Title: Hi - another new potential owner?
Post by: BUG4LIFE on February 07, 2007, 08:51:19 AM
Hi guys how you doing? I seen an amazing RX7 for sale, right on my door step, that I\'m now trying to figure out how the hell I can buy!!! :D

Just doing some research at the moment - as it would be my main and only car [so it would have to work on mornings like this!!!]. Is it ok if I drop a bunch of [probley boring] questions for you guys to answer for me?

Cheers :Thumbsup!

Ricco 04 - I been trying to get hold of you for a bit, but I cant send PM on here or the Worc Jap site. I just wanted to ask about owning an RX7 in Worc [as I live here to] and as you a year younger than me, who you insure your RX with etc. Plus I think you know of the car I seen for sale?

Cheers guys.

No I don\'t think the potential car is owned by a member on here, but I\'m sure it will be sold before I get myself sorted etc [as I\'d have to sell my Mk2 Golf 16v GTI]. But I\'ll regret doing nothing, thus at least I know I\'ve tried!

My main worry would be the reliability of RX7s. I\'ve been told a well looked after car should be fine, but I know my current Golf will go on forever [touch wood] and will always start on freezing mornings like this! Is an RX7 a good idea as an everyday commuter car? I only drive about 10miles-a-day to work and back, through traffic, though I\'m not really worried about fuel costs as every high performance car will be the same [and I was only get 22mpg out of my now sold E30 BMW 325 cab].

I\'m 6\' 6", have I actually got any chance of fitting in an RX to begin with [the answer to this could end any hope of getting the car couldn\'t it]?

When it comes to servicing etc, who\'s the best [I know Dragon are top people, but they 2hrs from where I live]?

I will have more questions, but I\'ll have a search through the site first, see what I can learn. Cheers for your help though.

I\'m with A-Plan for my Golf, so yeah I\'ll give them a go for a price on an RX [I had heard they good for Jap imports].

hi mate - welcome to MRC.

ok its not worth using the rx for that amount of miles - you have to sit there ten minutes every morning and if its cold even longer waiting for it to warm up! you will be worried when it comes to fuel costs these cars do 15mpg! LOL on the motorway tho - they not so bad.

Im 6\'2" and i have my seat all the way back and me knees barely touch the steering wheel - i have had to  buy a D shape and a boss kit with a spacer this should allow me plenty of room - but 6\'6"!!!!! might be a squeeze for you.

Ive had mine for a year and its only ever let me down once and that was something stupidly easy to fix. however there are people on here who seem to have trouble every other week but owning an RX isnt as bad as owning a peugeot so dont worry too much.

Servicing - i do myself - changing the oil n plugs isnt that difficult and the jobs i cant do i take to a friend whos a chief mech for jag.

I got a blinding deal from elephant try them as well mate.

we got a FAQ somewhere on this site - best off reading all that lot in there.

6\'6"...hhhmmmmm you might struggle in all honestly (they are made for little japanese people)  best try one for size.

on average i get 13.5mpg on shorter journeys and in traffic.  (i am single tubby though).  but still in traffic i would think it would be less that 22mpg from a your previous car.

serviceing places.  there are plenty around i wouldnt really worry about that, reworx, rotechnics, wgt, dragon.  it is down to preference i travel about 200miles to wgt because i want to, not cause it is my closest specialists (my closest is 35 miles away).

general running cost are quite high.  you wanna change oil and filter every 3000miles etc.

if you have a good car, there is no reason it should be unreliable.  most people not all (myself included) run them as a second car, or at least have a cheap run about to do millage in etc.

if you run the rex, it is best to make sure it gets fully up to temp etc, so if you are just going to be doing a 10mile stint to and from work in it, then the engine might not like you for it.

all in all, it is a wicked car.  (almost a whole experience)  but dont buy one of the cheap imports that have not had a engine rebuild........as it it really will cost you a lot of money in the long run.  (i did, and have spent rediculoius money on, well over 500% what i bought it for).
you say this one is not off a member, my advice would be to look in the forsale section as most of the cars on here you know will have been looked after etc.  would also recomend one that has had a recent rebuild (preferably by a specialist)

Cheers for all the info, this is really helping.

Yeah, don\'t like the idea of having to let the car idle for 10mins before driving it [a guy down the road does that with his FTO]. In my Golf I just hop in and I\'m off - though of course still let the car warm through before giving it full beans. So what your saying, is that an RX7 aint really a car you can use on a short daily commute - like you would in an M3, Impreza etc? Although I would make sure I gave the car a weekly blast to clear it\'s lungs :Giggle

I\'ve just been reading a bunch of posts about rebuilds blowing-up after less then 10k miles, and general problems - all scary stuff to tell the truth :2eek

I may as well tell you a little about the car I got my eye on - it\'s a 2001 RB-S with only 10.5k miles on the clock. Imported brand-new and serviced by Mazda dealers [which may not be a good thing - though I\'ll find out which dealer it was]. I\'d still need a full checking over of the car by an expert I reckon - WGT seem to be well recommended on here and get a compression test done etc.

