Title: whats the best engine to use?
Post by: cwin on February 10, 2007, 10:25:45 AM
Hi
I have a fd 3 series single turbo that i use for trackdays,I want a spare engine which i will get built by wgt, what i need to know as i am new to rotary\'s is,are the rx8 engines any better to covert to a single turbo and will it mate straight to my gearbox and engine mounts. You can buy a 12000 mile unit for around £1500? which seems a good option if it can be used.
Regards
Craig

Not sure about the rx8 engines, havent heard of anyone doing that.
I think the best engine people are using for big power with single turbo\'s are the RE engine out of a Cosmo, because of the bigger inlet runners. Its possible to source one for around £1200 needing a rebuild and depending on porting and turbo used will get over 500fwhp.
Do you have any pics of your car sounds very interesting mate:3gears-lh

Plenty of comments about the Flames!!!!

Below is a pic of your car mate. I saw it at Pips too - very nice set up. I am pretty sure the last owner was around on this forum.

Anyway, the RX8 engine will not fit. There are too many complications such as the mounting of engine, your turbo\'s too etc will not fit.

Your best best is to have a 2 Rotor Engine (13B REW) from a RX7 or a Cosmo. Have it ported, maybe dowelled too then add a single turbo to that. Or it is also possible to have a 3 Rotor Engine (20B REW) fitted from a Cosmo in NA form producing circa 400hp and excellent for track or in turbo form producing anything from 650-800hp. Altough the 3 Rotor engine conversion is VERY expensive.

HTH :)

The car is already making 348 rwhp 410 flywheel? so i an happy with that at the moment, What i want to do is have a spare motor built up so i am not loosing out on track time (10 track days paid for in advance). If i am going to have a new one built i want a motor that is built for the track ie big hp.

400hp is pretty good  and it\'s always down to the driver/car set-up at the end of the day!.
If it\'s me, set up is the first priority!

A large streetported engine with decent size turbo will show 500 fly at relatively sensible boost (circa 1.1bar) and still show positive boost at sub 2k rpm and full at 4 -4.5k rpm. If it is a track car it could be bridge ported but I have no personal experience of one. I think a bridge port is hard to map for the road at lower revs but this may be very low on your priority list. I too was considering an 8 engine at some stage but the fact none of the bigger tuners have gone down this route sort of pre answered my question.

Bridgeport is an option but then you car will be very noisy and loud. Getting on to track could become a problem.

The car setup is to be honest spot on , i have AP six pot calipers on the front, federo racing pads all round, hks coilovers ,tein springs ,uprated anti rollbars ect ect ect...
I was at cadwell park a few weeks ago and was lapping in around 107sec.
It will take coppise @120 mph (no bullsxxt) in the dry.People don\'t realise how good these cars can handle when set up properly.

Dunno about that but they make a pretty annoying noise (improved with decent a/market cans) :D

We went to the Ring with about 10x S2000s a year or two back, they rev a long time and sound/feel fast - but ultimately get left a long way behind most FDs...

I got an \'06 S2000 and in comparison to my RX7 it feels much more planted in the bends. The suspension is not to stiff nor too soft, the damping on the \'06 model is suited perfectly to british B roads. I do agree that it has a lot less torque, you have to rev the nuts of it to go anywhere. However thats part of the fun..... 9K RPM limiter :) If another fast car drops a cog and gets their foot down before you there is no chance of catching it in a straight line. However in the bends on sticky bridgestones it catches back up.

I reckon a turbo / supercharger conversion on a S2000 would be amazing. Although I am not sure of the drive train could take it. I have only done 15,000 miles in mine and already its got drivetrain noises.

I was watching one of the Best Motoring video\'s the other day where they manage to destroy a gearbox (over reved it).  I really quite like the S2K and thought the handling of them was pretty dam good (I was a passanger that day though!)

Yeah I love the BMI\'s just cant get enough!

Think the only reason it went is cause he changed down too quick and it just went pop! (guess he still won as no one parked infront of him! :Giggle )
