with the car when they test it there only allowed moderate force to check the condition if they start bashing the underside then stop them and complain.

whilst its up in the air - i might give it a good going over again

not sure though .. me and shaun are hoping to do the suspension soon , and i dont want to end up covered in under seal ??

when i did it at yours - i put 5 litres on the under side - so i reckon another 5 litres should do the trick :D

Loose the bung that comes with it Stu - It saps all the power and makes the car sound like a vacuum cleaner on steroids. (I alos reckon it increases noise in the cabin)

Post by: grinder on February 24, 2007, 02:22:36 PM
hiya chaps

well started to fit the exhaust and it wont go on :(

the gaskets they sent are they wrong size ( well the ones that came with it )

they are both designed for a 3inch system and where it meets up its only 2.5 inch - so need to get a stock gasket from somewhere

so its not looking like it will be on till next weekend .. gutted to say the least :(

and i think im at the old school meet next weekend - so it could be after that

i must admit - it looks a nice system when i offered it up to the car :D :D :D

Well your full of excuses if nothing else Stu. Exhaust assembly paste will do...........added bonus its cheap.
Kevin
Title: Exhaust Swap
Post by: grinder on February 24, 2007, 09:20:25 PM
i have exahust paste - but it says its for filling gaps ??

i must admit i prefer a gasket i dont trust sealant ( or is that just me being silly ?? )

Any more ideas welcomed !

and kev - i spotted a suspect patch under the car before - it felt a bit "soft" - not sure if i can patch it up - will have to see what happens - typically enough though - its about 1 inch after the plate that you welded on for me ( on the sill )

If you used it a bit more stu it would dry it out underneath! There\'s two types of paste one a repair paste the other an assembly paste.
Kevin
Title: Exhaust Swap
Post by: grinder on February 24, 2007, 09:39:24 PM
ahhhhhhhh makes sense on both counts !! :D

so the assembly paste .. just slap it on both faces and fit the system ??

Humm tempted by this idea to be honest :D

I am fully supportive of your attitude towards stu Kev!!!  Fit or Ban. And for every lame excuse there should be a punishment!!! hmmmmmm now what could it be...... ideas are welcome people. Just use the paste. If all the bolts are new and the paste for some wack reason doesnt work then it will be an easy enough fix and by then you will have the right gasket. You are so going to be loving your car once all the good bits are on it mate! it is just a wee bit hard to get you to do it!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe we should have a mini meet at Stu\'s ??   He supplies all the beer and the BBQ?
Title: Exhaust Swap
Post by: grinder on February 25, 2007, 11:15:10 AM
yeah cheers

to be honest i didnt realise how hard it was to try and fit an exhaust by yourself

it really isnt easy - its a pain in the rear to hold up , keep steady and try and get nuts and bolts into :(

and to make matters worse - the heating has packed up in the house and its bloody freezing :( - so we have NO heating at all or hot water - what a way to start a sunday eh :(

Post by: grinder on March 02, 2007, 01:05:05 PM
right then :D

got me the gasket from mazda , on the way back thought i would pop into partco to see what they could do

showed them what i got - he found a 99% match one in about 5 seconds - its slightly smaller by about 3mm ( bore ) but all the bolt holes line up just fine

so ..........

Mazda Exhaust Gasket - N378-40-305 - 6.09 inc VAT
Part co - UGCFDG29 - 2.35 inc VAT

so got 2 from partco as these are for the back boxes for the cab

put the info here for future reference - may add it to the FAQ\'s aswell

Post by: grinder on March 08, 2007, 07:41:36 PM
hiya chaps

well the exhaust is on and i really like how it looks :D :D

and yes - it \'FC\'UKING loud - might run with the baffle in

its the crappiest fit ever though - been on the phone to brett about it and its right up tight on the chassis/seat area

no idea how to pull it away from there - its not using the rubbers so thats not pulling it

just no idea if it will go thru the MOT like that ?

and i dont know what bit is forcing it to sit at that angle ??

its dark now so cant look - but not sure if its the way its held at the tail pipe or what

working on the drive doesnt help as you cant get under the car to see whats causing it

why is nothing simple on these cars

still - it looks VERY nice :D
