Hi
Have you killed the casing as well as the diff, you mentioned a hole??
I ran a Kaaz 1.5 which is a great bit of kit,a bit noisey but far stronger and more able of putting the power down than the standard.
Check out the vendors on this site, i got mine from Gary at Rotary Art also try Ross at Dragon if you can get hold of him:)  Or RE:Worx might be able to help. Were two Kaaz diffs floating around in the general items for sale section a while ago as well.

Kazz diffs can be found here in 1.5 or 2 way

Unless you intend doing a hell of a lot of Drifting mate then only look at the 1 1/2 way locker.

Well i can see a cog from underneath if i look from behind so i can see inside the diff yeah :) kept the pieces of metal that exploded to :)

Kaaz 1.5 seems to be getting alot of votes, deffo decided on a 1.5way then. what about cusco?

Ok so you need a casing as well as a diff! Try the all vendors, auto salvage and look in the \'general items for sale section\'.You might have to buy a second hand complete standard diff with casing then take the guts out and replace with the Kaaz. Your looking at £500 ish for the Kaaz or similar and £100 ish for a standard casing/diff.
Make sure whoever fits it checks to make sure the crown wheel and pinion are in good condition and not swaffed.
Can\'t comment on a cusco, couple of members have got them fitted though.

I think cucso and kaaz diffs are the same.

I had a 2 way in my last car, never driven with a 1.5, 2 way was great fun :god  so much controlled oversteer but also tons of grip if you wanted, it seemed to pull you through the corners when hard on the gas.

pete sparrow - bollox ! lol cheers for the help mate, i didnt realise i had to buy a new casing, i thought it came with it :Hammer

even more money out lol, oh well it happens, ok ill look for a second hand diff casing then cheers for your advice dude :)

thanks for the recommendations guys!

Kieron - I was told a 2 way was a little too dangerous for on the road? thats why i was steering clear of it... its not as if i use the rx7 as the daily driver tho hmm lol.

HAHAHA who told you that sh1t? probably the same person who said an RX7 is unreliable and a death trap :rollin

I used mine as a daily driver, about 300 miles a week!

It\'s so much fun crusing in 4th then clutch down, 2nd gear and lift the clitch up sharp, the diff will lock and SIDEWAYS you go :driving  Cant wait to get a 2way on the new car.

If you buy a used diff it might not have had a good life and would probably need a rebuild soon so you\'ll have to take it out the casing anyway. Just buy new and put it in your casing (unless thats pretty fduked)

a couple of pplz told me a 2 way is pretty hairy to use on the roads etc,

coz thats all my car will be on, doubt ill track it, probably a couple of strips tho.

But i do enjoy going sideways... :driving  lol

well i have a big hole in my diff casing so i need a new one damn :(

If your not used to alot of oversteer/want more oversteer go with the 1.5 way. Personally I love the fact an FD steps out, its what makes it such an exciting drive!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate! :Giggle
Remember to check the crown wheel n pinion are ok in the second hand diff!
To replace those your talking £750 from Mazda!!!:2eek Don\'t buy a damaged/blown diff,it might of spat metal into the crown n pinion!!
Whoever you get to fit the new diff into the casing wants to set the pre load between 1.3 & 1.8Nm
The backlash sets between 0.09 & 0.11mm.
Hope this helps.

Cheers for that initial D - ill go with the 1.5way to be safe then :)

Pete Sparrow, cheers for all that info mate! thats really appreciated! ill pass all of that to the guy thats fitting it :)

You talk about the crown wheel & pinion... would i have to worry about this if im buying a brand new kaaz diff? im just gonna try & buy the casing and not the diff second hand... and stick the kaaz diff in that im guessing....

The crown wheel n pinion are attached to the inside of the diff casing itself, they link the diff to the prop shaft. They are an integeral part of the diff casing.
If buying a second hand empty(without diff) casing ask if the crown wheel n pinion are still attached and in good condition. If in poor condition they could vibrate and cause damage or break your new diff.
When you buy a new Kaaz diff, all you get is the diff itself, instructions and running in diff oil, but no casing or shims etc etc!!!!!
Try the vendors Re Worx,Dragon etc etc,one of them might have a casing for sale.

1.benefits of 1.5 or 2 way lsd\'s
2.do i need one
3.i use mine on the road and track that is for info as to how i use my car.

If your uses are road n track then a 2 way is not for you.
If your running standard-ish power and like the way the car handles and your happy then stick with what you\'ve got.
If your running more power then maybe go for a 1.5 as its alot stronger than the original.
A lsd locks and will apply the power through both wheels equally, which means better traction basically. Read Kierons post up the page he obviously likes to drift with his!!:rollin

thanks for that pete when i\'m back from oz the power will be higher around 400+atw so should be ok\'ish with the stock diff and yes so far very happy the way the car handles apart from suspension ands anti roll bar but they have now been changed, someone said if i am doing alot of 1/4 mile runs then maybe uprate it cos the stock diff wont be very good off the line so that is only something i do rarely.

