Title: What spec battery and cable
Post by: allstaruk on January 27, 2007, 10:49:53 PM
Hi ya guys,

I am going to be fitting new intercooler soon and I suspect that I won\'t be able to put the standard battery back in as the pipes will prob get in the way so what I was thinking is putt the batter into one of the storage bins in the the car, now oviously it would have to be a sealed battery I was just wondering what spec/power etc it would have to be, could I get away with a bike battery, also what spec cable should I use and were is good to get all thsi stuff from?

If you put the battery in the cabin I would go for a gel type, redtop seem to be the most popular go for the 40amp and you should be ok cant remember the cable size but does 12mm sound right? oh and you only need to run the positive into the enginebay you can of course use the chasis for earth

Redtop are good apparently was just trying to think of a way of doing this and keeping the cost down.

12mm cabble does sound about right does anyone know a good stockist?

There was a thread started yesterday about using a gel battery from a Halfrauds car starter pack - maybe you could use this?

I was thinking about that but that is a bike battery and I\'m not sure it would be up the sustained job I think I\'d really need a red top battery.

I just need to know what the minimum spec battery I need is.

I thought most bike batteries were 6v?

But it depends how you use your car, if you use it every day then the Amp Hours rating isn\'t too important (basically how much charge can it hold, i.e. 17ah means it can deliver 1 amp for 17 hours, which isn\'t much).

But it was one of these that one of the guys in the race series was useing, mounted the whole pack in the passenger foot well and wired it all up. It would run a 1600cc MR2 all day long. As once it\'s started the battery is just something to level the voltage after the altenator. Really, if you wired it up, you could use a jump pack and run the car off the altenator ;)

So the more expensive red tops have better CCA (cold cranking amps) and better amp hours of charge. But I\'ve been trying to find what CCA we would need for a RX... The ah isn\'t too important if you can just keep it on a trickle charger ;)

I have an Optima Red Top and will be relocating it to one of the rear bins at some point :) There\'s a couple of good relocation threads over on rx7club

12mm cable sounds way to small buddy, you need anything from 0awg to 2 awg cabling for battery + and also dont forget a breaker!
