Title: Un-required bits removal advice: EGR valve, air pump, etc.
Post by: Jono FD3 on February 10, 2007, 10:09:35 AM
Hi guys.... I\'m waiting on the studs to sort out my manifold at the moment, so I thought over the weekend I would remove anything that I don\'t need on the engine....   The air pump is history, thats been blanked off, but the pump hasn\'t been removed as yet because I need to sorce a shorter belt befor I remove the pump itself.

The other one is the EGR valve (Is this bulkheas side of the engine, top drivers side?) I have read somewhere that removing this improves the reliability of the engine???? also bumping up the power a little?? is this worth wile doing...... I\'m getting all this done before I put my apexi in so I dont have to aulter the base map & just get it maped once!!

Please advise on the above!! I have got a monster V-mount going in too & that will be done befor the mapping session:evillaugh Basicaly I\'m trying to get rid of any un-necesary bits that hinder performance & reliability, so if you can think of any other bits that arent required then please let me know what they are & where they are on the engine so I can bin them!!!

Cheers

I removed all of that, the egr bolts onto the lim and has to be removed if you want to fit an aftermarket secondary rail kit. Don\'t know about improving reliability but it will have an effect on your emissions as will removing the air pump. It depends on how far you want to go, there are lots of bits you can remove if you want but most have been put there for a reason. As for the shorter belt, I\'ve got one in my garage I used briefly to get my car running, I can post it out for a tenner if you want it in a hurry?

Do you have to get the manifold off or can you get at it with everything in situe??

Can you hold the belt for me mate...... got to do some planning for a tensioner, so I get enough belt sitting on the water pump as I dont want to go down the rought of underdrive pullies!!!

No problem, I took everything off my car when it was being done, but I think you should be able to do it in situe iirc as it\'s at the top of the lim beneath where the uim joins. 3 bolts and a blanking plate should do it. I made my own plate and found that the secondary kits usually come with them as part of the kit! Doh.

ACV????

What does it do & where is it???

Yep, EGR valves are present on 90% of cars!!! My hilux has got one & I have read that the rex\'s have to & removing them helps!!!

I thought it was only the US rx7\'s that have an EGR valve..All have an ACV which along with the air pump supplies air to the cat and exhaust inlet port.

The ACV can be removed as can the air pump,AWS, Dbl throttle, BAC valve..

The pipe from the cat is the EGR i thought.

Jono, ive used ebay underdrive pulleys (they are only a bit of metal after all...what can go wrong?) and a 6pk806 belt i think.  Its basically a 6 ribbed belt thats the smallest you can get in the 800mm+ series - ask in a motor factors.

This allows you to remove the air pump as its not needed. To remove the EGR stuff you have to decat the car really...

Ive bascially removed the air pump and cat and this has allowed me to blank off the ACV, all the pipes to the air pump, the EGR valve but the downshot of this is you really need a PFC and underdrive pulleys + new belt if you want ot do this.

EGR was only on the US cars. UK and Jap ones don\'t have the EGR.

Apologies... it was the acv I was chatting about!!!!

Bobfish...... don\'t worry, got a PFC & decat along with a few extra goodies;)
