Post by: Jono FD3 on February 09, 2007, 02:54:16 PM
Right then, I\'m just about to order some silicone pipe to do my rats nest next week...... What size & how much do I need...(Only doing the solenoids under the UIM at the moment!!)

3 meters of 3mm be enough for the job???

i think 3mm would make the air go too quickly through it causing problems?

not sure though mate, i had this dilemma

jesus what its peoples obsession with Viton. Im sorry grizzly, i dont mean to have a go at you but Viton is 3 times the price of silicon (at least, its £10 a meter i think and silicon is £5 for 3 meters) and silicon lasts at least 3 years without issue so why use viton?

4mm is a bit too big IMO. You can use the 3mm without issue. I have done on 4 cars now for the rats nest piping without problems, oyu dont even need to cable tie it on as it fits quite snugly.

Heres what i ordered from rally design when i did my last car, i still have some 3mm spare although not sure how much:

1 x 4mm Vacuum Tubing (3m Pack) £5.70
3 x 3mm Vacuum Tubing (3m Pack) £16.20
1 x 6.3mm Vacuum Tubing (3m Pack) £8.10
1 x 8mm Vacuum Tubing (3m Pack) £11.70

You will need SOME 4mm stuff. There are pipes of about 5 different sizes in the car...depends what your reacing, the solenoid lines are a different size to the lines that go down to the exhaust gas control actuator, which are a different size to the lines that go to your wastegate controls again, which are in turn a different size to the stuff that goes from your oil filler neck...

From past experiance Samco vac Hose is realy poor when you get it hot and put vacuum through it is colapses, plus the Viton hose realy does stay put (i\'ve not had it blow off unlike silicon)

Me personaly, i like to do jobs once and i am not into pritty colours and Chaving cars up so Black Viton hose suits me well cheers.

But hey thats my Opinion, but then i also belive that standard Rubber hose is better than Silicon (and cheaper) if Mazda used it 10 years ago and its only just starting to go hard and crack with the Heat/Age whats wrong with that??

All good points grizzly, but all i can say is ive used samco silicon on 4 cars now, one of which has been round the nurburgring several times (constant caning! lol)

I have never had a vac hose pop off (i use 3mm rather than 4, 3mm is a very snug fit) and i dont even cable tie them.

You can get samco in black, mine is! (some of it anyway)

Also, i have no boost problems with my car at all. perfect 10-8-10 all the time so i dont think my hose is collapsing.

I admit the last time i used/had a problem with it was on a Cosworth running 1.5 bar of boost, but i went through a stage of eery other car i saw having some sort of problem with the Pipe (o by the way i worked for a big name tuner ;) but was about 5 years ago now)
