Title: Massive dilemma
Post by: JohnnyP on February 06, 2007, 10:03:27 AM
Some impartial advice needed:3Confused

About to take the plunge and buy my first rex but can\'t decide between a 1994 Type R2 standard except for a catback exhaust - only 7000 miles from new!!!

or

a 1995 Type RZ standard except for massive HKS catback (even has the seats!!), 85000 miles but fresh rebuild in september and 7 months warranty!

The R2 smells like new and the RZ is in good nick and rare - both very cheap - aaargh really can\'t decide:confused:

My heart says the R2 for its low mileage and condition, my head says the RZ for rarity and rebuild. Used to be indecisive, now I\'m not so sure!

That R2 sounds like a good buy, but I would still recommend a compression check just to be sure its genuine.

Is that because of the mileage or you don\'t like the RZ?

The car is in Colchester miles from a specialist so a compression test is a real hassle. It started first time from cold and hot and has no major mods - tempted to take a chance:2Rolleyes

If only I could, could easily make a 1000 pound profit on each even at this time of year!

Low miles seems a good one to go for, but beware you still have no idea how well it has been looked after, or if the cooling system has had any corrosion inhibitor in, it is a 12 year old car, and it is corrosion that took mine out, the front cast iron plate rusted through to the water seal, although mechanically the engine would have gone on for a few thousand, personally i would go for the rebuild every time, or buy a car that needs a rebuild, which is what i did, low miles don\'t always mean years of hassle free motoring! also i would prefer a type X!
Good luck

mileage wise tbh, if what others have said about corrosion factors etc arent an issue then i would go with it whereas the rz is a rarer car  but the wear and tear on other compnents etc would put me off.

and just in my opinion i would try to find some possible way to compression test it before buying otherwise it could be alot of heartache, maybe take one of the boys off here if they are willing and use a piston comp tester even if you\'re buying the rz.

does the rz have the rebuild paperwork etc?

I know what you\'re saying. I\'ve been looking for months for an affordable good one and now 2 come up at once. I\'m leaning towards the RZ because of rebuild and warranty (RX Motors) and slightly cheaper. Is the RZ not as exclusive as I thought? Has the carbon seats, passenger foot plate, bbs alloys etc. I will let you know which I decide on as someone should snap up the other one quickly.

I\'ve spoke with RX Motors today and they confirmed it was a full rebuild in september (£4000) new housings etc. Are you thinking of suspension, drive train, electrics wear and tear of a 85k car? The cars paperwork from the previous owner doesn\'t show any major work apart from services. Still can\'t decide:Hammer

well if the suspension and steering components etc are ok and the bodywork and interior is ok then go with it as it is what you want, its cheaper and rx motors know it so i am sure it fine.

i guess im just attracted to danger but i would have the low mileage one tried and tested and get BITMA to confirm the mileage via auction records then buy that one.

im not very good at advice am i :Hammer

Rx Motors rebuild! Brilliant, you won\'t get better than that,  i know that would be the one i would go for,

The problem with corrosion m4drx, is that you don\'t know it\'s there! untill it starts  losing water! there is no way of checking for rust due to lack of inhibitor/antifreeze,other than strip it! whereas the one built by RX motors would be thouroughly checked and have all new parts fitted if needed,

be sure its an RZ too and are they manual or auto?

I\'d go for the rebuilt RZ. They probably will have replaced a few other little things like hoses and the like and it is a well respected tuner

..and it\'s the RZ!!!

if its the black one with the chopped vielside front end isnt that just a new engine 4k ago?

RZ with a rebuild & warranty would be my choice even though mileage on clock higher, mines a 93 RZ but only 45000 on the clock no rebuild but last february compression test was 8.4 fronts and 8.3 rears, i believe 300 type RZ\'s were made

It\'s a black manual RZ. I\'ve checked the sticker on the drivers door sill. The seller just wants to get rid and doesn\'t know much about rx\'s. I haven\'t mentioned prices because I don\'t want any sellers on here to cry! The R2 has japanese rubber and there is no alarm or stereo, so thats £1000 extra. Right, the RZ it is, but 7000 miles, the interior is soo new!!

If it has the carbon seats, the foot rest, the BBS alloys.
RZs are all manual
should have Bilstein shocks

There were a limited number of RZs built in each year they were produced whereas the R2 wasn\'t a limited edition

Deposit made on the RZ.

Difficult choice but the recent rebuild and new clutch swayed it. Collect her on saturday. First thing is replace the oil drum exhaust with something quieter and get her an Apexi pfc and remap.

M4DRX, if you\'re interested the R2 was on ebay (the buyer pulled out due to no V5, but the car has a trade V5 and seller is getting one). It\'s the silver one with white alloys, search in completed items.

Thanks for all your help guys, I\'m sure I will be back soon.:WaveBye

Good choice, enjoy her but watch the roads on RWD in these weather conditions - a few have been bitten with 2nd turbo kicking in & back end biting their ass.
power fc/remap excellent start to emptying your wallet, wise move.I found the bilsteins too hard a drive & changed to tein superstreets - bit of a softy realy

A local Mazda dealership should have the equipment to do the comp test - same gear as for the RX-8...

Picked up the RZ this morning, been smiling ever since:D

Bit wet today so was very careful, but she certainly has some poke!

The only downside so far is after months of reading on this forum I seem to have developed a bad case of rx paranoia!! Is that noise normal, what\'s that sound, please start, is the oil pressure normal etc etc.!! I\'m going to have her fully checked out by a specialist to put my mind at rest and then get used to her little quirks! Anyone else suffer from this??

I think everyone is like that due to the stigma surrounding the rx7 from people who know nothing about them let alone own one.

i very much agree but im sure everyone can agree that the when they are right they really are right but when wrong can be very long winded and agrivating.

I know exactly how you feel with the paranoid bit!  If even the smallest thing goes wrong im rumaging through the workshop manual or panicking on the forum!

Still, its a learning curve ;)

Enjoy! :)

I think you made the correct Choice, I have an R2 and if a RZ with a rebuild had come up at the time i would have ripped there arm off.
