what is the heat light on the dash about. the only time i have ever seen it was when my engine chipped a tooth, while on full boost.
last night threes up was going up a bypass, at fairly full chat in 4th, went to go change into 5th and there was a really odd noice, power dropped and the light flicker like mad. came back into 4th and backed off absolutely, fine.
went back into 5th, absolutley fine. at top of bypass kept redlineing. not a problem at all. so it only did it this one time. no problem with it now at all, as if it had never happened.
so what was it?
Has your car got a PFC? Believe the PFC uses the heat light to warn of knock/detonation.
t\'is true that is precisely what it does
bearing in mind the knock sensor is basically a microphone in the exhaust
Pretty sure the knock sensor is bolted to the front rotor housing just above the plugs. What sort of knock readings are you getting? (assuming you\'ve got a PFC!) It\'s also not unknown for the knock sensor to pick up other vibrations/noises not associated with detonation.

I thought that was to check if you were running lean etc :O
Quote from: JoehI thought that was to check if you were running lean etc :O
yes it is
If you run lean and get detonation, it will "pink" and make a noise thus picked up by the microphone..
The power FC will give you 3 quick flashes of the heat light when it picks up a high knock reading as this could be due to det. It will also flash just once if you max out the injectors!
the injector duty will bring it on to if it goes over a certain%
yer of cause, should have said. i have power fc, t70 single tubby. big v mount intercooler, largish street port, ported intake, bosch 044 etc
it def flashed more than once. and the noice i heard was prob detenation thinking about it. why would it be doing this.
i very much doubt i would have maxed out injectors, as i have never got anywhere near. i am running stock primarys, and 1600 secondarys i believe.
any ideas why?
what type of noise was it?
hard to explain, but now some one mentioned it, it was prob det. but i dont know why? the rest of the night i was drifting around, at v.high revs and nothing
if it was det, it must have been mild.... what kind of damage would mild det do to an engine? e.g. would it reduce compression or something else ?
i am not sure, as talking to a mate and he said put it in 5th at about 30mph and if it is det\'ing (will make a pinging sound) you will here it, it is is then back off straight away and call pip.
tried this but my car is blowing from the manifold or there abouts and all i can here is that. hmmmmmmmm..........i dont get this.
always wanted to know what happens when the engine pings, apart from the noise does the car hesitate/jerk sharply, etc?
it just lost a little power, sort of dipped a bit. and the heat light went mental.. all very quik, but a bit of a suprise. especially at speed
I\'ve only ever experienced it on a piston engine, but apart from the sharp metallic rattle coming from the engine there wasn\'t much to tell you it was going on. Always used to happen under heavy load, say in top gear, low revs climbing a hill for example (probably due to the fact I was using spazzy unleaded in an engine with an 11:1 compression ratio!) I\'ve always been lead to believe that it\'ll only take a few good shap pings to goose a rotary, usually by cracking the nearest apex seal.
Did you manage to catch the knock levels on the commander when it happened? What sort of readings are you seeing now?

what does that pinging noise mean? I get a funny noise when backing off at low speeds around town etc which could be described as pinging. Done it since I have had the car so I just thought it was somthing to do with the exhaust on a rotary...
didnt look at the comander as it was on the floor. dont often look at it as i have all the my important gauges infront of me, oil temp, oil pres, fuel pres, water temp. intake would have been low as i had been on the move for quite a while, and my intercooler stays cool :cool.
am suppose to be speaking to pip in the next couple of days, so will talk to him. se what he thinks. my exhaust is blowing a little, perhaps, as some one said above the sensor, picked up on that vibration........i dunno.
Slightly off topic maybe but just wanted to mention it!
My knock light flashed once a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was knock. (but I just read that it was the injectors MAXED out which now makes sense! ) Didnt do it again, so wasnt really bothered about it, although the knock readin have been a little higher than it used to be but nothing dangerous, so carried on driving it normally. Anyway Saturday night when the bf was driving it, he stuck his foot down and the car took off like its never taken off before and then tried stalling etc. so he backed off truned the boost off and drove home very slowly.. Anyway after some investigating. it turns out that the BOOST box has been knocked ( its under the steering wheel) and some how been switched from LO boost to HIGH boost.. which the car hasnt been set up for.. DOH! anyway switched it back and doing a full service on it asap to be safe and nothing has been be damanaged and all seems fine now when driving it, so I was lucky! :Laugh. will be keeping an eye on that boost box from now on..

Even if you don\'t look at the commander on the move, it would have held the highest value for you to look at. When I had the light come on, my commander showed that the knock had reached 94, and also that the intake temperature was in the 70\'s due to heatsoak. Therefore, probably detonation - a lesson I\'ve learnt now!
Always worth looking at it straight afterwards for that reason.

how do you get to the highest recorded, for a session then? i know nothing about the comander really.
Press the up arrow and it will show peak readings.