I blew standard diff with 380 atw,you seriously might want to think about upgrading before it goes pop!! True if your dragging the car your putting alot more strain on the diff, but you never know.
Enjoy Aus mate:)

Its not just about power.  A car on a decent diff will be a lot more progressive and give more feedback than the stock diff.  The stock FD diff isnt too bad though really.

I find the stock diff ok. Gets thrashed in all weathers and its got grip in most conditions and will slide/ drift about fine when you want. I enjoy playing with the grip/no grip balance but I dont launch it like a drag car much so maybe it will last a while.
Problem is threads like this start making you think about what it would be like if..............

Hmmmmm......how much extra noise is there from a 1.5 diff?

Thanks clive! thats an interesting read and cleared up a few things :Thumbs-up

lol 400atw? i blew mine up with 275atw!

cheers for all that pete- thats really helpful :D

My mate had a look at my car last night and he thinks his metal fabricator geezer could actually weld up the whole in my diff casing and strengthen it, i might just do that? but obviously get the crown and pinion checked out coz i dont want my new diff going.

if it aint possible then im sure one of the venders will check over the crown wheel & pinion and make sure they are all ok for me :)

Hi Mark
Another way of strengthening the diff is to get a s/s diff brace from Dragon Performance.Basically it bolts to the outside of the casing and also to the chassis, making your diff rigid and stops the car from bogging down. Good bit of kit, well priced to..
Any specialised gearbox/diff engineers or garage/mechanics can check your crown n pinion are running smooth, local to yourself.

well i take my car to my mate martin, who works for dave if you know him? think his online name is sicknote.... owns an MOT station by me :) he always sorts my rex out when shes sick :)

ive been looking at those braces dude and im definetly going to buying one! they look like a good purchase! and im also looking at buying the gearbox brace to!

Now just gotta look for diff cases from breakers, coz if they aint to much then ill just  get one of them instead of welding mine up :)

cusco 1.5way it looks like!

fingers crossed the crown wheel & pinion is all ok, but to be honest they are bloody strong so they should be....

Looks similar but hard to tell. Was that in the rx7 parts list or on their general web site? Have you spoken to them? Why don\'t you speak to Gary at Rotary Art about a Kaaz? Better to buy off a known MRC vendor surely?
Title: LSD\'s....
Post by: markrx7 on February 02, 2007, 12:55:51 PM
well i have purchased off them before and they have come thru and are a really helpful company :)

plus its £100 cheaper than the kaaz at rotary art, and to be honest thats money ive gotta save!

Right well upon closer inspection (and pictures will follow!) the thing thats hanging out of the side of the diff isnt what i thought it was, my mechanic came round and had a look and its actually the pinion lol! :eek

When i do things, i do em properly! :D

So i guess i need to buy a full replacement diff now and use the pinion and crown wheel out of that and stick my new lsd in there?

That is not an easy job!! A normal mechanic or garage will have the kit to push the pinion out and in again. Then they\'ve got to set it back to the right postion with the use of shims. If the orginals aren\'t worn they can be re used, but if badly worn they need to be replaced.
I used Graham Quick at Kivernoll Engineering. He builds rally cars for a living very successfully, and knows everything there is to know about diff building! Give him a call on Tel 01981 541285

pete, i dont have to take the ring & pinion out tho do i? Im buying a whole replacement diff bit in casing etc as my current pinion is hanging out the side of my diff casing. all im doing is taking the diff out of it and putting the cusco one in it ?

No worries mate,i\'m happy to help. Two braces for £120 from rx motors or one Dragon s/s diff brace for £100? The choice is yours.I can recommend the Dragon brace because i have one and it saved my casing from exploding.Can\'t comment on the rx motor braces because i havn\'t seen them.

The diff is bolted by 6 points.Four on the power plant bar, that runs from the gearbox to the diff,i don\'t see who you could uprate them. The other two are on a top yoke with rubber bushes, not really sure how you could uprate them either.Ask how their mounts strengthen the diff casing itself?? That\'s what you want and thats what the Dragon brace does!! Plus it stop diff judder on the launch!!

ill ring dragon 2mora and order my diff brace :) getting the mrs to drive to salisbury 2mora to pick up my diff casing :D and just gotta order the cusco 2mora to :D hopefully be back on the road for next sunday!!! gotta get her all ready for santa pod on the 25th !

