Title: Couple of newbie Questions
Post by: Tim_B on January 29, 2007, 06:59:44 PM
I\'ve looked at a couple for sale now and noticed both had pretty crap brakes.  Are the stock brakes a bit rubbish? and does it vary with the different models?  Also are there easy upgrades, e.g. good discs and ceramic pads or would you want new calipers?

Loads of the cars for sale have decat, either with extensive breathing mods or without.  What does this do to boost levels if no mapping has been done?
From what I\'ve read I think stock boost is 0.7 bar and a \'safe\' level is about 0.9 - 1.0, is this right?  I\'ve also read (from this forum) just a decat can add as much as 30bhp :2eek  - is this true?  I guess that would be down to higher boost :2Confused

Oh yeah, its 3rd gen RX7 I\'m looking for.  If anyone can help would be much appreciated :D

Hi

Can\'t help much with your second point but I\'ve been told that for a long while the FD was one of the quickest \'stopping\' cars around.

Cheers for the reply.  Perhaps different models with different brake specs??

Maybe it had good brakes for \'93 - I dunno...

What price range have you been looking at?
The brakes on these cars are pretty awesome actually so could be down to specific issues with the couple you have looked at.
As far as the Decat is concerned then yes you are right really it should be mapped soon after the decat has been put in to prevent boost spike or even detonation.
Talk nicely to a local member and see if they will take you out in their car. At least then you will have a benchmark.
Cheers

Ditto, as above - the FD brakes are very good in stock form. With some good discs and pads - they shouldnt disappoint on you on track.

Tim_B, I\'m in the Manchester area so if you want to have a look at a variety then drop me a line.

Stock FD brakes are so good that you will often find many tuners of other make cars actually using them as an aftermarket mod!!!

:cool

Must just be the brakes on the cars I tried then, great that means more cash for more power :Giggle  Well actually I\'m looking for a car close to stock but I always get tempted to modify...
