Title: Not sure about my New Cusco 2 Way Diff
Post by: antnicuk on February 10, 2007, 06:39:02 PM
Well I have just completed a new wave of mods on my TII.

I have re made the exhaust from the Y split back and gone from a 3" into two 2.5 boxes, and now have a 3" into two 3" pipes to 3" rear boxes. Its a little quieter and more fre flowing which is what i was hoping to achieve.

I have fitted Mazdatrix uprated gearbox mounts and made a polybushed mount to hold it even more and thats has worked well. The gearbox doesnt move at all.

I fitted new Mazdatrix uprated Diff mounts but i cant tell if they are any good because:....................

I fitted a nearly new Cusco 2 way diff.   I had a Mazda LSD already but this new one is a bit extreme for road use. It clonks at low speed quite a lot although i havent been in car with one of these types of diffs so its hard to say if its normal.  But..... once you start pushing it, it really comes into its own. Its soo easy to control and feels like its pushing you through the bend, once the car lets go its easy to control the sideways action. I can see why the drift boys like them.   :3gears-lh

Once you take it easy it quickly reminds you its not meant for normal road driving, if you go around a small round about it feels like someone is smacking the rear wheels with a sledge hammer, the car takes little steps sideways.
Are they supposed to do this?  I would like to go out in someones car that has one.  Its the RS model which is supposed to be more forgiving than the MZ one.

Do they need running in?  its only done 200 miles.

I will wait until i get it on the track,  if i feel its worth the sacrifice then i will keep it otherwise i will be selling it. It will be great for drag racing though  :mmmm

Thats one of the Drawbacks of the 2 Way Diff, wat your feeling is both wheels turning at the same speed going round, as you proberly know a diff usalay lets one wheel turn faster than the other so you don\'t have the little skips as the Outer wheel trys to turn quicker than the Inner.

I had a Kaaz 1.5 Diff and that was alot better for it, i think 2 ways are realy for Drag racing and Drifting.

From memory mine never Clunked? Did you set the End flote up when you swaped them over?

it had already been fitted in to its casing but was done by a gear box specialist, not that it means anything!.   Thats why i really need to go in someone elses.   I thought they locked after a certain amount of power was put down, not just coasting around slowly.

I thought it may be a little extreme for me but as it came with the car i thought i would give it a go.

Nar mine was basicly Locked, it would lock with and without power.

You right the 2 way is a Bit extreme, i had one for a matter of weeks in a nearly stock T2 and it got on my nerves so i went for the 1.5 which was better.

I had a 2 way in the last FD and it did exactly that, and its how it\'s suppose to be :Thumbs-up

I love the way they seem to pull you throught the corners! The skipping and clonking is a drawback but how often do you drive slow :Laugh

very true, makes me feel a bit better, it was the first day out today and it was wet so i couldnt give it too much stick.   I will have to put some miles on it and see how i get on.  I cant wait for the next track day!

any ideas if there is one coming up?

My Kaaz Diff had its own oil (came packaged up as Kaaz Diff oil, so the only time the oil was changed i used there own Brand.

Is there not a US or UK main Distributor of Cusco you can Aproch?

I used to use Castrol 351 ( I think)

Only use oil that is for a limited slip diff because if you use normal hypoid oil the plates will just slip against each other and the diff won\'t work

Hi clive (you were right)

That oil rings a bell, the guy showed me the can that he used and it was castrol, he got it from a cusco outlet who told him to use this castrol so i assume its got the right oil in it.  (it definately locks).  I have heard other people mention that these diffs knock, i suppose its just how much of a compramise you are willing to put up with.

Lots of them clunk Ant, some more than others. They tend to get a bit quieter as they bed in - the Kaaz ones used to suggest opposite figure of 8s for ages to run them in, dunno about other brands. The 1.5 in my blue one is averagely noisey, Phil\'s 2-way used to be horrid :D

Give it a while and see how it feels on the track before u bin it :Viking

i use NEO 75/140 HD in mine. It may be Different because my diff is carbon. the only thing i would say when you come of the gas you get a wineing sound which i never had i got this after i came of the drag strip.
