I\'m going to be chainging the clutch on my rex this weekend, but there are 2 questions I have to ask:
1. How heavy is the box...... can 1 person remove it or is it a 2 man job??
2. Is it the piolet bairing...... the small roller bairing (think it sits in the e shaft??) how do you remove it??? brute force or is there a proper way to pull it out??? as I have a new one to put in, or shouldn\'t I bother chainging it??
Cheers guys
Jono
the bearing comes out easy all you have to do is push the lock flange in and then pull the bearing.
the box is gonn abe heavy dude - but not too heavy for a trolly jack with a piece of wood to support it.
edit: theres a metal ring on the inside that you need to straighen up again and make it nice n tight around the tabs this will ensure the bearing doesnt go flying off.

There is a proper extraction tool for the pilot bearing Jono but it can be removed by brute force if need be. As for the gearbox i take them in and out myself without the use of a trolley jack, just depends how many weetabix you\'ve had. If your not sure you can do it then trolley jack is a safer option.

yeah kev - but you are a big bloke - and have the advantage of a dirty great big pit to work in :D
The box is not light, i have taken one out on my own but putting back i\'d have someone on standby.
The Pilot bearing is a little GIT!! they are realy easy to distroy but a pani in the rear to get out of the e-shaft, The proper tool makes it alot easyer.
I would say if the Pilot bearing is not damaged just grease it up and refit the box, they are not nice to replace on the car.
i have just had the pleasure of doing both on my car, The pilot bearing is a bitch, but if you dont know how old it is then i would say go to the effort of replacing it. You can collapse it inwards and comes out ok. When mine died it killed the gear box so IMO its worth changing as you have one.
As for the gearbox. You can do it on your own, i put mine back at the weekend and still have the injuries to show for it. They are quite heavy but you should manage it, the hard part is getting the back end of the box supported once you have the spline in. That was the point when i dropped it on my nose. (yes it did bloody hurt!) when i got back from A&E my cousin helped me and it took 5 minutes! Are you draining the oil. If you dont know when its been changed, i would advise draining it and putting new in when you put the box back, it solves the problems of the oil coming out of the rear bearing when you remove the prop. Otherwise its just something else to worry about. (yes i got covered in oil too)
antnicuk, that nose job sounds painfull mate, bet you had a shiner the next day!! Mine will probably drop 3 foot & smash a toe or something, just to p!ss me off a little!!!
Cool..... smash the bairing up (I\'m good at breaking things) I was going to chainge the oil in the box while I was under there aswell so I\'ll drop that befor I remove the box!!! What oil would you guys recomend to put in????
Going to be doing a service aswell, but that side of things is all under controle!!!