I wasn\'t really looking for a new car [as I\'ve just bought my first house], but when I saw this car - on my door-step to - I thought can I really let a late, low-mile dream car slip through my fingers without at least seeing what I can do to get it [although if I don\'t fit in it, being so tall, I guess the dream gonna end there?!?!] :p

I use my FD as a daily drive. I usually make the drive to work about 15 minutes long and don\'t leave it standing to warm up as I\'ve read it\'s not very good. Better to drive it gently for 10-15 minutes so everything warms up together. Just give it a good blast once a week and I think you\'ll be fine.

I recommend Sky Insurance or A-Plan as they both gave me good quotes this year.

Aaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh - hold on I\'ll just post it here (I love my brain! :rollin )

------------------

I\'m insured through Admiral who where £700 better than the next best!!!!  Elephant is their online company so you may also want to try them.  Mine is a UK car so cheaper to insure but as long as it\'s a standard car, not modified, not parked on road and you limit the miles then these will all be in your favour (but you know this anyway!)

I always advise anyone to sit down with the yellow pages for 2 hours and just phone every companh.  Wright each company down alog with the telephone number and quotation (inc excess)  Then pick the best one - its usually down to 3 companies.

My journey to work is about 10 mins.  The car has always reached opperating temperature in that time and "touch wood" I have had no problems in neally 3 years.  This is used in summer, wet months and winter.  If you are sensible with the car then it will love you for it.  Any car will be a handfull on ice as im sure you are well aware.  I drive to work off boost and once a week im in the car long enough to help it clear it\'s lungs.

Serviceing is important - get it done.  Oil as you say every 3000 miles and plugs need doing every 6,000 (some leave it longer but if you know how to do them and can get them then for a few hours on an afternoon you can do the oil change and plugs yourself.

I have never seen the car before but I would also be interested in seeing it anyway.  At £17,000 its a "little" too far out of my price range.

If the owner did concent to taking it up to WGT with you then Pip will know what to do as im sure he has done this exact thing time and again.  He will most likely compression test the engine, pressure test the coolant system, preform a sniffer test etc etc.  It will cost you money but it is another piece of mind and a small snip of the £17,000 asking price.  (I always use WGT for any work I can\'t do - I personally would not reccomend a Mazda Dealership  The next closest is Carl Hayward)

As for fitting in the car I guess the only way to find out is to try getting in one.  Where abouts in the country are you?

Ricco

Worcester mate. I live in St Peters, just off junc7 of the M5! Yeah I\'ll try getting hold of Pip over the weekend, get his thoughts.

Cheers for all the advice Ricco, it\'s so helping me form a knowledge of RX7 ownership.

No worries, you can ask anyone on the MRC as they are all very helpfull - I know they have been very helpfull to me :Thumbs-up

Well when the snow goes away (its been snowing for 5 hours here now!) we will have to get a quick local rex meet (as wanted to do that anyway) and you can try for size!  :Thumbsup!

Hi Bug4Life

Welcome to the forum

I use my 96 Rx as a daily driver in all weathers including leaving it at airports for 3 days at a time and have no problems.  I mostly drive in London and put in around 6k miles a year.

Car starts every time…get your self an aftermarket temp gauge.  The stock one is rubbish.
You will be able to exactly know when the car is worm and ready to drive off

I am not sure about a 10min warm up, but a 5min will probably do..

Regards
Michaelb

Just had an interesting chat with an RX specialist about the prospect of owning an RX7 and using it as my commute car - and he said the car will do it, though not really enjoy it! He mentioned the car constantly being driven on the choke [not good] and even driving the car for an extended journey once a week may not be enough - even going as far as saying my 5 mile, 20 minute trip to work in stop/start traffic would actually cause the engine damage :eek

His surgestion of a second run-around car does make sense [I could keep my Mk2 16v GTI and get a bigger loan for the RX], but then I\'d hardly use the Rex - I\'d wanna use it all the time, as even a short journey would be an event in such a legend.

So if driving it every day to work, plus a big run every week isnt good for it what the hell are you meant to do with these cars? Look at them?
Title: Hi - another new potential owner?
Post by: Carl on February 15, 2007, 05:27:35 PM
These cars are fine as a daily user.
In fact I think they are much the better for it,than only having one as a weekend car.
I am not sure that I agree that a 5 mile commute is no good either.
You just need to keep up the maintenance on them and a run at weekends would be good from time to time too.
Regards
Carl

If I was still living with my parents; 20 miles from my work over some nice B-roads, that would be perfect for RX driving [though the fuel bills would be huge]. I think he meant the short stop/start trip I now have to take aint ideal - I could take the long way home though, down the by-passes, or to the nearest Shell garage?

Good to speak to you guys though - and get opinions like Carl there.
