Two words, excess fuel. Happens to me having decatted with power FC (pops annoyingly too, but air pump soon to be removed).
I am told fairly common.
The local Powerflow center 2 days ago had a guy in putting a flamer kit in his Audi (involves a spark plug in the exhaust pipe to burn excess fuel) & drilled 2 small holes near outlet to add oxygen. Must say it is a bit of a chav boy racer thing around here (fiestas, corsas etc).
American muscle V8 supercharged do this well too (even seen an old  Kawasaki custom bike supercharged do this madly.....rode by a guy with one arm).
Aparently there is no law against it (re tuning - lambos & Ferraris flame), but expect lots of grief from police if you install a flamer kit.

Looks tons better on a Rex though (keep the switch hidden away, lol).
I have noticed after my tune that in traffic jams people tend to be very polite behind you....staying back aways & even allowing others in front of them, he he.

You can set the map up to produce flames eazy. Just dump loads of extra fuel in.

Just gotta remember that the turbo needs to be plenty warm enough to produce the change to flame.

Flamer kit... how XR2

Don\'t forget to drill some holes in your exhaust to improve it\'s "note"...

Hi mate, just run really rich and you will shoot flames without needing any flamer kit!

lean fuel mix usually causes flames ... why? because the fuel mix is too lean to be ignited in the chamber so is not ignited by the plugs, when the mixture in the exhaust is rich enough with unburnt fuel you will get flames as somthing will be hot enough to ignite it in the exhaust ... hence why it usually occurs on the over run or deceleration etc.

rich fuel mix = black smoke and excess carbon from poor/incomplete combustion

Or that\'s how I understand it.

as far as i can see you could just add a few numbers in a few boxes on your map so that more fuel is dumped when there is no load ie when letting off the pedal, that way you floor it let go and git big wavy flames.

as far as i can see real ones are like gunshots not big wavy ones but still should be easy :)

If I have been informed correctly all you need to do is change the fuel cut settings to 8000 then everytime you snap the throttle shut you\'ll get flames ( not turbo permitting )

Was thinking of doing it for a laugh but I\'m a little unsure of the effects on turbo life so haven\'t tryed yet

Alternatively thrash around til it gets really hot in the engine bay, then your map sensor will slip off the pipe on it\'s own, the engine has no idea of the air intake so dumps loads of fuel, so you end up with 16 foot flames out the back of your rex - well at least that\'s what happened to me as I cruised down the straight at the Ring two years ago. Thank heavens I\'d finished the lap !!!!!

more thoughts please.....

how - big flames - not loads more fuel comsumption i mean bl00dy hell how much money we got - no harming the car just something nice to look at say on decelaration etc.

what i dont understand is some cars do it and others not so much.

i have seen very powerfull cars do it less than some ordinary evos and supras.

i would like to know the difference in setup.

i c, mine pops and bangs much louder when its hot, like a gunshot when i\'ve been flooring it for a while.

people have spotted flashes and quick flames out the back of mine as it seems to have a sweet spot at 1500rpm where it always pops but then i did the london traffic run the other week and although it would roar (3rd loudest car there im sure only beaten by Warthog and James willday!) and then bang some people said there was no flames? was this because the air temps were reallllly high?

btw mine has twin blitz intake, twins, complete straight thru exhaust with no restrictions and a Nurspec R with apexi base map, forcing it to run 0.70 bar boost too

lol we are all sleepy heads :)

You sure you don\'t have any type of restricted cat somewhere? When the car is hotter, I think less fuel is wasted because combustion is easier... right?

yep i less fuel is used as air is less dense so not as much needed. i think thats why as when the air is cool it bangs away soo much!! :)  Love it :evillaugh

so who has a camcorder and wouldnt mind following...?
