Title: Modified FD steering rack
Post by: Initial-D on February 03, 2007, 12:49:08 PM
Been having thoughts about whather there is a modified steering rack so the steering wheel would require less turns to go from lock to lock. Anyone got any suggestions? Would I need to lose he power steering if I did this?

All you would need to do is find someone who could change the ratio.

I thought about this as well, but to be honest it really is fine.  Ive driven cars that have 1 3/4 lock to lock and it is so skitish out on track.  The rack in the rex seems to be a good compromise.

The big key to making changes to a track/race car is get a good base setting then make singular changes...otherwise it is difficult to know what has improved and what hasnt.

I have a 1 & 3/4 lock to lock on the Westie.  For up to 70mph it\'s fine, anything over then it starts to get silly.  Try that with a bumpy and uneven road and it gets scary - the car and you bumps around and you move the steering wheel around inadvertainly.  Must look strange from who\'s following! :D

if you want the steering response to feel sharper just fit a smaller diameter wheel. The steering on the RX feels pretty good though- from what I\'ve experienced! Which is limited.

Im replacing my trackrod ends with rose joints, hopefully give a little bit more direct feeling. Cant tell you yet tho as the car hasn\'t got a engine in it.

But as above, a small good quality wheel makes a hell of a difference, MOMO always feel best for me.

Well I have a 320mm Momo wheel so can\'t be that lol!!
Mainly for drift as it\'s less turns lock to lock but now thinking about more high speed stuff it does sound a bit dodgy! I may well have a go with the trackrod ends as it increases the turn angle (assuming the wheels won\'t rub on the inner fenders)! Easier to swap back too!
