Title: coolant filler cap
Post by: woody on February 03, 2007, 01:30:18 PM
on the left hand side of the engine is a plastic cap that reads coolant only. this is topped up to the required level. the second cap in from the right is a pressure cap marked filler cap. when i open this ther appears to be no fluid in it. should this be topped up. if so what with? as my add coolant light keep buzzing at me even though the actual coolant cap reads full.     generation 3 rx.  thanks lee

The LHS is the overflow tank which you don\'t fill up...

Hi Lee,

There is a cap next to the alternator, fill to the top here with coolant.

I see your based in Poole as well, is this a recent purchase?

As has been said.
Fill the coolant up via the Filler Cap (next to alternator).
See if when this is full your add coolant light comes on.
If so take off both AST (attactched to intercooler) and Filler Cap and again fill filler cap until both the AST and Filler Cap is full.
Check if buzzer comes on (it shouldn\'t now as full)
When you have been for a drive if it then comes on.
Wait untill cool (don\'t want to burn yourself) and take off both caps again.
If AST is empty and the Overflow is full (by drivers headight with plastic cap and dipstick) then chances are that your AST cap valve is knackered and you will need a new cap.
Of course you could try bleeding the system aswell to make sure there is not a load of trapped air inside.
HTH and try for now.

My god in heaven. Doesn\'t anyone do any research before buying a car these days? No wonder the RX7\'s got a bad rep, I wonder how many are rolling around with no coolant in the engine? Course it\'s always the cars fault when the engine dies.

Do you not agree with my advice then or talking about original question?
Cheers

Sorry mate, wasn\'t referring to your advice. I\'m just having a gimp about the number of threads I\'ve seen with people staying stuff like "I\'ve filled up the engine at the filler by the headlight, but my coolant buzzer keeps going off, what\'s going on?". It\'s small wonder that the Rex has a bad rep for reliability when an alarming number of peeps don\'t seem to know the most basic (and vital) things like where to top up the engine coolant. With the vast wealth of rotary knowledge freely available on the net there\'s no excuse.

Yeah no worries,:Thumbsup!
The problem I found is that the Manual tells you to check the overflow tank and then fill up to F mark on dipstick so you do that and it doesn\'t work!
This is where the  confusion comes in hence this question.
It is the sort of thing that unless you come across it maybe it wouldn\'t even occur to you. Must admit when I was checking my levels I popped on here and did a search which helped out big time.
But as most buyers (well me :) )research into how to look after the car and that it needs oil and filter as often as possible, and too keep as cool as possible etc but you wouldn\'t really research how to do this until you came to do it would you?

At the end of the day someone who is new to these cars and needs advice should be able to do so on this site without fear of being flamed for not already knowing. I would have thought then that it is our job to offer the best advice we can so that their car gives them miles of fun and gives the car the great name it deserves :Thumbs-up

Just my 2p worth anyway. We were all new once and will always be learning new things about these cars :Typing
Sorry for slight thead hijack woody. Try out advice and let us know how you get on. :D
Cheers
Eddie

firstly i never said i filled it up at the cap by the headlight. i said it is topped up to the full mark. i have been checking the level of the coolant using this dipstick as it does say on the cap coolant only, and i am only used to having a car with one coolant cap. with the temperature guage never reading to hot, i have no reason to think anything is the matter untill the coolant buzzer comes on , which was yesterday. I am now using the imformation that is readily available on the internet to solve this problem, thus causing no damage to the engine.
if you were more constructive in your comments and helped people out with there questions, no matter how dumb they are. then maybe rxs would not have a bad rep because people will now what to with them !
To the other people who have replied possitively. thanks.
i have now topped up the filler pressure cap, but this only took about half a cup full. i will follow other instructions to see if i can solve the problem.

Welcome to the club Woody, and ditto what Eddie posted, if you need any info on these cars, whatever it is post it up here, this is the best place to find it, and what the site is for, but be warned it can be a bit addictive on here,  before you know it you will be helping out others with a similar problem, if all else fails i\'m not far from you if you get stuck, there are a few club members in our area,
Cheers Bob

Woody, just making sure - the pressure cap should be on the tank on the passenger side of the engine. The cap in the middle is not a pressure cap.

Well, I for one have had enough of being \'constructive\', there\'s only so many times you can answer the same question before it becomes trying....especially when there\'s tens of threads on the same topic available simply by clicking the \'search\' button. Rant over. Ladies and Gentlemen I bid you adieu.

by the way the temperature gauge is a load of crap, only ever goes to half way, you will prob only eva see it go over half way when your enigne has blown, useful!!!  This is a common thing with all 3rd Gen rx7\'s, it might be a good idea to get a aftermarket temp gauge  (//www.gaugeplace.co.uk theres a few on here that are quite cheap) or the more expensive route, a apexi power FC with a commander which gives you a digital reading of your tempature, i couldnt do without it now.  If you didnt know, an Apexi Power FC is a whole replacement ECU and is a very very good mod, and a commander is a hand held unit which can be used to map the ecu and also can display engine stats such as knock level, boost level, injector duty, water temp, air temp etc.  Even if you just have a standard engine can have it mapped to give you a little power gain and have the car run better, can have it mapped for UK fuel and also you can change the temperature that the radiator fans kick in.

You can usually pick up a Power FC and Commander for between £400-£600, ebay is a good place to look or try one of the tuners on here, got to make sure you get the right one thou, theres a different one for 1992-1996, 1996+, and i think there is one for sometihng like 1999+ but cant quite remember.  This is a very good price for the benefit you get, and seeing that a few years ago they cost alot more than this.

When it comes to getting it fitted and mapped everyone on here prefers different tuners so dont ask whos the best or you will start a argument lol its best to go for someone near you. i.e. Dragon @ Exeter, RX Motors @ Blandford, Re:Worx @ Portsmouth.
