Post by: TonyC on January 25, 2007, 03:00:29 PM
Hi all, any recommendations from people in regard to installing an intake temperature gauge/monitor.  senders (and position of)/fitments/gauges, etc.

Cheers all,

Tony

Power FC Commander that you should get with a Power FC ECU. Not sure where it reads it from but it works well and easy to read

ask yourself are you really going to have time to look at it when racing? It isn\'t really a warning gauge so isn\'t going to be of use anyway.

fit one for tuning/testing the car and then take it out and stick it in the tool box for next time. Weight saving :-)

the stock FD sensor is under the UIM (its the blue one)  if you use a commander or have it mapped then thats all you really need, once you know your set up works well its not the sort of thing thats likely to fail unless you use a charge cooler.

SPA do them

Fit it in the top of the plenum

Chat to Tony direct at SPA....Im sure he will help you.

I think it is necessary.....I use mine, very useful to see....especially as if the inlet temps are starting to rise  good time to back off and possibly shut off before damage is done!

i bought on of these

http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=45&products_id=65

and one of these

http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=348

stuck them together - stuck it on the car battery and it showed the air temp outside

my plan it to extend the probe and place it in my air filter

this should give me an intake temp - or you can place it anywhere you want

hope this helps

you could run 2 if you wanted ( not on the westie mind you )

you could run 1 in each end of the IC\'s to see the temp drop ??

i saw these on ebay for £25 ( add delivery ) and there are the SAME things just with the probe already extended

in fact i emailed the company to ask if they would work in a car and he "suggested" that there is a company that he sells to that sells them on ebay

to be honest i was gonna build a few and flog them on here for about £20 - but its just as easy to tell people where to buy them from :D

you can read it from about 9 foot away aswell - i have a pic on the phone somewhere :D

I did think about the before and after intercooler thingy but the sensors only go up to 70degrees so would have to get a sensor which reads a higher peak reading.

It was something I wanted to do but never got round to it! (how many jobs like that do you have at any one time! :King :yes )  I got so far as to comparing to the temperature sensors they use on Aircraft and then decided I have gone too far! :2Confused :chat

Anyway, its less than a tenner for the 2 products delivered!  As for reading it 10foot away BONUS, im getting old so the bigger and brighter the better! :Laugh

Top link there Mr Grinder! :Thumbs-up

does intake get more than 70 degrees ???

Chees, the initial reason is for settign up. IE: is the FMIC/bumper setup allow enough air to eep things cool - do I need to let in further ducting/holes. It couldbe useful in races in terms of checking th car is ok - You always need to glance at gauges on the straight to ensure things are not gettign out of hand and if you look at that each lap of a race and see temps climbing then it can be an early warning of probs. Like wise if you have a bit of a nudge on the front you never quite know of he opening has bene blocked and rising temps (or not) are good to know whether to press on or pull in before more damage occurs.
I found the sender in the UIM, in theory I can run a gauge of that. Ot just check a PFC - although its a big old monster of a device!

I was on the assumption that before intercooler you can see higher than that!  Tested this was on a 200sx but dont see it being too different, could be wrong though?  I was just worried about burning the probe out?

Anyone have any readings before intercooler?

Edit - Didn\'t the Purple FB (RX Motors?) run without intercooler and see over 120 degreese?
