Title: Potential Rex owner :)
Post by: Epiphany on February 05, 2007, 02:57:49 PM
Hey there,

I\'m currently considering a swap for a 1993 Single Turbo rex.
Infact its for Mr J.T\'s old car.

I currently drive a Black (Fastest colour) 2004 facelift Civic Type-R.

I\'m after some advice really. The CTR engine is designed to run at 8000rpm and i\'ve heard rumours that if you don\'t vTEC every day it turns into a potato ;) How does an RX7 engine compare to this. Is it a case of stay away from the redline or is it also a free revving engine that likes to be pushed?

Also, can someone give me an idea of yearly running costs please? I\'ll be doing about 4000miles a year as i\'ll get a second diesel for the daily commute. I\'m aware that oil and filters need to be changed every 3000 miles (probably 2000). How much should this cost?
How often do plugs need changing and how much do they cost?
How long do tyre\'s tend to last (when you\'re not on track days or santa pod) and does anyone know the life span of Diamond Black Drilled and Grooved brake discs?

Does anyone have any contact details for Mr J.T? I was going to PM him and ask him a few questions, but I just found out i can\'t :3Confused

Thanks in advance!

I can answer a few but others will post too :) I don\'t tend to do costs per year but...

A tank of Tesco 99 RON normally costs around £50-£60 and can get up to 250/300 miles depending on driving.
Filter is about £6 and oil can be as little as £15 for 5 litres
Plugs I\'d go to the US, they\'re $7 (about £3.75) each but over here you can pay £11+VAT each.

I\'ll leave the rest to others :) Just keep up with maintenance and you\'ll be fine....also change the fuel filter as often as required as well.

hiya not sure if i can answer all the questions - but will try

1 - rev the nuts off it - they like it :D - infact its recommended to red line it a few times a journey just to stop carbon build up in the engine ( in fact - its pretty hard not to red line it - you will know what i mean once you drive it !!!!! )
2 - 4000 miles a year - est at 18 MPG - this will give you a petrol cost
3 - Oil - i use Mineral oil and change the filter every time - cost is about £20
4 - tyres - errr pass - never changed mine - suppose it depends on compound of the trye and if you like to "light them up " a lot !!
5 - discs - again - depends on your driving style

hope this helps partially

Stu

Thanks guys :)
What sort of mechanical reliability do you get?
The car is heavily modded and running 447whp, so while the parts are new and less likely to fail, if they do it\'ll be costly :/

Also, regarding insurance, how anal are most companies with mods. As its hard to actually figure out what mods produce what gains and what needs declaring. Are they likely to blag their way out of a claim at the slightest sign of an undeclared mod?

A-plan seem to like rex\'s, even if you have a few mods.

I found them to be competitive, haven\'t got the number handy sorry!

Quote from: Epiphany447whp,
it makes quite a difference when you put the correct prefix infront of that, so dont get fooled.  FWHP (flywheel), RWHP (rearwheel).

remembering Mr J.Ts car i am pretty sure that figure is FWHP.  i might be wrong but pretty sure i am right.