Yes they\'re are a friendly, knowledgeble lot at Dragon. Ask Ross if he\'s still got the Mazdaspeed 1.5 diff! Why did he recommend the 2 way? Are you getting the diff brace?
Title: LSD\'s....
Post by: markrx7 on February 09, 2007, 04:44:40 PM
yeah they still have the mazdaspeed one....

he just said the stigma following a 2 way being dangerous on the roads is over exaggerated and bull basically and he recommended i went for that one as the ATS lsd is the best one he has. plus it comes all ready to go with it fitted in the casing etc. (which now makes the diff casing ive bought from RX motors useless)
He said it takes a bit of getting used to, but once you are they are a better piece of kit even tho my car is a street car. any thoughts on this?

I will be getting a diff brace yeah, but someone on here has a KG parts one or somet for sale i might be buying or i might buy the one from dragon, depends how much this guy asks for the second hand one.

Can\'t help about the 2 way for your application,i know nothing about them! If you\'ve been recommended it i\'m sure it\'ll be ok.
Prepare yourself for it being noisey and it\'ll crash and bang at low speeds when its locking and unlocking.
Ask Ross about oil change intervals and stick to them!
Speak to Guy at OPIE OILS for future diff oil purchases.

cheers for pete, ive heard about the knocks/bangs and that doesnt bother me tbh...

antnicuk - read it, doesnt sound all that bad! really need to feel what ur on about when it comes to it trying to kick out at slow speeds.... coz i honestly dont drive my fd hard all the time, just when im on my own, when ive got the gf in the car i drive very sensibly, so i need to feel yours..... where abouts are you situated? only prob is dude i appreciate the offer but im going to pick up a diff on tuesday from dragon and Ive only got till then to decide whether i want 1.5way or 2way.
Title: LSD\'s....
Post by: antnicuk on February 12, 2007, 09:39:47 AM
i would definately go for a 1.5 but thats just my opinion.  The diff i have is only good when you drive hard.  The rest of the time its like having a really savage clutch and makes you look like you cant drive.  When driving slowly around bends the car judders and the inside wheel slips which makes the car twitch.

TBO if you have fairly stock power and use it mainly on the road i would stay with a stock diff they are very good. Just make sure you have good rubber bushes or poly ones to stop the flex which can cause it to break, also make sure you power plant isnt broken.  (the black bar between the gearbox and diff)

We ran our FD Tripple with a stock diff running 440 rwhp on the strip yesterday and it had no problems at all (of course that doesnt mean it wont break when we up the boost).   Personally i think you only need a better diff if you are going to run sticky slick tyres and do hard launches. Not many people seem to break their diff on the circuit, only the drag strip.

These are just my opinions based on having both.  Your girlfriend wont like it!
Title: LSD\'s....
Post by: markrx7 on February 12, 2007, 02:07:01 PM
cheers for all that dude :)

i busted my stock diff pulling off a set of traffic lights... couldve been a number of reasons but i thought if im gonna spend £250 on a stock diff... then i might as well pay the extra £200 and get a LSD...

i like drifting and messing around, thats my problem, and ive been told an LSD is the best way of acheiving it, and i was offered a ATS lsd for a good price so ive gone for that... it is a 2 way but ill give it a try.. if worst comes to worst and i dont like it then i can always sell it on and buy a 1.5 way, but i thought id go extreme for now as i do have a daily driver as well, the fd is the fun car.... its just not driven hard in this weather, that is what i shouldve said, the wet is a tad dangerous.

Im not running serious power, got 330 at the fly atm and im planning on taking it to the 350 at the wheels and that will be it....

cheers for the advice mate, its given me a good perspective from both sides :)

the girlfriend wont care luckily mate, shes one of those thrill seeker types who would be quite happy to sit in a stripped out fd with a cage and be thrown round the track for a laugh!

it wont luck unless you start putting more power through it, thats what makes it good on the road.  It could have been worn out, lose worn bushes and old oil, all of which could contribute to killing it.  People often neglect putting oil in it.

Just out of interest Tony, what diff will you use

I\'ll start with the standard diff and see how it goes. To be honest, I\'ve raced with open and locking diffs and you just deal with whatever characteristcs they present. I\'m more likely to swap the diff becuase of the need for a shorter final drive than because of problems with the way the locking works.

Not sure what you mean by spinning on the ramp and not indicating it was an LSD? Unless you mean that you had a single wheel spining as the ramp was wet/slippy - that is normal for an LSD unless it has a very agresive locking action. A wheel has to spin to a certain degree to cause the diff to lock. You will usually find that you feel one wheel spinnig up, then as you keep the power going the wheelspin will cause the diff to lock. The diff isn\'t welded together so that both wheels turn all the time.
