Title: Beg to Diff?
Post by: dryvern on February 06, 2007, 06:15:06 PM
I have had a bothersome grinding noise awhile now & often trawl the forums for clues (1993 twin import). Now I throw this query out incase anyone can help:

A buzzing grinding noise (not very long). It happens only on a good launch or accelerating around islands (lower speed).

First thought was diff or exhaust. Indeed an occasional knocking was resolved when a mid pipe muffler was put on the exhaust; finally found out that the exhaust was moving back n up.

Did think about suspension (main pillar balls replaced), BUT..there is oil again around the right hand diff side i.e. drive seal on the diff. The same seal was replaced a couple of months ago (still sounded same).
Oil level in diff is just above bottom plug (seems to stay this way).
Two thoughts given were, oil is comming out a breather above the diff & lower level causing noise (never seen a breather & the mechanic can\'t see one too)...or...using a heavier race diff oil as an option (has cured similiar prob on a BMW race car....cost around £100).

The noise is not mad or continual, so before I go mad again & throw more money towards solving another mysterious niggle, I was hoping someone may have a similiar experience or some idea.

Any help/info would be greatly welcome...cheers.

I\'ve got a noise in low revs in 2nd and 3rd gears - Rotechniks advised that it is a gearbox whine.

check your wheel bearings, they will usually make a noise round corners, and quieten when straightening up and pressure comes off them.

Sounds like you have a Rob type problem, gearbox.

May be an idea to drop the oil and see if you get any swarf or debris out.

You may even find that an oil change shuts it up for a while

Cheers guys. Dropped out of sight for a couple of days when the weather hit (still waiting for local motorsport guy to compression test/do it myself - to find out if tip gone).

Interesting, oil change a good idea. Still reackon diff prob (will check box for swarf). I first thought wheel bearings (even though a grinding noise) but am assured it is not (will check again).

I\'ll let you know (if all sorted soon - this month)

Well, I  had the locking diff put in by Reworx (good lot) & clunking like a sod, shaking to bugger when warm even at 20mph...sorted some Redline anti shock gear oil...should sort it out!
