Title: Ally bonnets
Post by: Brett on February 02, 2007, 10:09:50 AM
Having seen the wanted thread etc, its got me thinking.

What cars actually came with ally bonnets?

For example:-

My 1989 Egi had a steel bonnet.
My 1988 Egi had an Aluminium bonnet.
My 1991 Turbo II had a steel bonnet.

UK Cabriolets had aluminium bonnets, I think the JDM ones do too.   Infini IV\'s had ally bonnets to I think?

So, whats the pattern here?  I was very suprised to find my \'88 egi had an ally bonnet....  :wave :xconfused

Yep EGI\'s are alloy but if you want the T2 scoop you need to find a vert bonnet, there always seems to be cars breaking on e-bay you just need to be quick of the mark when they show up.

They are getting very rare!! i sold one a few months ago for over £400 on E-bay.

Er... I think Lynn\'s is steel.
Maybe its the earlier Egis that had Ally bonnents?

ha ha ha failing that - i might bebale to get a T2 alloy bonnet that needs some work

cut out scoop - weld in plate - filler - smooth - spray - one alloy non scoop bonnet :D - might even add some reverse vents for the removal of hot air :D

ally bonnet, noooo!!,
Make one out of glass fiblie( spelling?) eg wax polish the bonnet, lay the gel coat until it\'s semi hard, lay matting (2/3 layer) ,spead the reisn until it\'s hard and leave it to dry/hard and release the mould.
Polish the mould with wax and do the same again as making the mould. done it before in the mid 90\'s  and still got mould for lower front lip/splitter spoiler for FC.
Look good and cool about the splitter but the bunnies!!

Bunnies? did\'nt you take them out before you made the Mold??

Quote from: antnicukwhy would anyone want to remove the scoop?   i have a front mount but still want a scoop

Wouldn\'t it mess up the airflow around the engine bay if you have the scoop in place and no TMIC?
Title: Ally bonnets
Post by: antnicuk on February 05, 2007, 10:11:07 AM
i would have thought the air forced into the scoop would help push the air in the bay out through the bottom of the car,  just a guess though
Title: Ally bonnets
Post by: grinder on February 05, 2007, 10:43:05 AM
i suppose it would be a really arkward thing to prove it it helps or not ??
Title: Ally bonnets
Post by: sadgoth on February 05, 2007, 12:07:19 PM
there was something a while back about the need to get the airflow right in the bay to ensure the rear rotor housing gets some cooling air around it also. again, hard to actually quantify without a lot of test to destruction type work.

Post by: elford_tim on February 05, 2007, 12:13:53 PM
Hmm. And if we\'re talking FG bonnets, maybe a reverse scoop would help with the hot air extraction? Might mess up the airflow through the bay a little, though!

There was a picture posted on here recently, albeit for an FD, where someone had got ducting from the front of the car and pointed under the plenum!

I remember the thread about the cooling.  They where saying that lifted bonnets actually increase the temps (on fd\'s at least)  That the heat shield attached to the underside of the bonnet helps too and that the air is channeled to go out through the transmission tunnel and underneath the car.

I would have hoped that leaving the bonnet intake in place it would help the cooling and not disrupt the airflow underneath the bonnet?

Remove the rubber strip at the rear of the top of firewall ,it will leave a gap between bonnet/firewall and will stuck hot air out of the engine bay and over the wind screen like a vent without putting a vent on the bonnet.
