Hi guys, Iv finally grown up and want to buy rear wheel drive toy instead of my front wheel drive toy so im looking at an FD3 RX7. Iv found a very nice FD3 down in Southampton which i really like. My big concern is the mileage and the lack of engine info to determine the state the engine is in. The mileage is 57,000 miles and i dont think it has had an engine rebuild. My question is if i take the car out for a drive is there anyway of determining what the state of the engine is in (ie compression). Will it feel like its boosting alot but lack of performance or will it idle erratically with compression problems. There is an engineers report from Japan saying everything is mechanically sound but for all i know they could have just check tightened everything.
Any opinion welcome.Thanks
Hi,
Is this car a fresh import? Also who is it being sold by? Is it twin or single turbo.
Drive the car, check that it boosts fine. Start from hold and cold shouldnt require too much effort. Ideally have the compression tested by a rotary specialist. Check too see what level the car is idling at.
Can you post a copy of the engineers report?
The car is a twin turbo with a few bolt ons like fmic and apexi fc commander. It is a fresh import and its being imported by F1autos. When i go to see the car i\'ll see if i can get a copy of the report or have a good read and pass the info on. It is graded as a 4 which i think is good but does this only apply to the bodywork? What sort of idle level should it be at cold and hot?
Thanks
on startup you will see about 1200 and it should be even once it has warmedup the revs should drop to about 800ish and again it should sound even, dont be alarmed on startup if you see quite a bit of white smoke - this is normal and should clear after a min or 2.
One word of caution if this is a fresh import you need to look at replacing the tyres and also get the apexi re-mapped for our fuel, for what ever reason Jap tyres dont like out roads and the car would have been mapped for 100ron fuel.
You also have a couple of rotary specialists not far from Southampton - REworx in Portsmouth and RX Motors in Dorset, both would be happy to provide a comp test and report ..... just to put your mind at rest [and use this as a bit of discount getting:Thumbs-up ]
i second that!
Very very few cars have been graded 4 recently - especially RZ models. Do you have any pics of the car? Also, mileage?
Also check to see any knocks from the rear end during test drive as a way of worn bushes.
Good luck with your new venture into the world of rear wheel POWER..............:3gears-lh
Welcome to MRC,
Have a read through this section, it may help and also in conjunction with the advise above make sure the car starts hot as well as cold as this can mean low compression.

Also listen for any gurgling noises from the water system after it has run as this also is not good.
Hope this helps
Hi guys, thanks for all the info i appreciate the help. Here are some photos that i got sent of the car when it was in japan.

Like i said its been graded as a 4. But my main worry is the milage which is 57,000. Before i get it remapped for English fuel can i run about on optimax, ultimate or tesco 99? or will this damage the engine.
Thanks again.
First up it is not a RZ. Also, it looks Montego Blue to me. Anyone else?
I\'ll try and dig some more info by e mail. Drop me a line; freddy__k@hotmail.com
:)

I\'d second that, I think I can see a bit of the green flip in some parts.
My personal recommendation is remap asap. At least take it easy until the maps been checked. Optimax / 99 Tesco is the way to go anyway.
Hi guys, i dont think i mentioned it was an RZ but the advert says type R. I never noticed the green shine to the paint work.
How did you know it wasn\'t an RZ by the photo?
Thanks

sorry to hijack the thread but i\'ve had my rear bushes replaced and i still get a knocking noise from the rear passengers side? i was told by a friend that its the safety cage needs re-welding? could this be the reason? where is the safety cage?!? :3Confused

I don\'t understand what your friend is saying. Does it have an aftermarket cage fitted?

not an rz, has no badges on the rear quarters & it has a rear wiper.
hope that helps,
if you are being sold it as a RZ then you can be certain you\'re either being ripped off or those are not the pics of the right car.

not that im aware of? what is the safety cage?
am I being thick here or what. I can\'t see Carrington mentioning it being an RZ anywhere, as far as I can see Freddy was the first to mention RZ.
As for the mileage, are you sure that its not 57000kms, as that is a lot less than 57k miles.
personally I\'d do a bit of net research on the importer and see if I can dig up any dirt on them, and second, remap coolant flush and new tyres before you even get it boosting.
Hi guys, well i went to see the RX7 today down in southampton and all i can think about is how smooth and amazing it was to drive. An RX7 really is in a class of its own. I checked the idle and the temps like people said and and checked out how it sounded. Also restarted it after turning it off for a minute and it started straight away. All i can say is the car is AMAZING. I took it for a spin and it felt really tight to drive so i think the bushes are ok on it. My only question is about the Apexi FC controller, The car seemed to pull from very low down all the way to 6500rpm (this is when i thought i should change now) and i could feel the second turbo at 4500rpm but the turbos just seemed to boost to 0.5 bar (this is what the defi gauge said). I think this is alittle less then standard. Could there be a second map on the ECU which has a higher boost setting and the one i drove about on today was just a conservative map?
Any help appreciated.

Someone with more knowledge on the twins will answer shortly but I think it it is 0.8 bar. The apexi would have shown you the peak that was reached. Is there a separate boost controller like a profec b or something like that as that allows more than one boost setting? If I were you I would put up a post and ask very nicely if any one experienced on here lives near where the car is located and will look at it with you. There are some very helpfull people on this site and you might get lucky. Glad you liked the rx7, they do feel special :)
unless the boost has been reduced which is unlikely the car has some sort of problem.
it could be very minor such as a solonoid issue or a pipe having popped off somewhere to something more serious with the turbos. you can search for boosting issues or problems or 0.5 bar and you will find many threads telling you about these types of problems but if i were you i would take someone who is well in the know and also bring it to the owners attention as its something you can do without to be honest.
my car had a variety of problems lets say but slowly i got through it and learnt alot but its not something you want to do with your "new" car.
also when mine wouldnt boost above 0.5 it felt really smooth too but thats just because its less aggresive when boost is that low. 0.8 bar is where the fun is.
use the pfc to check boost also as that picks up its signal from the stock map sensor so it will give you the reading that the engine is seeing.
good luck and make you dont rush in so you get the maximum enjoyment from it.
any problems give me a call my number and email are all over the place.
Carrington---I notice you are only 10mins up the road from me at DAVENTRY.
Give me a ring on 07771882430 and we can meet up, you come to me or I will pop over to you. HTH.:wave
P.S. My FD is Montego Blue as well.
