Title: Recomendations
Post by: RX7 R2 on February 07, 2007, 07:55:16 PM
Right, bit of a long one so please bear with me. I\'ve spent the last 2-3 hours searching old threads and got lots of useful info but want to confirm and get upto date recomendations.

While away, with best interests at heart my dad started and left my FD running for a short time. When I returned home as you\'ve probably guessed it had flooded so jacked her up and removed the spark plugs. :2Confused

While doing this I have decided to give it a full service seems every other time I look at doing this I end up going out driving for a couple of hours instead.

So where to start?
Cars spec, 95 Type R2 with a cat back exhaust but no other mods that I\'m aware of. Only thing wrong with the car is it appears to be over fueling for some reason, low mpg and exhaust becomes black within minutes.

Car is currently used only on the road but I am hoping in the very near future to experience a track day.

OK, the plans are as follows,

Spark plugs:- The ones I took out are marked only with NGK R and 10 on the porcaline. Never had a problem with these but it would appear that most people are runing 9\'s?? Can anyone tell me the difference/benefits of each?

Anti freeze:- Is there only 1 drain plug?
Going to empty, fill with distilled water run for 5 mins, re-empty and fill with 50/50 distilled water and antifreeze as recommended on an old post. Also mentions to use Ethalene Glycol anti freeze as it\'s specifically designed for use with aluminium?? Again anyone any suggestions or anyone done this and faced any problems.

Brakes:- fluid will be flushed and replaced all using DOT 4. Can anyone recommend a good quality type.

Discs and pads all round, a lot of people mention that they have ordered Black Diamond which upon reading would be my choice but nobody seems to have commented on them once fitted. Any feed back on these or other brakes appreciated.

Belts:- Going to change both belts, one which runs the alternator and air con, the other I\'m not sure what it runs but it\'s def ready for changin\'. I was just going to replace with standard belt. Are these straight forward? Anyone encountered any difficulities?

Gear box and rear diff oil are to be replaced. Again can anyone reccomend a grade, good quality oil to use etc?

Fuel filter is to be replaced. Can anyone point me to it\'s location and again advise on a good quality one?

Air filter, unsure at this time as I might just push the boat out and get myself an induction kit.

Oh yeh and the engine oil and filter as normal. What oil do people recommend, I know it\'s a big debate.

All help, recommendations and feed back is greatly appreciated. Also if anyone see\'s anything which I have missed please let me know.:Thumbsup!

For the spark plugs, the number dictates how cold the plug is starting from 7 upto 11 (coldest). You only really need 9\'s all round if you\'re not running high boost. The colder plugs from 10 onwards are really for people running higher boost (0.9 bar +). Also the colder plugs will foul a lot quicker when the car is idling or standstill, which can result in flooding more quickly.

Kash,

Thanks for taking the time to read it, I know it\'s a bit of a long one. :D

Could running these plugs be the cause of the car becoming \'choked\' up and stalling easily in towns and cities??

I use 9\'s in my standard car, never flooded, does not pop or bang,  i change them from the top,  i don\'t do from underneath the car as i find that more difficult, the right spanner helps! as for the cooling system and draining it there is a drain bolt for the rotor housing below the front plugs, just above the sump, i removed this also from above, however it is a short drain plug going into alloy housing and it would be easy to overtighten this and strip the thread in the housing! but this and the rad drain will completely drain the system. as for brake pads i have just fitted Mintex Extreme Pads from Shy-auto, only done the front so far but the difference to what was on the car before is very impressive!

Have choice of road or track pads with Black Diamond, not tried track pads but dont use there road pads on track.

Stock air box is very good and quite often better performance than induction kits.

Black Diamond Discs I have used on an RX7 & on a MR2 Turbo with POOR results I have managed to warp 3 sets of discs and I got bad heat fade from them also, it was not the pads. It might just be the way I drive but when I changed them for AP discs the problem disappeared straight away it did not matter how I abused my brakes the were always spot on.
I would also recommend that you stay away from “Green Stuff” pad as I have never got on with these, always found them to be too abrasive and fade too quickly . hope this might help.

You could also try some 3G grooved and dimpled discs and some redstuff pads seems to work quite well with other cars so no reason not to with the rex

The plugs could well be the cause, the colder the plug the more easily it gets fouled especially in traffic

My mate also had these on his MR2 and exactly the same happened... I\'ve always stayed clear since hearing that...

ro284/hugo/gatesy/goldk28611-Cheers for all the advice. I\'ll do some more digging on all the brakes suggested.

Aide Moore-The belts would be much appriciated. I can\'t pm so if you could drop me an e-mail on craig-chidlow@hotmail.co.uk I\'ll sort some money out for you.

Rotaryart-Thanks for the links, I\'ll be giving you a call some time soon.
